Mainer here! Born, raised and have always lived here. This is a great video! So glad to see it. So much has changed on the industrial side. Most of the mills at the beginning of the video are either vacant or repurposed. The chicken farming is scarce if not non existent now. Morse High School in Bath (home to the naval shipyard) are the Shipbuilders for their mascot. I grew up in Winslow. The paper mill closed years ago. Sits mostly vacant. It’s an eyesore now which makes me sad. It was once a bustling workplace for much of the community. Fun facts: Maine has the longest coastline of any state in the US and Portland Headlight is the most photographed lighthouse in the world!

I grew up in and around Portland... we used to go up to see my mom's side of the family once a year or so, and The County felt like a different world. It was like going back in time.
I met my husband in maine, I took a bus from MA to Monmouth, i fell in love with it at first sight, i felt at home. For the last 6 years we've basically lived all over the state, and I absolutely would never live in any other state
my mom and dad are from Maine as well I can tell you know your Mainers it's true basically almost all Mainers to stay in Maine the only thing that changed about my family is that they had to go to college they might have to go somewhere else for jobs but they all come back eventually have a great weekend whoever you are see you cheers.

I am 45 and Maine has changed A LOT since I was born. Topsham alone has went from mostly woods and a few neighborhoods. To start looking like Brunswick. I don’t like it on one hand but, I do benefit from not having to drive more than 15-20 mins to get things.
The Bath ship yards? You'd have a hard time making a case that government has destroyed that. As far as the loss of jobs overall, the single greatest reason is corporate merger mania. That's because of the failure to use the Anti-Trust law. So, really, it was less government that killed traditional jobs.
I was born in caribou maine and worked for Irving farms growing potatoes for 20 years I now live in New Bedford Massachusetts and I miss the Aroostook county with all my heart but there's no jobs up there anymore but it is peaceful and full of good hard working people
Watching this video after just returning from a vacation at Acadia National Park. Certainly enjoyed the trip but Bar Harbor definitely doesn’t look like that anymore - regrettably! Beautiful country but the town is a tourist destination for the upper class now - $14 draft beers and anything with lobster can’t hardly be touched for less then $30, more often $40 a plate.
I'm not upper class and do 2-3 nights trip to Bar Harbor every year , prices comparable to the rest of Maine . by the way I live in Windham , Maine and a trip to Acadia is not expensive at all .Going there to celebrate July 4 th this year .
@@mbuczyk Being from PA I certainly can't speak to the rest of Maine - perhaps what it may be is the general economic conditions taking a bite. When I was in Bar Harbor last week I was in a shop getting some chocolate and overheard a conversation between the owner and another man who I think was a full time resident as well -- the owner was saying how much the prices at various places had gone up and how a bunch of restaurants really cut back on their offerings and also she mentioned she doesn't know how folks will pay what places were asking. The gentleman's response is what I remember most, "if they're here they'll pay". It's true -- I paid because I was there. Bar Harbor and Acadia are beautiful and worth the price I believe - still expensive. Enjoy your time there! July's weather should be better then what I had (at least it was Sunny!)

My father frequently docked in Maine during World War II. He decided to stay after the war, and marry a professor who had taught him at the Univ. of Maine. The marriage didn't last, so he was a Mainer only for a couple of years.
East Millinocket also was home to the largest paper machine in the world. Supplied the NY Times and phone books. Millinocket printed the heavy National Geographic magazine paper.
The Maine I grew up in long before the Massholes destroyed it. The left has destroyed all of the beautiful places in this country. The Allagash used to have beaver skulls left by the native Maine Indians on trees that all disappeared after the left supposedly saved it. Maine people loved the Allagash and cared for it but after the article in national geographic came out usage skyrocketed and the beaver skulls disappeared. You couldn't find a campsite anymore and if you did it was destroyed with trash. Take a good look at the good old days folks because Maine is gone.
Lobsters are probably most overrated thing about Maine. They are great and big industry but often overshadow the equally important logging, potato, and blueberry industries.
Most of them actually are processes and not sold as whole potatoes. McCain's and McDonald's both process large numbers of Maine potatoes into French fries.
Burbank's are what McDonald's uses to make there fry's and McCain's is a huge part of Maine's potato income I worked on a potato farm for 20 years and 25% of the crop every year goes to make McDonald's Fry's

When in the Coast Guard and stationed on Seguin Island Lighthouse, one aspect of Maine remains with me: the inhospitable disrespect of those not from Maine. Every 5 weeks I went back to Detroit for R & R. Each time I returned was dreaded because anyone from a cabby to bus driver to a store owner treated like I was an enemy. Maybe it was the uniform, maybe it was my Midwest accent.

What led to the decline of the potato industry was the rise in popularity of French fries. The types grown in Maine aren't really suitable for fries.
