"Endless rooftops from my window." - Neil wrote this song (pre-Rush) while living in England at 17 y/o, I believe. Pretty sure he was drumming in a jazz band at the time. Lyrically, it stands out as one of his best compositions in my opinion. You can truly tell that even at such a young age, he had a way with words. Of course the trio always found a way to craft a musical masterpiece around those words. To the ones who thumb down this video, well, they've no concept of what makes great music great. Sad, really.

I agree whoheartedly! Thanks for splainin the writin motivation. Now I see how the subsequent songs are an expanded version of this great song. I think it is no coincidence Neil met a writing block that never came back right about this time. Geddy took over the writing which is why late Rush is so different than early. Great note. Thanks!

Moderately Amused Rush got a bit more “pop” in the 80’s and maybe in the early 90’s as well, but they did give us Test for Echo in the 1996, which much more of a progressive rock album than anything they’d done in years. And on their ensuing albums (following their five-year hiatus), they got further and further into prog again. But Rush always managed to put out quality material (even during their synth-heavy, pop-flirting 80’s period and their somewhat confused early-90’s period). Unlike the majority of their contemporaries from the 70’s prog and classic rock realms, they were always about making something artistic and interesting, and they never sold out or became a nostalgia act. They were crafting ambitious, creative albums all the way up to the end and always playing a mixture of songs both old and new at their concerts.

From my favorite Rush album, Lee really hits high notes beautifully in this piece. Why not show the album cover instead of the floating brain and hat? It is one of the very best in my opinion.

Geddy's vocals on this are fantastic
The perfect "prog" song... in less than 4 minutes! Perhaps my favorite Rush tune.
What about The Trees.
I mean, usually it’s music, but the visual, “I felt the gloom of empty rooms, on rainy afternoons”’ gives is so powerful I know where that place is.
And The Trees is my No 1 RUSH Tune. Anything from the last 3 of the 70s.
