Gott'a love the H-14 water ballet. Anyone who sails one has done the flopping around and climbing for dear life, trying to get the damn boat to stabilize on one side or the other. I actually use the 14 to take some of my cocky new sail staff down a notch every year. I had a champion Laser sailor that thought he was hot shit a couple of years ago. I put him on the 14 to cool him off a bit. It was blowing g 15-18 Kts and gusty. He said, "Easy, no problem", He was swimming within a minute of me jumping off the boat into the skiff. That old 14 will improve your performance on all the other boats you sail. It forgives no mistakes and demands constant attention. That's what makes them so fun. Add a jib and it's a whole nother level !
The jib is a mysterious subject with the 14. When i raced them there was no jib or trapeze. Hiking was pretty strenuous, but that is how we raced them. The turbo has a jib and trapeze. The question is why no jib even thought the rules were changed to allow the trapeze? When you see them tack and go DDW with no jib it looks kinda lame. I liked sailing the boat with no jib and i could back-tack well, but a jib helps you tack. Seems like the new ppl would have wanted the jib, just sayin
I used to have that problem on the F16 while sailing solo (no jib allowed). During the tack, you have to go all the way to the back of the boat to pass the tiller around the mainsheet. It would put the bows completely out of the water, and as soon as your next wave comes through and smacks the bottom of the hulls, your boat completely stops and then you're at the mercy of the wind. The tiniest of shift would put the bows even higher in the air while the boat is stationary and it was so hard to get moving again. I found that IMMEDIATELY after passing the tiller behind the mainsheet, moving foward as far as possible as quickly as possible really improved tacking performance while sailing solo. With a crew it was never a problem, because their extra weight forward was enough to keep the bows down.
You are truly an expert catamaran sailor and it speaks to your strong character that you publish your mistakes so we can definitely learn from them . Thank you Joseph , and you did not finish DAL !!! Because of your video I just bought an 85 Hobie 14 !!!
Yes sir, the H-14 is a toughy for sure 😀 bah, "oh NOoo Joooe!" for the first. And DARN, darnit! 😠 For the second 😂 frustrating indeed. Good show though. 👏
It's humbling to see you go over the back on race six. I keep reminding myself not to get too far back on the Hobie 14 because it is so short! Even in righting, I have flipped it while sideways if I don't stand in the middle! Great sailing.
My favorite video from you. Not because you flopped, not because you kicked ass. But because it was the portrayal of the average us. Or me in my best performance.
I'm so glad that this hit the spot. I was quite disappointed at the time, especially the 2nd capsize but afterwards I thought that it was a much better video than when everything goes according to plan.
The best way to get rid of any nerves is to dunk the boat a couple of times. Just a couple of comments. You seem to spend too much time managing the sheet/traveller lead. I don't know how the rules regulate that setup but it doesn't seem like a very efficient system. Also the flopper-stopper seems like it should lead back to the middle of the tramp maybe coming up through the center lacing tied off at the rear lacing to the length required for when it's loose and then with a simple toggle tied in further forward that can be pulled up through the center lacing in one motion and secured in the way toggles are secured (under tension with a twist) on the tramp topside . It should be easy-set/easy-release without having to go forward. Otherwise if you get time to practice, practice tacking. Looks like a lot of fun. I love the rolling commentary. It's like Sports Radio where the commentator has to paint a picture, but with video added as a bonus. Very entertaining.
Takes a bit long to get the righting line out. On my 16 I always had both ends tied off to the stanchions, then the slack taken up in the center and tied around the dolphin striker. So it was always ready to go.
@@JoyriderTV Or, optimistic. :) It does hurt the pride a bit, but I always said, if you aren’t capsizing it, you aren’t sailing it. I have never had a chance to sail a 14, was surprised it went over so easily in a tack.
Great video.. shame about the race. Thank you for bringing us along on a full spectrum experience. Doing a 'double dingus', has to be code for a double capsize in a race.😂
I understand that the H14 is a difficult boat to sail, however would you please do an analysis of your capsizes and what you could have done differently . Regards Allan P.s Love the videos Joe, great content.
If you read your messages, you are invited for a private trip down the lower salmon river in Idaho June 23-26. It will be on an Aire 18ft cougar cataraft from pine bar to heller bar.
You are perfect for demonstrating how NOT to sail a H 14,yes I can do better, your (tacking ) is a shocking.Crack the sheet slightly, while staying on the side you were on.Steadily steer the boat through the wind leaving that last bit to push the helm over then smartly move over the tramp to the new side and sheet on.If you have to back the rudders, you need to spend hours and many tacks to get it right. Its NOT that hard.A lot of people might want to have a go,that’s fine.A friend of mine from way back was rubbish, cartwheeling down the river. Not a natural sailor but determined as hell. With his determination he became a very good all round sailor here in Australia, this was in the early days of Rod Waterhouse and Ian Bashford 😀😀😀😀 Have a Hobie Day.
I always figured to move weight forward and pivot around the bows before moving back to deal with the tiller etc and get the square transoms out of the water as much as possible when you are going for speed

