I was always a Honda guy. Well I just bought a brand new 570. Let me tell ya. I won’t be going back. Absolutely love this machine. Thing has almost 50 horse. She scoots. Low end torque is unbelievable as well
i got one too! and a 1996. crazy how much different they both are
I have the exact wheeler. I love it. In rear wheel drive it rips and drifts easy. In 4 wheel it's unstoppable.
I have a 1999 335 Sportsman that I bought new. Bought the 05 700 used and it only had 400 miles on it. Like them both. Never really had and problem with them.
The Arctic cat 500 is a great machine too, the have a hell of a lot of power
I like the reviews man, keep them up!
Great video...
I like the old Sportsmans...
This 500 model was the 1st ATV on the market with True 4 wheel independent suspension and put Polaris in the lead and became 1 of the best selling quads ever I heard.
Yamaha actually had the grizzly 600 in 96 or 97 I remember because I got a dirt wheels magazine with the shootout between it and the Sportsman 500..
I got a 2000 Sportsman 500 I got at a insurance auction.
It sat for years out in the weather and had a gummed up carburetor and the speedometer trip meter doesn't work I don't think after showing 5000 miles or so but the engine and drivetrain all work great after I got it going and had lots of fun with it...
@Karl Weiss I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Yes this sportsman was ahead of its time back then, I still think this 26 year old machine rides smoother than some of the new wheelers.
I bet you did have a blast on that thing! It’s always rewarding fixing them up and enjoying them afterwards.

Thankyou for the comment...
Yea it fun fixing up those old Polaris quads and i like the old Sportsman chassis and looks.
I just wish mine was nice olive green.
You know that those old Sportsmans shift into gear better then my 2013 scrambler 850?
I got to rock that thing into gear at times or shut of the engine off to shift it...
I am not impressed with that newer Scrambler shifting...
It's a great quad otherwise that rides great and powerful...
Hey would you know on my 2000 Sportsman 500 where I start looking if its not charging the battery?
Its stopped changing a few years ago and I haven't ridden it in months.
@@karlw426 Yeah I hear ya, I had a sportsman 850 and the shifter was very stiff. You pretty much had to slap the shifter into gear every time. I have a Polaris diesel 455 that stopped charging and all it was was the voltage regulator. You need to remove the front rack and the front panel to be able to get to it. It’s a small square box with 4 wires coming out of it. If that’s not the problem it could be your stator..
@@rockspowersports sorry for the late reply...
Yeah I thought other Polaris big bores had trouble shifting to..
This confirms it.
The scrambler 850 is just a Sportsman under the plastic it looks like..
Even the computer says Sportsman on it and that's why its over 700 lbs..
Polaris knows how to cut costs by using same stuff for different models...
Thankyou for the charging advice on the spmn 500
I will look into it when i got the chance..
Like your short Polaris diesel rolling coal video...
Just wish those quads had some real power like pickup truck diesels have..
They need to get some diesel engineers in the company I think..
To much gas thinking there..
@@karlw426 No problem I’m glad I could help. And yes the little old diesel needs a small turbo to give it some punch..
I enjoyed this review, great job. We have an 08 Sportsman 850 XP, and it is one hell of a machine. I want my own ATV incase I end up crashing. I'd get into big trouble if I crashed it, lmfao.
Thanks, the sportsman 850 XP is a very nice atv I bought a new one back in 2014 and loved it but decided to sell it a while back.
my 98 sportsman still has the original belt even after the old owner flipped it and destroyed it and it works to this day
That’s impressive to have a 24 year old belt still on there!
I recently got a 98 trailboss 250 for 100 dollars, it has a fresh top end and when I got it it still had the factory tires! I believe factory belt as well! That thing would slide forever on those old ones. Now she wheelies lol.
Been In love with this year Sportsman since it's arrival in 96! Is it still available? Gr8 Vid by the way!
I really do like these machines. I like the older ones like this due to the u joints on the axles instead of the cv boots that are always ripping on the newer models.
I did already sell this one.
Thanks for watching!
@@rockspowersports How much did you sell it for?
@@POLOAZTECA sold it for $2500 prices were high last year.
I have two 500 sportsman’s a 2007 and a 1999. other then the 99s clutch rattling like a mf and the 07s battery always being dead there good quads
just got my 1st 500 h.o 01 amazing machines
Yes the 500 H.O are very nice they have a little more power than this model.
