Here are your notes: (thank me later) Carthage: -Naval empire -Unified by phonecian empires -City of traders -Ruled by merchant princes -Highly civilized, literate and scientifically advanced. Rome: -had foreign invaders -Land empire -Nation of armies -Republic was run like an oversized military camp -Relatively primitive -what they lacked in money, they had lots of manpower -built their empire through conquest and bloodshed First Punic War: -started on island of sicily -continued for 24 years -Carthage ran out of money and was thrown into a civil war -Rome took vantage and conquered Corsica and Sardina Second Punic War: -Carthage began colonizing the Iberian Peninsula -Romans nervous from Carthage -Conqured Illyria in 219 BCE -Rome declared Punic War 2 in 218 BCE -Hannibal marched over the alps with elephants to conquer rome -Lost seige engines during alps, fatal loss for carthage -Hannibal tried to get other cities to rebel -Hannibal ravaged italy for 16 years -Rome tried to expect a naval war -Macedon took advantage of war to expand -Scipio invaded carthage, got the name “Scipio Africanus” -Hanibal was defeated at the battle of Zama, concluding second punic war -All of carthage’s spanish territory was given to rome -also gained part of asia Aftermath -Carthage was forced to pay a huge fine -After it was paid, Rome forced them to abandon carthage -After carthage refused, rome seiged the city to its death
The problem was that rome was not only caught off guard but their competent leadership was busy elsewhere and they were left with idiots in charge of their army lol
