A momentous occasion for Africa, for East Africa and for African storytelling.
In such times where voices are being swallowed by the tides of time, and extremism the intrinsic value of African storytelling has been recognised. Congratulations to Mister Abdulrazak Gurnah.

8:27 "Eventually I began to write about some of these reflections: Not in an orderly or organised way, not yet, just for the relief of clarifying a little some of the confusions and uncertainties in my mind." Beautiful!

I’m stunned and delighted that (after countless misfires over the decades) the Nobel literature committee actually performed a great service, in shining a spotlight on the underrated work of this wonderful author. “Afterlives” is brilliant, in so many ways

That was the inspiration i needed today, the first day of the new year. I too have a message to share with this world, it might be Kafka-esque in origin but hearts ache for insight delivered with humour, like the lilting "Life is beautiful".

11:38 "Those who came after us had their post-colonial disappointments and their own self-delusions to comfort them, and perhaps did not see clearly or in great enough depths the way in which the colonial encounter had transformed our lives, that our corruptions and misrule were in some measure also part of that colonial legacy."
As a Gen Z from Hong Kong, a former British colony, this quote sums up the sentiment of younger generation who were born at the end of colonial era and post-colonial times, who romanticise colonial rule and are still affected by colonial legacy in not just political, but in every aspect of daily life.
From my perspective, colonialism is still in place internationally through social construct established by colonising nations in the past century and further back, even after the decolonisation efforts. It is hard for people to rediscover their national identities after decades of colonisation, which has wiped out their connection to their roots and has even replaced their sense of belonging with despise towards their cultural origin, and an admiration towards the coloniser.
When I ask myself: Who am I? Where do I come from? What do I believe in? What is an ideal society? I can definitely see the influence colonialism has on my answers. Colonialism is a part of history which is irreversible, with its goods and bads. Although I have not read Mr. Abdulrazak Gurnah's work, I appreciate how he wisely articulates the effects of colonialism in vivid details from multiple perspectives. This approach, I believe, is what makes a piece of literature great account of the most remarkable movements in human history, e.g. Victor Hugo's depiction of the French Revolution and Dickens' description of the Industrial Revolution.
It is already extremely challenging for one to make sense of what is on one's mind, let alone writing it out in an elegant manner, not to mention empathising with others and society as a whole, then write an epic work about it. Mr. Abdulrazak Gurnah' has my utmost respect for his beautiful words and wisdom.
