  • I've finally gotten to experience the frustration of trying to drive rivets to attach the leading edge ribs to the spar web. A challenging session, but it will all work out in the end. Following guidance from Van's builder support, I'm using solid rivets for the inboard and outboard ribs, and blind rivets for the interior ribs.
    About 2.5 hours total in the Gilbertson Aero Factory today.

    I'm so grateful for your videos. I'm attaching my leading edges now and just got my ass kicked trying to get the rivet gun in past the first bays. I was able to drive the outboard two ribs and the inboard most rib but the rest are going to have to get LP4's

      That’s a tough spot. I don’t know how anyone can do it all with solid rivets and not just destroy the thing in the process.

    To me it was no way riveting with the gun. I used LP4-3 and LP4-4 blind rivets. Much easier and accepted by Van’s.

      I would have done exactly the same. But, while I was waiting for builder support to open for phone calls, I read that someone was able to get they’re gun inside the first and last bays of the leading edge. So, I figured I would try it out while I was waiting… It was tricky to figure out how to make it fit, but it ended up working brilliantly. Now, I just need to wait a few days for the wedge tool to allow pulling rivets at and angle, and some LP4-4 rivets for the inboard ribs that have the spar doubler.
