Great story Eddie, and well done to RTE for airing this at the time. Wouldn't it be great if RTE had a show like this now for our children, telling the great aural stories from our heritage.Imagine the interest it would create in the Folklore, Mythology and the Irish language. But I suppose it's easier peddle the American and English cartoons.

The white horses are interesting. Likely the same kind as the one Oisín rode back from Tír na Nóg. Normally someone who was carried away by the faeries and the changling of them is dead and buried there is no getting them back. But the girl wasn't in the other world when Brian O'Brien grabbed her, but in our world on a white horse. I think while on one of these white horses you'd count as still being in the other world even if you're in this world, but as soon as you touch the ground here you're fulling back in this world and that's that's.

I had a bit of time to think about this story, and it seems to me that the faeries wanted Brian O'Brian and that girl to get married. Perhaps it was part of a game or a bet between the two old women faeries and the ones in the fine clothes. Plenty old women in Irish stories could know things they weren't there to witness, so surely faeries would be even better at such things.
I think the faeries arranged the whole thing, then said exactly what they wanted Brian O'Brian to hear when they knew he'd be at their door. Normally a wealthy man like the girl's father wouldn't have wanted a man of simple means like Brian O'Brian to marry his daughter. But with him being set up to become the brave hero who rescued her from the faeries and looked after her for an entire year while she couldn't speak, she was bound to fall in love with him. The Father would have been in the right state of mind by then to be delighted to have his daughter back after grieving so long and think very highly of Brian O'Brian for what he had done.
That would explain why the faeries never sought to harm or curse Brian O'Brian for taking the girl from them or steeling their special bowl, and why he always happened to be at their door to hear just what he needed to hear.