@@rockspowersports thank u
I have a 2000 polaris sportsman 500 4x4 the only two issues I had was fan temperature and voltage regulator that's it
@@abreubrian819 me to i fixed it an sold need a 1000 xp now
Damn that thing’s clean. I have one, same everything. 6500 miles, looks like junk. Works though.
@Brody Morrison That thing was clean, Drove great too! As long as yours is still going that’s all that matters!
They’re fans break a lot on those bikes but I still love em
@Dave Woehr Yes I have noticed that, and then the problem is people still run them… next thing you know you have a blow head gasket.
My grandfather bought a 96 500 brand new I still have it brings back memories, is that New England?
@josh P They’re pretty nice wheelers even 27 years later. And yes I am in Vermont
@@rockspowersports no shit that’s where he got it too in island pond have a camp up there.
@@joshp6024 That’s awesome, I live in island pond!
@@rockspowersports wow what a small world. I remember us riding into South America pond a few times and sometimes we would ride over at NCATV in Stratford NH.
Right sure is! And yeah I go to Stratford quite a bit to ride.
Any opinion on the bf 300s? My first quad. So far. I like it.
Hey buddy I just seen your video very nice video I know this is an old video but do you have any more of those Polaris 500 four-wheel drives anymore like a 96 to 2006 maybe if so let me know thank you
I don’t have any sportsman 500’s right now but I’m sure I will at some point.
@@rockspowersports please let me know if ya get any
I had heard that on these Polaris 500’s that the non HO was a 500cc as stated but that the 500 HO models were actually 550cc do you know if that’s true?
@AMF96 No what you heared is not true. They both have the same cc engine. The differences in the non HO and the HO was the camshaft profile and the carburetor. Polaris did make a 550 engine though but it was labeled as a 550
@@rockspowersports Good to know. Thank you! 👍
Nice review, i just bought one, wqs just curious when you push the a wheel drive button does the front tyres move immediately or only when the back tyres start to lose traction
The all wheel drive systems on these Polaris’s are designed to kick the front tires in when it detects the rear tires starting to spin.
I have a 99 sportsman 500 it’s identical twin
How many wires go to the ignition in an 89 Polaris sportsman 400
Where do you list what you have for sale?
I only sell machines every now and then.. I’m not a used Atv dealer, I’d like to be though. That’s my plan for this year. I usually just post on Craigslist/facebook when I do sell something.
Did you sell it
@Cody Gates yes I did sell this atv.
Right the trial will go get it picture
How do you get the gps speedometer
It’s a feature on my go pro.
I've learned riding 2 up is more of a personal thing. Most machines pre 2000 were advertised as going out with your wife on the back ect. My 2000 500 has absolutely no warnings about riding with a passenger but my old 2001HO says please don't ride with a passenger but... in my owners manual it states Polaris sold a seat and footpegs for a passenger. Explain that one to me.
I've never actually seen a utility machine that's more dangerous with a passenger then it is loaded with 300 lbs of equipment.
I also have a 2009 odes 400 that states it's a 2 person machine. But the Honda rancher it's based off is a single rider. So again I find it to be more personal preference.
I looked at a new one. I was kinda. Surprised. At the build quality. Of a new one. Not very good. The salesman was trying to talk me into it. I went with a brute force 300. And i dont need 4wd. So far. So good. The lil bf. Is just better built.
I got a camp in Newark Vermont
Nice! Next town over.
How much it cost the 500
This one sold for $2500
I have a question I got my 3rd bike today it’s a new to me 1997 Polaris explorer 500 exactly identical to the sportsman 500 so I was wondering is it a sportsman in disguise or is it just what they had before the sportsman
I’m not positive what the differences are but I know there is very few differences in the xplorer 500 and the sportsman. They offered both the xplorer 500 and the sportsman 500 in 1997.
@@rockspowersports ok cool thanks for the info would you happen to know if it takes the same 2 inch high lifter lift as the sportsman
@Thomas Langton Yes it says the highlighter kit will fit either one.
Yea
Hello, could you accept a product testing?
Email the info @ r.ovitt@outlook.com
Thanks
STILL AVAILABLE?
@terry davis Sorry, no this machine has been sold.
@@rockspowersports THANK YOU

Don
I remember when my buddy bought one of those pieces of Shiites brand-new and he jumped one little tiny Hill and the front suspension snapped in half and almost broke his neck what a effing piece of Shiite
@AL for shure It sounds like your buddy bought a lemon or something because I’ve seen these things get beat pretty hard and they keep going.
The chassis. Looked cheap to me. Very thin steel.
Everything flexes. Good bad? Idk. Them strut towers. Look. Just cheap
