- The Northrop Grumman (formerly Grumman) EA-6B Prowler is a twin-engine, four-seat, mid-wing electronic warfare aircraft derived from the A-6 Intruder airframe. The EA-6A was the initial electronic warfare version of the A-6 used by the United States Marine Corps in the 1960s. Development on the more advanced EA-6B began in 1966. An EA-6B aircrew consists of one pilot and three Electronic Countermeasures Officers, though it is not uncommon for only two ECMOs to be used on missions. It is capable of carrying and firing anti-radiation missiles (ARM), such as the AGM-88 HARM missile.
Prowler has been in service with the U.S. Armed Forces since 1971. It has carried out numerous missions for jamming enemy radar systems, and in gathering radio intelligence on those and other enemy air defense systems. From the 1998 retirement of the United States Air Force EF-111 Raven electronic warfare aircraft, the EA-6B was the only dedicated electronic warfare plane available for missions by the United States Navy, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Air Force until the fielding of the Navy's EA-18G Growler in 2009. Following its last deployment in late 2014, the EA-6B was withdrawn from U.S. Navy service in June 2015. The USMC plans to operate the Prowler until 2019.
The Cavalese cable car disaster of 1998, also called the Strage del Cermis ("Massacre at Cermis") occurred on February 3, 1998, near the Italian town of Cavalese, a ski resort in the Dolomites some 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Trento. Twenty people died when a United States Marine Corps EA-6B Prowler aircraft while flying too low, against regulations, cut a cable supporting a gondola of an aerial tramway. The pilot, Captain Richard J. Ashby, and his navigator, Captain Joseph Schweitzer, were put on trial in the United States and were found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter and negligent homicide. Later they were found guilty of obstruction of justice and conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman for having destroyed a videotape recorded from the plane and were dismissed from the Marine Corps. The disaster, and the subsequent acquittal of the pilots, strained relations between the United States and Italy

My son Cmdr. Marc 'Oral' Sstirton (ret) drove the EA-6B and EA-18G. Starting with the 'Prowler' in 2003 with VAQ-129 RAG at NAS Whidbey Island then with VAQ-136 Guantlets CVW-5 Atsugi, Japan flying off the USS Kitty Hawk ending in 2007. Then was sent to NAS Norfolk to start on the development of the EA-18G 'Growler' in 2008. He later was sent to NAS Fallon with VX9 Vampires. flying the 'Growler.' Spent the rest of his 12 year career with VAQ-129 as a Instructor Pilot flying the EA-18G 'Growler.'
One of the few AC expected to bring all their "weapons" back to the boat. You weren't supposed to jettison the pods, except for very limited conditions. most AC drop stores if you had flight problem, Loss of engine, etc. They were, as I recall, back in the 80's about 2 million a pod.
"The guys who turn the wrenches are the ones who deserve the credit". - now that's a guy I would work for any time! :)
I was one of the original "P;ank Owners" with VAQ 136 Gaunlets formed in April 1973. We subsequently deployed aboard the USS Kitty Hawk CVA 63.
Thank you for your service..God Bless America!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome flight deck video!
Air Crew were awesome to chat to, never made ya feel like you were bothering them. R.I.P. Ranger 87 Nor Pac
I missed the NOR Pac, but I did catch the last two rides on the Ranger. First Gulf War and Somalia. She was a good boat.
2nd favorite airframe, only surpassed by the Phabulous Phantom
Hands down a very underrated aircraft.
I was an AD on the prowler. VAQ-130
Thank you for the upload. Loved this plane. It always reminded me of a giant moth...a very dangerous moth.
What a beautiful video of deck ops. I especially like the perspective from on the deck itself. It truly shows the power of the vehicles at play here.
A unique and comprehensive video about the Prowler !
Thanks,
George :)
Awesome Thanks for the video!
The A6 just sitting with wings up reminds my of my Doberman just sitting waiting to pounce on a bad guy. Fabulous
It’s an EA-6B.
