I only lived in the area for 3 years (2001-2004) but married a Pennsauken, NJ native and fell in love with the Philadelphia area and Action News. I have had MCTYW be my phone ringtone or wake up alarm numerous times over the years. Every station should emulate WPVI for their news operation and their community service.
I remember seeing Gary Papa with awe at my first Eagles game, never to wash my eyes again, and thought about him after the Eagles won the Super Bowl. There is a picture of Jim Gardner and Ducis Rodgers anchoring the parade from the studio, where Ducis left Gary's chair empty. Jim O'Brien is the best. I was born in 1994 and heard stories about him. My classmates in public speaking were trying to impersonate Obama, I was trying to emulate Jim O'Brien. Dave Roberts and the honkers is a television staple. I still honk when I pass the WPVI studios.
My cameo appearance on Action News. 38 minutes 44 seconds. “For five years, Action News Cruiser Number Three performed dutiful service. Car Three met a fiery end this afternoon. The vehicle sputtered to a stop and our photographer managed to maneuver the car off the road and deposit it… on the grass off City Line Avenue where it exploded into flames! We are happy to say no one was hurt. And the car was on its last wheel anyway. But it was a touch embarrassing. We had no choice but to let the car burn on the grass in front of Channel Ten. Perhaps they were enjoying themselves because Car Three, you see, was singularly responsible for beating Channel Ten on hundreds of news stories throughout the years.” Jim Gardner, anchor Action New WPVI Channel 6 Philadelphia.
Been around and lived in different parts of the country. Philly's Action News is still tops in class and professionalism. Good friendly energy for decades.
wanna know WHY the producers of this special decided to to BARELY feature or MENTION their CHOPPER 6!!?? since WPVI was the FIRST station to have a GYRCOM LENS on their chopper. and it while they were talking about how TECHNOLOGY has come so far?? they should have also mentioned that thanks to LIVEU portable units there videographers can to LIVE literally in 30 sec from ANY location. but I supposed the producers didnt think any viewers would be interested in knowing such details. AH well.
and like MOST MAJOR MAKET stations, 6ABC uses there CHOPPER probably MORE so then from from photogs in the field, especially durings SWEEPS. GO figure. and ODDLY enough, GO figure! NOT ONE WISPER about TOLLY! Done tolifson there sports director from IONS ago. but I certainly understand why due to his troubled past.
Interesting to note: Action News took over the top slot of Philadelphia TV news and hastened WCAU into ushering John Facenda into retirement. He became the voice of NFL Films, and the rest is history.
1:11 The man sitting next to Steve Levy is his good friend and weekend anchor Bob Hite who would become a legend in the Tampa Bay area at WFLA Channel 8. When Bob left WPVI in 1977, he literally moved to Tampa by boat. He sailed in on his sailboat called "Kinship".
23:33 - That's the official cue telling my family it's time for Action News! 24:55 - I remember my mom and pop was one of them who called the station. When they first heard that song, they were going "HEY! WHY THEY CHANGED THE THEME!? PUT IT BACK THE WAY IT WAS." I was born in Philly, I remember hearing the theme song each day. By the time I moved to Pittsburgh in 1998, I still remember the theme song in my heart.
I was one of them that thought "what the hell is this new remake, orchestra version!!??!" If Twitter, social media was around back in 96...it would have crashed from the complaints (Well, AOL chat rooms existed..maybe people b*tched on there? 😆) ABC World News Tonight changed the theme I believe Jan. 1 2021...VERY different and terrible I thought. A week later it was changed back. You can't mess around with iconic theme music, it's that simple.
I was born in 1990 I remember all of them and it’s so cool seeing them in 70/80 💯 they do a great job💯💯💯 they came to my son’s school in south jersey and covered the Living Black History Museum that the students did🙏🏽
Oh God, I was in my single digits...a kid and recall Jim's forecast vividly. It really was comical, and of course professional. I always looked forward to it. The "hot spot" was always some odd sounding town in Arizona I remember - and the "cold spot." My mom loved him also, hell everyone did. The day he passed..I was 10 and recall that as well. I was with my mom at a Wawa near my house, few people were visibly upset, crying (We had no idea what was happening). My mom asked the cashier and she broke the news. My mom was just shocked and extremely upset. As was myself. I saw Action News that night...and even recall Jim Gardner just shaken up, choked up. Understandable. Sad sad day!
Perhaps ABC wouldn't let them. This was a non-local sports team event airing in prime time. If Capital Cities still owned it, it probably would have been two hours, maybe even three.
I miss this - so much, I remember my ma used to watch this at 6 in NJ - I remember it so well. I was a kid and I felt so much comfort when she would watch it. Rest well Ma, Chris, Eric, Doug and myself miss you.
I remember the winter of 96' - we had like a week off of school and then it rained slightly the froze! I remember walking 3 feet in the air on the snow! We used to find wood, we'd run and jump on it and fly down the frozen snow. God I miss it. Can I go back? Just for like 5 minutes?
Seems like that, the last big blizzard we had was probably Jan 2016. We're WAY overdue. I predict a big storm this winter. (Then again, I said this last fall...and we ended up with maybe 1" of snow total for entire winter....LOL)
9:32 That tells you something about COVID 19. When you have people who think that COVID 19 is bigger and worse than 9/11, that tells me how a lot of people feel about this pandemic.
I vividly remember the change and just thought "What is this!!??" They got the London Philharmonic Orchestra to re-vamp the new music...and it was ax'ed days later.
Does WPVI-TV’s 50th anniversary of Action News have wishes from Amanda Seyfried, Taylor Swift, Pink, Tara Lipinski, Will Smith, Kevin Hart, Aubrey Plaza, Holly Robinson Peete, and Patti LaBelle?
Wait, wait, wait, waaaaaaaay a got damn minute!!!! You mean to tell me, you mean to fricking tell me Anchorman should be set in PHILLY?! DAFUQ?!?! Man I’m mad!!!
And that's not only ABC's flagship station, but they have the "Eyewitness News" format, which was actually started at KYW Channel 3 (The forerunner, however, started at the former KYW station in Cleveland). Go figure.
No idea, this was aired on Philly channel 6. But I know what you mean, lot of jumpy editing, super quick stories/memories and on to the next. 50 years, lot to fit in for 45min (minus the commercials) Would have been cooler perhaps if this was 90 min, or even 2 hours.
Big fan all my life, but must say hard to watch these days. Jim Gardner has become way too Politically Correct! I imagine ratings on a glide path downward in recent years....Sad!
Every TV station in the country should follow WPVI's example. As first class of a news organization as they come.
there are lots of stations that every station should take examples from

