I think, when you account for Jokić's defensive rebounds, steals, and his general presence in the deflection/strip zone (which affects offensive play similarly to Wemby's reach threat), people are honestly severely underestimating his defensive influence. Not to mention more advanced tactics, such as positioning and how their whole strategy is built around him not getting into foul trouble, as a long-term defensive investment. In today's NBA, when 50% of shots are either 3 point attempts or simply not a center's responsibility, I really don't see how the number of contests is key in evaluating a player's defensive impact. Is he elite defensively? Absolutely not. But I'd easily put him above average. The fact that he doesn't do it the way other centers do it is just the same story that was always true about Jokić. Doesn't mean it's ineffective, though.
I agree to an extent. I do think it's problematic that the nuggets don't have a real rim protection presence at all tho. Does he do good things on the court defensively? Absolutely. Is he a great defender, my opinion is no.
@@jcbasketballyt yea but if you use the logic of he’s not a good rim protector so his defense isn’t great even tho he’s top ten in deflections and top 5 in defensive rebounding steals and defensive box plus minus. Do we call Giannas a average offensive player cause he can’t hit a middy or 3 to save his life or sga who doesn’t get very many assists no player is perfect at everything but people hold one aspect of his defensive game against him for his entire defensive game. Let’s not forget the okc has a lot of great defensive players and when you have more than one raises the efficiency of the others
Jokic has 47 kicked ball resets, he’s top five in steals and deflections. There are other Denver players who defend the rim because joker is usually at the elbow, wreaking havoc with deflections and steals

The idea that players who aren’t flying through the air swatting shots away at the rim are playing poor defense isn’t supported in the stat sheet.
MVP should be best player, period. Why does team standing even enter into the discussion? Best team gets a ring. Jokic is clearly best player, by whatever incomprehendible metrics one uses.
People like to hold one aspect of his defensive game against him but won’t hold players like giannis accountable on his lack of offensive variety man can’t hit a middy or 3 to save his life but you don’t see anyone calling out his offensive game. If Jokic got a rim protection there wouldn’t be anything about his game people could hold against him and would be the most complete player ever seen.
Great breakdown, keep up the good work!

@markuskramer8666 i agree 100%
Jokic and SGA cannot be compared, Jokic is simply two classes above SGA.
