I appreciate it that you mentioned the thin red line, for me it's the most unique war movie that's ever made and personally think it's better than saving private ryan. However you missed ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST opening scene, certainly belong somewhere in top 10 best opening of all time
I was actually originally planning on discussing Once Upon a Time in the West's opening - great scene! Had to cut it so the video didn't get too long, but the real ones will notice the clips from it I used :)
Hey man I am from india 🇮🇳 Can u plz put a video about HOW TO WRITE GREAT DIALOGUES like "with great power comes great responsibility" "U either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" (FORESHADOW) "hardest choices requires the strongest will" "Why do we fall sir so that we can Learn to pick up ourselves" "No amount of money ever bought a second of time" "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.” "Hope is a good thing, may be the best of things, and no good thing ever dies" Because I personally believe u have the ability to answer this Because of ur EXPERIENCE@@ArcherGreen
I read in the book Screenplay by Syd Field that the first ten pages are the most important because they hook the audience. This video made things much clearer for me.
The opening dance scene in Mulholland Drive you said isn't explained: I just wanted to make note that it is explained... Later near the end of the film at the dinner party she tells coco what brought her out to LA = she won a dance contest (particular escaping me rn). So the opening is showing what had brought her into the story, hence appearing as she does in that opening sequence and cutting away from it to what has come of her journey in the bed shot Its not a mere symbolic element for sake of surrealism.
Loved the video and It would've been great if u had spoken about the opening of The Exorcist. Anyone can share their insights on the whole mining scene in Iraq just keen to hear about your opinion.
For openers, I like to establish the setting. Typically distant shots showing atmosphere, cityscapes etc.. then cut or fade to a title, then the same with first scene of the film, which I follow up as an intro to who the characters are and their relation to the premise.
The beginning of Star Wars - A New Hope didn't really need that screen crawl. That opening shot of the stars, panning down to see two planets in the distance and one below. Then the blockade runner - it looks big enough with big engines to look like it's booking it. Then the Star Destroyer appears, with the Dolby sound selling how huge it is. They shoot at each other and you know it's a hopeless fight. That tells you how unequal things are, more than dialogue in the interiors of star ships do.
Indiana Jones films might have the best opening scenes for both the greatest and worst action films of all time with Raiders and Crystal Skull. There is, however, also a risk of the opening scene being so good that the rest of the film is a bit of a disappointment. Blade and Ghost Ship come to mind.

Yep! I was about to say, “But I saw OUATITW in the video!” 😮

The thin red line is so much better than saving private ryan thematically. Glad you contrasted their differences.
What a video mate! One of the best
You’re back let’s goo! I have sworn by the scream movie intro there the best at setting up plot without saying much but showing it.
great video mate. dope 👌
Still remember the one from Inglorious Basterds. Christoph Waltz's best

As long as the walk is interesting, I don't care a wit if it actually goes anywhere. I like walks for walks' sake. This is a good walk.
THERE’s NO WAY HE’s BACK BAHAHAHAHA

Well of course opening scenes matter. Stating the obvious there