Is it significantly harder than sailing a 16?
@@jwgmail Slower, but it's very fussy when it comes to where you plant your ass. Not alot of boats will capsize backwards.

For sure. She wants to buck you off as soon as you stop treating her the right way.
Good girl!!
as tacking is a pain with just the main, can someone tell me why no one is sailing turbos anymore (except me ) ??
The 14 is not for beginners and is my last choice for winter sailing. You're doing great, Joe! We're all cheering for you!!!
Thanks so much

Thanks for sharing, yes that certainly seems like similar symptoms
The 'Hobie Salute' six minutes in. I always say "It's not about winning, unless you win'.
Solid gold!
Second capsize "well at least the righting line is already out!" :)
Saved a minute
Ass over tea kettle Hobie special. You know it's a great boat when it capsizes in every direction.
So versatile

Great stuff! I'm so pleased for you that you've got a 14 - such a great boat.
what a brutal race! It's nice to see also the hard moments
Yeah, not nice at the time, makes for a more entertaining video though

Thanks, yes... I was pretty annoyed with myself at the time.
No pitch pole no party. 🎉
And it’s always a party!!
Hi Joe! Thank you for many awesome videos! YOU ROCK!!
Thanks!!! 🤩

You got that right!
Great video Joe! Good luck on next race! 😎
Thanks!!

Yeah the flopper stopper is a pain to use. If it was my boat I’d change to a cam cleat
More fun to play catchup than to try and stay out front!
Yeah, the fight back is full power
To be honest I didn't think you had a flippin chance in this one. Bouy you proved me wrong. Flippin entertaining video.
Ha, very good. I certainly flipped it!
Sorry for your misfortunes on that particular race Joe but the watch was pure gold!😂
I thought you’d enjoy that
Haha bearing away from that crab pot while flying a hull... thats stuff city right there
yeah, no chance.

Good shout - I was perhaps a little be arrogant thinking that i wasn't going to capsize.

Yeah it was a shame but I now feel more informed from the experience
I call that "the Fred Flintstone" running off the bows while on the trapeze.
Ha, yes. Just needs the sound effects
When you try to catch the wind
You throw the dice
And sometimes you swim
Not once but twice.
Ha! Yes. Nice
Dan Borg is a bullet on the upwind, damn!
He’s no slouch on the downhill too

P.s Love the videos Joe, great content.
That's a great idea. I'll look at that when i get back.
That was brutal
Bit gutted with my poor performance
"These things come in threes". You should have done a third one just for fun.
Ha! Yes, can I do it when I get back to greece?🇬🇷
Nice! Also why I have a righting line on each hull...
Good plan for a quick recovery
Everything comes in threes!
I’m waiting for the 3rd
Holy mother of pearl how much did you drink last night , sailing that thing like a monohuller hahaha
Maybe a tickle too much
The word in WI, is "Ope". P..s Hey Spooner WI guy, have been wondering what the snow levels are in the north?

Go Joe!
🤩
Average sailing, awesome cabaret !!
Ha!! 🙌
Love
🥳🤩
That microphone works better when it’s not underwater.
Ha! Yes, you're not wrong
Ñice reach after first capsize . Boats like people can be very mean 😢
Ha! Yes. It certainly was a learning experience
if you find yourself near canyon lake or corpus christi and want to go out on my old 16 let me know
Maybe next time
not the skippers fault but those tacks are hard to watch (s-l-o-w m-o-t-i-o-n)
More practice required!
Dingus 😂.
That’s me!

Ouch!! but yes you're right. I'll be the fist to admit that i was somewhat of a beginner on the 14.
Thanks for your tips and for going easy on me!!!

Thanks!
Lol😂
yep 🤩
@@JoyriderTV@JoyriderTV Those boats are surprisingly hard to sail; I had no idea they could flip backward like that. Cool!!! Enjoying your videos.