I always tried for Walter Cronkite and Jim Gardner

Happy 50th Anniversary to WPVI's "Action News" (6ABC) That iconic theme song should be nearing 50 years also.
A lot of other stations used the Action News format and the same music (WTNH in New Haven, for example). WPVI was the original though!
October 1st, 2022 has passed, that means the theme is over 50 years old, and it's still a gem to this day!
Been around and lived in different parts of the country. Philly's Action News is still tops in class and professionalism. Good friendly energy for decades.
Great history! Nothing can take down 6ABC's Action News, or it's theme music. Nothing!

6ABC Action News IS Philadelphia!!!

Goodbye Jim O’Brien Always Miss You
Had me in tears remembering all that and more. Congratulations WPVI and Action News ❤

Should have been two hours long! Loved this

Wow! Happy 50th anniversary Channel 6 Action News!
This was such a great documentary. The very best part of it was the way they ended it. Its so rare I get to hear that ending music. ❤❤❤❤
"Always there, everywhere, and always will be. Action news...News you can count on" That should be cool promo next.
I'm paused some 16 minutes in... it's good to see Don Polec. Glad to see he's still with us!
I remember when I Loved Jim O’Brien The Accu-weather Guy
I remembered When Jim O’Brien Called Jim Gardener Jimbo

WPVI-TV on for 50 YEARS (Half a Century)?! Wow! 1970-Today
Aired on my 41st birthday!
I remember the winter of 96' - we had like a week off of school and then it rained slightly the froze! I remember walking 3 feet in the air on the snow! We used to find wood, we'd run and jump on it and fly down the frozen snow. God I miss it. Can I go back? Just for like 5 minutes?
What a classy organization. Congratulations!
18:16 i think those type of storms are long gone now
Seems like that, the last big blizzard we had was probably Jan 2016. We're WAY overdue. I predict a big storm this winter.
(Then again, I said this last fall...and we ended up with maybe 1" of snow total for entire winter....LOL)
I’m huge fan of action news
In Philadelphia Schools & Works 1989-2020 it's Was 10 Years Ago.
Channel 6 always has the best newscasters. U always remember them. Not so much for other stations. Jim Gardner is the man
Happy 50th Annaversary Action News

25:04 How Dare you take the song, you put the song back.
I vividly remember the change and just thought "What is this!!??" They got the London Philharmonic Orchestra to re-vamp the new music...and it was ax'ed days later.
I loved the Action News theme
The only thing they missed here is an All-Action News roster. Listing all the people that worked for them and in what capacity.
24:45 my favorite part
In the sports section, how could they forget the Broad Street Bullies, and back-to-back Stanley Cups??
this anniversary was dogshit
@@sollyparker3947 It is what it is.
How could anyone fit so much into one hour?
Dont mess with our Action News theme! Needs more bongos though like in the 80s 😂
We play a shortened version of this on WNEP NewsWatch 16 In Scranton-Wilkes-Barre
24:35 That's clearly the 1970-1972 theme vinyl.
Happy 50th Anaversary
When did wpvi started covering news in nj?
Does WPVI-TV’s 50th anniversary of Action News have wishes from Amanda Seyfried, Taylor Swift, Pink, Tara Lipinski, Will Smith, Kevin Hart, Aubrey Plaza, Holly Robinson Peete, and Patti LaBelle?
I. Remembered The MOVE. Confrentation And The Braw At City Hall

Phil Donahue should have appeared on here
I remember Jim O'Brien I remembered. Jim O'Brien called Jim Gardner Jimbo
I also remember Gary PaPa
WABC copied the majority of these promos that the so funny part they learn from Philly.
And that's not only ABC's flagship station, but they have the "Eyewitness News" format, which was actually started at KYW Channel 3 (The forerunner, however, started at the former KYW station in Cleveland). Go figure.
The editing of this retrospective is terrible. Too fast and not easily grasped. Who did the editing ?
No idea, this was aired on Philly channel 6. But I know what you mean, lot of jumpy editing, super quick stories/memories and on to the next. 50 years, lot to fit in for 45min (minus the commercials) Would have been cooler perhaps if this was 90 min, or even 2 hours.
