    This small lecture was fantastic. Erudite, eloquent and very clear. It's made what is a very complicated period in history, way more managable and understandable. I'm gonna go off and read more on the period now! Thanks!!!

    This war deserted germany. More then a third of the population was killed. But it also deserted the collective german soul. It is burned deep in our minds. You will never understand the german character and the german history afterwards if you know nothing about this conflict and what it does to the people.
    Read Grimmelhausens "Simplicissimus". He lived and fought in that war and wrote this as an autobiograhical book.

    Great video, thanks for making it. As a history enthusiast, the Thirty Years War has always been a stumbling block for me. I read C.V. Wedgewood's book on this conflict but it can still be a muddy area. Any recommendations for books on this topic? Any important books to read before grappling with this period in history?

    • @johndever2250
      @johndever2250  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words! Wedgewood is still the classic, but there is a new one out by Peter Wilson that is supposed to be quite good. Maybe I can get to it this summer.

    This was a very brutal war, even by the standards of the times. Whole sways of Germany were left virtually de-populated. Massacre followed massacre, atrocity followed atrocity. And if death by the sword was not enough, we have to remember all the men were away fighting there was no one left to gather in the harvest, result famine which killed more people than the actual fighting, and with all those dead bodies littering the landscape there was disease which killed tens of thousands more.

    • @johndever2250

      John Dever Accuse the words I left out, I have aspegers so some times I type faster than I think. I watch a lot of military history related documentaries and see many on the Napoleonic wars, but this period of history sadly gets neglected by the History Channel, the 30 years wars gets almost no coverage yet it was so important in the history of Europe and helped to shape much of what makes up modern Europe. The English civil wars of roughly the same time span also has been neglected, it is a sad fact that when I walk into the history part of a book shop in the UK it has more books on the American Civil War than the English. I would like to see more documentaries covering the period between 1600 and 1650 as this period saw so many changes in Europe

      long terms wich caused to the thirty age war it would take 30 minutes to clarify it. The result is the beginning of german militarism and the beginning of swiss neutralism and being non belligrants. The beginning of german militarism depent on that armies were not sent home like mercenaries. German princes make a show to have a standing army. There had no money to afford a standing army so they lent it to venice, fighting the Othoman empire, to occupy Gibraltar or fighting back the american revolution for Britain. Gemany was untill the thirty age war the battle ground of what becomes roman catholic or becomes north america french or british, will euope stay under rule of Napoleon, etc. Every prince in Germany wants to a have a fast mobilised and trained army and wants to be a part of the concert of powers and wants to be a part of peace negotiation like the peace treaty of westphalia. German education system based on 3 columns . The 3 columns of schools were tickets to become a simple soldier, a career office, a commander or chief of staff. Military parades were are show not mainly against foues . It was a show for allies to get more subsidies. Look here how we effective we are to shoot down american rebels.

    I am currently a college student writing a paper on the German Question and how the Thirty Years War contributed, along with other historical events. I understand the german question and the thirty years war but the boundaries, when and what comprises Germany as a country and the german character is a little confusing. Do you have any sources or information that could be helpful?

    • @johndever2250
      @johndever2250  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure exactly if you're looking for primary sources, short secondary sources, or longer secondary sources. There's a nice short article from an American perspective on German unification here: history.state.gov/countries/issues/german-unification and some nice primary source documents here: www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/germanunification.asp
      One of the tricky issues in the 19th century was whether the country of Germany would include all German speakers (Grossdeutsch) or whether it would leave out the areas dominated by Austria (Kleindeutsch). One problem that concerned Bismarck was whether the Catholic areas could be fully integrated with the Protestant areas, and so he waged a kind of "Kulturkampf" to attempt to suppress the influence of the Catholic Church. To be honest, I haven't read a book just on the German unification that I can recommend for you.
      The question of the German character is a little more subjective--you have the Romantics in the 19th century giving their views, and then you have the concept of the German "Volk" in the late 19th century and the twisting of that even further by the extreme nationalists in the early to mid 20th century. In the late 20th and early 21st century, the issue is complicated by the East/West split and the reunification of Germany. Depending on the nature of your paper, you could also explore the concepts of Prussian militarism and/or the role of socialism in 19th and 20th century Germany.
      I hope this helps a little.

    Religion in England during the 1600's actually wanted nothing to do with the Catholic faith because whilst James I was tolerant of the Catholics, parliament were very strongly against them. Even before that in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, the was no toleration at all fit the Catholics and they were even hunted out and forced to swear allegiance to the Queen, otherwise they were sentenced to death.
    Protestantism was very different from Catholicism. Not only was it broken away from the Pope and the Holy Roman Empire, but the religion as a whole was a lot more plain and the ceremonies were a lot more simple.

    This is a fine lecture but i dont know what what cours it was meant for. The truth is that there is a couple '' mistake'' in it. Ex: France's house of Valois instead of Bourbon or mentioning electors instead of Prince-Elector. so is is juts omissions in orer to simplify the subject or is it flagrant?

    • @johndever2250
      @johndever2250  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Vincent--I made this for my high school students in a survey course of European history. Thanks for pointing out errors--constructive criticism is always welcome. I definitely simplified this complicated war to try to keep the length manageable. I will review it again and see if I can clarify the points you mention. Cheers!

      Good point. I'm afraid the connection I was using was so poor that a better quality upload would have taken a ridiculous amount of time, and I was anxious to put this up for my students. Perhaps I can go back and redo this one when I have a chance at a higher res.
