It's a good question. In the 40's we know the US was coming out of the Great Depression, jobs were opening up for the war effort and such, so I think working people were probably feeling good. In a racial viewpoint, things were very likely a lot more difficult for minorities, as segregation was huge. Slavery hadn't been abolished for even 100 years yet. From a gender-related stance, I believe it was a stereotype that in military families, women stayed in the states and could find typical jobs or even work in vehicle factories, many women were involved in the production of bombers like the B-17, B-24, B-25, and B-29. For non-military families, it was likely a lifestyle where men were seemingly in charge of the bigger things like the house, the car, money, etc. while many women would stay at home and keep the homes tidy and keep groceries supplied and such. This is just a brief summary of some stuff I know from studying WWII.

Been over that bridge a hundred times. Does not look like that today. Also the NY side of the bridge for the couple miles always looked like a mad max movie to me. I remember going through there in the 1970's as a kid and we would always see a burning car on the side of the road on blocks. Scary. Better today but still I wouldn't want to break down there.

      The Warriors did it, perhaps?

I'm guessing you went straight through a short distance to the Cross Bronx Expressway. It did look like that in the South Bronx. Burnt out buildings. If your car broke down there, it was big trouble for both you and the car.

1940 Bridge toll for a passenger car: .50
    Adjusted for inflation to 2020 that’s $9.28!

What are the four towers next to the toll station? Lightning catchers?

I think they may be lamps. A lighting catcher would not be effective there considering you have the pillars of the bridge nearby
