    Talking about how doing recording for Siri would probably drive you mad reminds me of a Football video game i worked on many years ago. The VO for the commentary meant that the commentators needed to record essentially the name of every footballer in the world, in four different levels of excitement, which took a very long time.
    Apparently one of the people doing this just walked out part way through and never came back because they found it so unbearable.

There are always going to be people doing things they shouldn't do. As long as we can deal with it appropriately when they do, there isn't a problem. As you say, there is already a law against passing off. The fact that people sometimes break that law does not mean we have some fundamental societal issue.

    Fairly sure that the AI voice debate is more nuanced that portrayed here. Seems they have a voice actress who supplied the voice that is supposedly Johansson's voice and at least on first inspection that claim was proven. Not sure that the unnamed voice actress should be banned from making a living off her voice just because it "sounds like" someone else. IP law gone mad if it turns out to be true.

    • @pd4165
      @pd4165 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you ask someone to be the voice of your product why do you want their voice? If it doesn't add profit then what's the point? And if it adds profit then the owner of the voice should be paid, because they're contributing.
      If someone has a similar voice then fine - we're not all Morgan Freeman or James Earl Jones.
      But if you like someone's voice enough to ask them to do voiceover work and then get someone to do a facsimile when you refuse, then that's iffy AF.
      It's a slam/dunk IP issue in this case - once you've asked you can't put the cat back in the bag. They should just have got the 'impersonator' in straight away - if they just happen to naturally speak like someone else that's not an IP issue, we all sound like we do, unless we're acting. ScaJo doesn't have a massively distinctive voice so if they'd not revealed their hand it'd be a hard one to prove.
      Your point about someone not being allowed to make a living - imagine being MorganFs voice double. That's not going to be easy on you because MF has a reputation (IP) to protect...and everyone will either think you're scoring a free ride on that or are unlucky AF, because it's not your fault nature made you that way. But I can't play professional football because of genetics and I have to suck it up - life's tough like that.
      In the music world it frequently happens that you work under a name for years, and do moderately well. But if someone comes along and absolutely smashes it using the same name then they get to keep the name. And then they might even persecute you for usung their name. IP can be cruel because someone has to win.

    I stopped listening to the radio four today program because of the back-and-forth that just became pointless. (No pun intended!)
    The AI developments, speaking as somebody who spent 40 odd years in IT, is probably going to be very bad. It has incredible potential for good but I think the companies involved are just motivated by money and what they can do. It’s going to be scary. The scaling up of the compute power with NVIDEA graphics cards and the abilities of these large language models and multimodal models are just off the scale.
    Personally I think some of the development of the last 18 months isn’t even exponential it’s larger than that. I hit 70 in a few days, I’ve been fascinated by AI since seeing 2001 in 1967, now I don’t think it’s a good idea. Once we achieve AGI it won’t necessarily be that long before we invent super intelligent AI and that it is even scarier.

    Why does everyone in the UK mispronounce Scarlett Johansson's name YO-hansson? Isn't she well-known over there? I thought she was one of the biggest box office stars in the world. It seems odd that Brit presenters don't know how she pronounces her name.

    • @pd4165
      @pd4165 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Because Johansson is a Scandinavian name and back home in Denmark (where her dad is from) that's how you pronounce Johansson.
      At least that's what all the Johanssons we are aware of do - Scandinavians come over for football matches or cheap drinking weekends (flights are cheap, Scandinavian booze is expensive) or play in our football leagues etc.
      Jo-han-son appears to be a US variant, in Europe we hear Yo-hahn-son.

    Odd to hear so many Americanisms creeping. "Smarter" instead of "more clever". "Nuts" instead of "batty" or "balmy". Surely there is room in entertainment for the King's English.

      How are those Americanisms? "Smart" meaning clever has been in the English language since at least 1571, long before America was a thing. And "nuts" has meant crazy for centuries on either side of the pond.
      BTW, you mean "barmy", not "balmy". "Balmy" is the American spelling, ironically...

    IMO I don't think people should be able to protect the 'vague sound of their voice', there are 7 billion people on this earth and an AI will always sound like one of them - as long as they are not trying to claim it actually is scarlett doing the voice

    • @leelaunay5613

      Due to the film 'Her', there is inherent value in using her voice specifically. They asked Johanson directly for permission to use recordings of her voice as the training input, which she denied - I believe deadline reported that Spike Jones who directed Her also denied them permission. They then put the AI voice out publicly anyway. That is the issue, they used recordings of her voice to create the digital profile after having permission refused. It's super shady, and when they were called out they quickly pulled it down and put up one that had not been trained on recordings of her voice. The AI no longer sounds like Johanson.

      @@leelaunay5613 they are not using her voice specifically, it isnt even clear they have scrapped her voice to make the voice. Obviously there is a chance she could win a case in the courts so they are taking the risk adverse approach. I am saying I don't think it is right that people can protect their voice - it isnt an artistic creation

      @@user-bw8qc9tr6r Seems reasonable for actors at least to be able to protect their _likeness_ whether it's their face or voice - that's part of their living after all (and part of why the US actors union was on strike last year). This is already settled law in other contexts (it wouldn't be OK for instance to ask Johansson to model for a product and then when she refused just seamlessly Photoshop her face into the adverts) so I suspect if/when this issue ever gets to court they'll just amend the existing legislation.
      But whether it actually _is_ her voice is a different question. OpenAI at least claim it's another actress they hired for the purpose (if there's new information though i'd love to see links etc.). The original demo is still easily watchable online, no one has "pulled it down" (though yes, they removed the voice from GPT4-o itself) and personally I didn't when I first heard it and still don't now think it sounds much like Scarlett Johansson. It does _remind_ me of her character in "Her" but mainly because it's designed to sound like a "generic flirty American woman".
      Don't get me wrong BTW, they _may_ have used her voice in training and then tweaked it later (after she refused permission, more than once IIRC) so they could plausibly deny it - this is a multi billion dollar company, blithely ignoring individual rights is nothing new to any of them - AND Sam Altman _definitely_ shot himself in the foot by tweeting "Her" when they launched the demo AND I think it _is_ slightly creepy but mostly because it sounds like a stereotypical tech bro fantasy of a woman (giggly, flattering, breathy etc.) rather than because OpenAI stole Scarlett Johansson's voice specifically.
