Hamsters don't like tubes, they like tunnels THEY can dig in deep substrate in large cages of unbroken floorspace. Please do not do this... that poor hamster was so stressed and the steep tubes could cause fall damage, and all that can kill them in multiple ways.

@@LordDragox412 Nah he has a point tho. I don't blame the family for it, but most animal cages are way to small for the animals we put in them. Instead I blame the pet stores for advertising these small cages and fish tanks as good enough. A enclosure of the appropriate size would take up too much room and/or be to expensive to have mass market appeal, so they sell these cramped things for the wrong animal to make more money, rather than trying to give the animal a decent quality of life. Is it an unsafe environment for a hamster? Yes. DO I blame them for believing the PetSmart employee who told them it would be good enough for the hamster without doing their own research? No. Do I want people to be more informed so that in future if they ever get a pet they know what they need to do in order to get size appropriate enclosures and ultimately give the pets a better quality of life? As a wise man once said on the topic of accessorising with hamsters: "Make sure they're tied tight to your belt. You don't want them to fall off, like, 'cause, what if you've got seven hamsters in balloons hanging off your belt, and you're jogging, and you're happy, but then a couple of them fall off, but that's cool, you still got five, that's enough,“ still, then you can keep jogging, and maybe two or three more come off, and now it's getting not as much fun, and now it's not a look anymore, now you're--you got two or three, in-in-in-instead of a whole bunch, and, and people are starting to notice, 'cause if you've got a lot of hamsters hanging off your belt, people are gonna be like, "Wow, that's a lot of hamsters," but if you've only got two, people are gonna be like, "Hey, what's with the hamsters?" or, or, like, if you only have one, people are gonna come up and say, "You know, you got a hamster hanging off your belt," like, like, they're, they're gonna think maybe you didn't know, or maybe it was an accident or something. And, and, and, and people are gonna say, "Hey, how come you've got a hamster in a balloon hanging off your belt?" And, and what are you gonna say? "Well, I left the house with seven but six of them fell off"? People are gonna think you're an idiot. You see, you've gotta be able to demonstrate that what you're doing is intentional, otherwise people will think you don't know what you're doing. You've, you've gotta appear in the know. I'm kind of a fish expert, what you displayed in this this video albeit the tank conditions or the "vest", would very much be considered animal abuse to anyone who knows how to actually take care of fish.
And I don't mean take care of fish as in little Timmy's carnival prize gold fish in a 3 gallon bowl, i mean people who know that a single comet goldfish (the kind you have) need at least 40 gallons for just one fish, because they get huge, and they produce tons of waste.
So if you plan to keep those fish, please research their care requirements and the nitrogen cycle, and put them in a pond, and if you can't, give them to someone with a pond who knows wtf they are doing.
So in short, No those goldfish are extremely unhappy, most likely stressed out, living in awful conditions, and will most likely die soon if you don't get your shit together or give them to someone who does‼️
i can tell that they were careful with the hamster but hamsters are so, SO fragile that even so there was significant risk of injury to Frog....
nevermind that... the goldfish probably were hopefully not in there for long enough for there to be significant amonnia build up but goldfish are absolute poop machines and actually need very big tanks! Theyre also probably very stressed out from that whole thing :(
I was biting my nails throughout this entire video because frog as well as the fish look so stressed out. I'm sure that there wasn't a lot of research put into the animal care side of this video which is really disappointing, especially nowadays where information like that is super accessible. :(
I like how he did rigorous simulative testing on what would happen if he was attacked with a baseball bat while wearing the vest
Nice work Will, and the unexpected collab with a funny 12 year old was a win as well. Whether it was her idea or yours, that full house tour of future hamster tubes was perfect.