@@cwg73160 glad you set me straight on that…💀
@@dobermanpac1064 Of course. Especially since this is a video about EA-6Bs and not A-6s.
Got some footage of my old squadron! VMAQ-3 Moondogs. Nice video.
It was awesome to see Q-3 in action. Pretty sure the Gunny with the shades they interviewed was my old buddy Cpl Clinton from when I was with the Moondogs. Sad the squadron has since been disbanded with the retirement of the airframe. Sgt Spence, Q-3 Powerline\QA 1994-1998.

I modeled a 1/48 prowler and this is good reference stuff! thanks.
+666bobod I've done a few of the Revell Prowlers...this really is a good reference. I never knew that those red pitot tube covers were integrated parts of the jet before this.
My dad used to fly in those prowlers they so cool
Just my opinion . But the USN A - 6 All weather tandom seat BOMBER Is not a ugly plane it can carry more bombs then a
B -17 it can hit back in a fight and the Prowler vertion can jam you WiFi up so bad you'll never get the signal untangled
My grandpa served in the Navy for 32 years E9 Mastercheif, and the EA-6B is my favorite plane the Navy had
A capable airplane isn't a good enough descripition for it. Basically unstoppable and unbeatable. Ugly and old, cheap to fly and easy to maintain.
I was allowed the honor of serving with VAQ-132 from April 1981 to August 1985. Served aboard USS Eisenhower during good times as well as not so good (Beirut). I came in as an AMEAN and left an AME2. I remember two of my shipmates with the most fondness, AME1 Leo F. Lindley (my sea daddy), and AME2 David Hope (my roomie). I wish other memories were as clear as they should be, alas, I have subjected myself to much since then. If anyone finds this page who was from that era, and remembers the "Moose", drop a note.
disneydude45, I don't recognize your shipmates, but I was an AE2 in VAQ-132 1976 to 1980. Two WESTPACs on the Connie and a couple of runs on the Ike.
Awesome stuff 👍🇳🇿
Love seeing them takeoff during Flight OPS Onboard Ranger 87/90 VAQ-131 Lancers
Awesome video! Thanks for not ruining it by putting shi**y music over the top!
Thank you for noticing… I did try to get licensing to put “highway to them danger zone” over this video but I was unable to secure the licensing.
Was hoping they would cover the jamming capabilities of this plane. First ones in.
Sweet video .....ty so much for posting it
We called her "The Station Wagon"...... or The "Drumstick" for the A-6. Nice looking aircraft of you ask this former Aviation Boatswain Mate Second Class....
Sometimes I forget just how loud these things are
The best radar jammer ever made
Very well done
Grumman Navy for the Win!
Long live the Bunny
I wonder when was the last time a Prowler flew with a pilot that was older than the plane? :P
my father used to fly in these
Love the Prowler but I have to admit- the EA-18 Growler is a critical part of the Navy's ongoing across the board RECAP (Reduction in Capabilities) program. Without the Growler, our nation's collective stepping down of performance would be hampered, troubling the eastern european control by Russia.
Green Sea Ships From articles I've read., the FA-18s have a 10k limit on their airframes. If I understand correctly, some squadrons are being replaced with F-35s. Do you have any skinny on how this plays out for the Growlers?
One incredibly noisy airplane. I lived in a barracks above the airfield at Cubi Point in the early 80s. Lost many hours sleep listening to these things doing FCLPs.
you should hear the thing that replaced it
These used to take off from Chu Lai at night with a maximum bomb load and minimum fuel with a tanker waiting overhead so they could bomb the Ho Chi Minh trail.
@@michaelparr3928 "Two squadrons of EA-6B Prowlers flew 720 sorties during the Vietnam War in support of US Navy attack aircraft and USAF B-52 bombers."
@@michaelparr3928 The EA-6As were in Country a Marine Squadron. The Prowler showed up around 1970/1971 but they used them as standoff Jammers. They didnt get the AGM-88 until the mid 80s. The EA-6As carried the Shrikes.
