I love this side of her! The Lemonade Era was absolutely insane and the performances were second to none. The Super Bowl, Formation Tour, VMA’s, Grammy’s, BET, ughh everything from that Era was next level! That Era was a little darker which makes sense because it was dealing with infidelity and racial disparities that Black Americans were facing/face. However, it was one of the greatest bodies of modern work created and it has upbeat moments. The best way to experience Lemonade is to watch the film first because that is how the world got to experience it for the first time! A true Masterpiece! 😊🐝✨
I don’t think a part of her died, but definitely an evolution. Loss of innocence maybe. But Lemonade was and remains my favorite album and creative work by Beyonce. So rich with emotion and historical reference to Black culture & experience in the U.S. Cannot wait for you guys to get there.
Lemonade goes thru the different stages a person goes thru when they've been betrayed by someone they loved and trusted. The 1st song (6 Inch) was the feeling of emptiness, stage...and the poems you hear her reciting is from a famous Kenyan poet named Warsan Shire.
To Nathan's point, yes, this version of Bey was a little shocking at first. When the Lemonade film debuted on HBO, we had no clue what to expect. But this ushered in such a rich era of storytelling from her in her visuals, her music, and her live performances that, I think, officially solidified her superstar status. She also had a personal goal to perform every track from the album live, so we were well-fed as members of the Beyhive!
These are among my favourite songs by her! And to your question, personally, I did worry for her, but it was mostly during the OTR tour, where it was quite obvious they were working through something, which it turns out they were. They apparently even separated at some point and got remarried, if we're to go by what they say in their later music. You can never be sure because they're very private about their personal life. Also, I know you guys will eventually get to the Lemonade album, and I'm so excited to watch your reaction to that, but it's such a dense album. It's not just about infidelity, it's also about generational trauma and about being black, and a black woman at that, in a country that has never been kind to black people. I would highly recommend you listen to the Dissect podcast's analysis of the album. I know it might not work with the channel's format or youtube as a platform. But I would suggest listening to it at least on your own time after watching the album. Because every little thing in the album, the sounds, lyrics, imagery has so much meaning and references packed into it, it's insane and almost impossible to get without a sound background in that area of history. But yes, really looking forward to Lemonade. Love your reactions!
The Lemonade album and visual album is a story with different chapters/feelings. From Intuition and Apathy to Accountability and Forgiveness. Six Inch is seen as the chapter Emptiness with the feelings Grief and Loss (after the chapter Apathy with the song Sorry)🐝 It's super interesting and it could help to search the Lemonade chapters. Each chapter is connected to a song and it tells Beyoncé's story while dealing with everything.
I told you Beyonce is a chameleon, she can make you feel what she wants you to feel. By the time we got the Lemonade project they had already went to therapy and worked on their marriage. They made an album together after making their own solo album addressing the issue. Thanks guys
She had multiple performances of the Lemonade album (besides the Formation Tour) and she’d give them phases/names of the journey… and this Particular performance was dubbed ‘Revenge’ hence the dark side coming to the fore with her performing 6 Inch & Ghost. She is always about light and hope but the beauty about her is that she commits with her performances and emotions required at that particular point in time.
Listening to someone explain why they don't like Beyonce when performances like this one exist is like listening to someone explain why the earth is a flat disc and not a sphere. It's fascinating.
Love your reaction. I'm disappointed though that you're not seeing Lemonade in its entirety. Even if you post it in parts, it makes more sense as a cohesive project. We got to see the dark aspects as a part of her growth and evolution. I understand you have to do it in parts for your schedules but... Have a great week guys
It wasn’t necessary shocking… she started teasing “DarkYonce”/ “AgressiveYonce” a song called “Bow Down.” That one was incredibly shocking and exciting.
Exactly, she had previously shown snippets/glimpses of that side of her. And to finally become a mom, get her body back, and delve deeper into and mesh together the mind/body/spirit/sexuality/creative/artistic side of her us what genius is. The world was getting the Fifty Shades trilogy, as well, as The Weeknd’s darkness was happening, too…. so the dom/sub energy was definitely in full-swing!
To answer question Nathan's it was VERY hard to get thru the Lemonade album for me personally, it was a very dark album for me. I do love a couple songs but for the most past the album its very gloomy and different. Self Titled was already dark in my opinion and it got darker around this time. I was extremely excited when Renaissance was finally released. Alot of people love Lemonade tho, its my LEAST fav album of all of them. Amazing review, cant wait to hear you guys talk about the full album
I kinda agree with that. I love Lemonade but I was ecstatic when Renaissance came out because I fell in love with her during her 4 era--i can go back and appreciate Lemonade and self-titled sonically, but I love how she's able to transmit joy.
As a huge Beyonce fan Lemonade is my least favourite album but the film is phenomenal and its an amazing body of work. The formation world tour (just after the release of Lemonade) was also incredible! Its a journey for sure and you can see Beyonces growth and how she isnt afraid to experiment and she nails it everytime ❤
It was hard to watch and when she and Jay Z did the On the Run tour in CA (pre Lemonade), it was CLEAR AS DAY that they were on the brink of divorce. Beyonce the consummate professional wasn't even trying to hide it. We were expecting a divorce announcement and instead got Lemonade.
Everyone loves self-titled and don't get me wrong it's a nice album.... but let's be clear... self titled is beyonce finally being conquered by the industry after her many many years of resistance and sticking to being who she was. It started with I AM. Lemonade was her FIGHT BACK and FU to the industry. Renaissance was her Redemption Arc and Cowboy Carter was her Freedom Song.

And the fact that her ear ripped during this performance and bled and she didn't even flinched!!!
That's incredible, she's amazing

DarkYonce is my FAVORITE 😍

I liked Nathan's reaction when Bey pushes the microphone stand down