Same goes for the goldfish. They can easily life for 15-20 years, sometimes a lot longer. Not the way most people keep them, though. :/
@@exotherm42 yeah.. fish are so abused animals its unreal. It feels like people don't think them as living beings?? :/ And yeah, currently my eldest hamster is way past his prime at 2.5 yrs (in human years around 85 yrs) but he's doing good and is very active! I like how the fish were actually correct if you consider the math question in binary. One zero is how you represent two in binary.
Maybe talk to Michael Reeves about proper goldfish care. I know people consider them throw away pets but they deserve so much better. :/
This looks fun and games, but those tubes are actually pretty dangerous for hamsters! When they fill their pouches with food, they can get stuck and suffocate in the tubes. Furthermore when they pee in them, ammonia builds up, which is toxic. They discourage digging, because well, can't really dig through plastic. When in direct sunlight, hamsters can easily overheat in the tube. The rubbing against the plastic can cause hair loss, sores and wounds. And often the small holes are too small and hamsters can suffocate. When they chew on it, they can die from the microplastic. Better sell the tubes and buy a huge cage with places to burrow and go to college.
Similar things are true for the fish thing, if the tubes are too small, the fish can get stuck and have wounds from rubbing against the plastic. Also they can't really be cleaned and the water in them often doesn't reach the filter...
Back in the 70s they had a product called habitrail which was a hamster cage with a bunch of similar tubes. My friend had one and his hamster had lost a bunch of hair on its tail. I don’t know if it was caused by the tubes, but after that instead of calling it habitrail we called it half-a-tail.
After hearing the idea on Safety Third, I'm really glad you've taken the failed patents out of just the workshopping phase. Hope this can get made into a show!
I just wanna say - please don't do this, you'll just stress the shit out of your hamster. Hamsters have terrible eyesight so they won't care about the view, and the environment moving and shaking can give them a panic attack.
sounds like they need to get good lol
Okay and?
Hello Mr. Hamster 🐹
You’re not supposed to put hamsters in tubes. While they are natural burrowers, said burrows aren’t made of plastic and don’t make super sharp turns straight down. Hamsters originate from the desert, and because of this they are not made for heights. They are not spatially aware of heights and even a small fall can give them brain damage.
Lots of pet products aren’t ethical, even though they’re marketed as such. And lots of pet store employees are told what to say to customers to get them to buy the products. The setup in the background doesn’t look criminal for a temporary stay, which is good. It just makes me nervous seeing the tubes 😰
Edit: also the fact that clear curved plastic is very disorienting for animals to be,,, trapped in
Edit 2: …. Don’t put fish in tubes. It’s really stressful, the tubes can have dangerous chemicals on them, and ITS REALLY STRESSFUL. Also I doubt he cycled or did anything to make the water safe for the fish. Do your research before taking care of animals. There’s not remotely enough space for the fish and the ammonia levels are going to spike very quickly, essentially poisoning the fish with their own poop, leftover food, and corpses. And they’ll run out of oxygen 😟
Edit 3: the fish are not enjoying the vest I’m sorry 😞
I can’t believe you would ever post a video involving an animal while clearly knowing nothing about the species itself and its needs. Hamsters are incredibly mistreated and it’s content like this which promotes the abuse of them.
The tubes used can be seriously dangerous for them. The ventilation is extremely poor inside them. This combined with that fact that the hamster would be in an unfamiliar environment that they cannot escape from would make the whole experience very stressful. Hamsters are extremely sensitive to stress and even a short period of stress can lead to major illnesses and death.
The whole idea that hamsters always die young is because their owners knowingly or unknowingly abuse them. I’ve owned 14 hamsters and all of them have have lived long enough to die of natural causes. Please take more care in researching an animal before constructing a dangerous device that you are putting a living animal inside.
Exactly. Hamsters are so baldly mistreated, it’s so upsetting to see this where there’s clearly not a single care about the animals’ well-being.
Good to see you uploading videos again (hopefully). I know I'm probably one of hundreds of these comments, but you were the reason I decided to go into mechanical engineering in college and I really missed seeing your videos. The Hamster and Fish care seem lacking. I know this is supposed to be haha funny but it feeds a lot of misconceptions about hamster and specifically goldfish care. I hope they recieved better care after this. The platic cages and tubes are actually really dangerous for hamsters, who are prone to stress as is and goldfish need huge tanks or ponds, not a tiny little tank...

So I'm no expert on the husbandry of hamsters or fish, but I do know a thing or two and not nearly enough people are making a stink about how badly these animals are veing treated in this video.
Those tubes are not safe for hamsters. Hamsters have been known to get stuck in them and the ventilation is pretty poor, despite having holes. Hamsters aren't climbing animals, they don't really want to climb through wacky plastic tubes. You're putting Frog in a really stressful situation,. Same goes for the fish.
17:09 Those cages looks really really small for hamsters. Hamsters need deep and wide aquariums filled with material to burrow in. Despite how small a hamster is, they need the room to explore and run arround. Imagine keeping your dog in one room it's entire life. Even if it fits and can walk around, it wouldn't be healthy for the dog. Likewise, it's not good for hamsters.
I understand that William and Frog's owner are probably just ignorant. Obviously they're not trying to be malicious. But should we really be mixing up small fragile animals in wacky engineering shit?
We live in a society, Batman. A society that treats these small animals as mere toys. Not as living things that deserve a quality life. I hope the word gets to Frog's owner to get a better enclosure for Frog. Victoria Raechel has great videos about hamster husbandry. Most of what I've learned about hamster husbandry is from her.
