  • Ellen Coyne and Carl Kinsella join Dion Fanning on #StateOfUs for day two of the #GeneralElection2020 count where the future of Irish politics is being discussed. The panel analyse why and how the #votelefttransferleft movement has changed the landscape of politics in Ireland as Fianna Fail and Fine Gael lost serious ground to Sinn Fein and Mary Lou McDonald.

    The Wolfe Tones' 'Come Out Ye Black and Tans' reaching number 1 on the Ireland and UK iTunes charts in January is a major clue to what's going on here. What people say - and not just outwardly, but what they say to themselves - is largely narrative-making, based on the 'available talking points' in the media and wider body politic. Deeper than that is nationalism, which is coming up/back in a big way. Prolly every other person thought 'Up the RA!' the night the exit poll came out, even those who didn't vote SF. This resurgence of nationalism is a global phenomenon these days, and the Irish are also being affected by it, whether or not they yet viscerally realize it. As for SF being a 'left' party, they're doubly well-positioned because they're both a nationalist AND a socialist party. True nationalism best encompasses the social.

    it shouldnt be left or right politics. it should be right and wrong policies.

    • @gypsyspears
      @gypsyspears 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well that's very dependent on the economy. In times of plenty a government should be socialist, in times of struggle it should be market oriented.
      The problem is political parties are about ideologies, and often vested interests/funders and that straight jackets parties into certain sets of policies irrespective of economic outlook.

    • @conorcorcoran1803
      @conorcorcoran1803 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      there should be no politics behind the policies. thats why nothing happens. too busy playing politics instead of tackling the issues at hand. thats why we need a new approach and new thinking. fear of change leads us to repeating the same thing over and over again. as we all know doing the same thing overe and over and expecting different results. dosent take a genius to give us the results of that policy.

      left policies are those who benefit the working people not the corporations. So that makes them correct policies to implement if we want to improve the lives of ordinary people.