Those would have been A-6 Intruders not EA-6B Prowlers.
EA6B Prowler- the flying station wagon
Without the Prowler, there could not have been a Growler. VAQ-131 Lancers 1978-82.
My dad flew VMAQ-2 75-78
Elton Hyland: Watch out for the submarine, he can pick up all your jammer stuff.
All the Navy EA-6B's have been retired in 2015. Now the F-18 Growler does it's job.
No "F" in EA-18G
one beautidul plane
I'm curious, what this aircraft need 4 pilots to operate it?
rumpelstikin One is the pilot and the other three are Electronic Countermeasure Officers which are in charge of navigation, communication, weapons and systems in the aircraft
@@BisbyeThat didn’t answer the question. You only listed the names of the positions in the aircraft.
These separated compartments (for / aft) remind me to the B58 Hustler. However, including a much better view !
Not sure why you had to put the cable car thing in. Being nazis also strained the relationship.... the plane is an awesome aircraft and the airmen are heroes
I dont care what anyone says, tadpoles is sexy.
Why four pilots required???
@ Hemant Kohre • There are four people on board. One is the pilot, the second is the copilot & depending on the role of the aircraft people # 3 & 4 can be navigator, rso, weapons systems operator, ATC controller, engineer, load master, radar operator, and any other jobs that nobody talks about.
1 pilot, 3 ECMOS. ECMO 1 who sits next to the pilot handles navigation, comms and DECM. ECMOS two and three in the aft cockpit run the jamming pods.
Tio Sam...
Great....
Best fix-wing airframe and flatform..... A10s A6s F15s F16s C130s
😊👍
Commanders bird?
1 dislike so far. Feel sorry for the Iraqi Radar Operator from the first Gulf War.
And the families of the 20 Italian skiers killed in Cavalese
Vara There were a lot of ‘white screens’ on Iraqi radars during Desert Storm; ask the Serb visual observers whether they could use their vHF radios during Operation Allied Force; ask the UK Tornado pilots about their support over N. Iraq with Operation Northern Watch,. Throughout the entire operational lifetime of the Prowler, no aircraft being directly supported by EA-6B’s were lost in combat (1971-2015). Support to major US/NATO/coalition operations were provided by Prowler from Operation Linebacker III in Vietnam, Operation Allied force in Yugoslavia from carriers and from Aviano, Italy, Operation Northern Watch from Incirlik, Turkey; Operation Southern Watch from carriers and from Oman and Kuwait; Operation Iraqi Freedom from carriers and from bases in Oman and Kuwait, Operation Enduring Freedom from carriers and from Bagram AB Afghanistan. It IS ugly, slow (subsonic), but ground-based troops and strike aircraft seem to want it around when they went to war. I was proud to support it from its OT&E in 1971 until I retired in 2008, I know it provided me with a great career, and many, many hours either on the carrier or ground based in Europe and the Middle East. It surely gave me great, great memories!
So it's like to be on the family car, dad and mom and the 2 kids. When landing succeed I guess the whole family say thank you Dad and the 2 kids behing gets all agitated !
USS Michael T. Flynn, perhaps?
Its present name I find offensive.
USS Q?
USS Flynn. CVN82. USS Flynn
I wonder why the EA-6B Prowler was not called the Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. I always looked at EW as magic spell casting and the EWSOs as Wizards.
it was in service long before the movie Lord of the Rings came out…been flying since 1970….
Seats
Prowlers always get bashed
Growlers don't.
😂😂😂😂
праулер на самом деле хороший самолёт или враньё?
Игорь Михайлов No airplane is perfect. but for its mission, I believe it is the best. There are not many airplanes that are so tough they can slice cable car wires and land safely.
@@wcolby всё таки не враньё, спасибо. 1? - радиус действия с палубы(если не секретно)? предполагаю около 230 км? Некрасивые машины не летают.
