Never got tired of this song in 9-10 years. That last verse....nothing better to wake me up on the way to school back in the day and now when getting ready for work
This is like just vanilla ice cream. Nothing too fancy. An auditory embodiment of less is more. Sometimes you don't want too much piled on your bowl. ATF, and WP are amazing and have their place still, but this album kicks ass.
+bendog69 I think that may be a joke "because its my time to write lyrical hate" makes more sense although it could be him trolling us with saying it differently sometimes
I gave the Suicide Silence cover a few listens on my Hi-Fi, and while the instrumentals are not bad, and the de-tuning sounds cool, still, although "Adrenaline" is completely in standard tuning, there isn't even a drop D song on the record, "Adrenaline" still manages to sound heavier than the Suicide Silence Cover in My opinion. I understand the cover is a deathcore style so therapping is replaced with screams, but I like the original because it has screams, rapping, and even singing. But remember Chino's rapping is unique, it almost sounds like he is half singing and half rapping, and even screaming at times. So to call Chino's raps just raps is really not doing them justice. It's not like Chino raps in the way Linkin Park's Mike shinoda or Fred Durst raps. If you want to hear what I think is one of Chino's best Rap performances check out the track "Back To School (Mini Maggot)." So I like both the original and the cover, but I prefer the more dynamic original. The cover by Suicide Silence can get a little bit too "Cookie Monster" when the other singer comes in and it doesn't go over well with me. Now remember, I am a pretty hadrcore Deftones Fan, so I am pretty biased. Bonus Fun Facts: (A Little Essay About Rapping In Deftones) This is one of the just one of a small hand picked few Deftones songs that has rapping after they were signed to Madonna's label, Maverick Records. Chino rapped on many of their songs in their early days and on their demo "(Like) Linus", but by the the release of "Adrenaline" only a few songs carried over the younger Deftones rap/singing/scream style. By 1997s "Adrenaline," the band had moved on to singing/screaming only, and was yet still somehow was lumped in the same category of all the other "Nu Metal" bands of the early 2000s, who rapped gratuitously in their song's verses. I think this is what prompted the record label to have Chino rapping on the song "Back To School (Mini Maggot) from the second release of "White Pony". The single was tacked onto later versions of "White Pony (2000)," in an attempt by the record label to boost "White Pony's" appeal to the Limp Bizkit/Kid Rock/Linkin Park/etc. crowd that was exploding unto the scene at the time. Chino has since stated that he really regrets allowing this single to be added to a re-release of the album to appeal to the popular music scene. In the Deftones' eyes, the song is a lame and compromising attempt to sell more copies of what is now regarded as a perfect record from the 2000s. That is why the song is so tongue in cheek angry, and the rapping tells then current bands that they are copy cat acts who need to reinvent themselves, hence the "back to school" metaphor. But I agree with Chino, coming out and rapping about how they invented the genre and have since moved on to better things, and this really didn't need to be said in an MTV friendly rap/rock single. The original release of "White Pony," with or without the added "Back To School (Mini Maggot)" as the opening track, speaks for itself through its ground breaking music. History would've shown this album to be light years ahead of the competition whether they included "Back to School (Mini Maggot)" or not, and the "White Pony" album has stood up over time unlike it's contemporaries.
Around The Fur of 1997 have rap too, with Lhabia, Lotion and Headup. Its a shame that they leave the rap side, White Pony isnt good as their first three albuns.
I don't exactly know what he is saying but I think it is vague for a reason and even the booklet doesn't have them full fledged written. The thing about this band is their lyrics are free form and stream-of-consciousness with abstraction due to the emotion felt in the song whether it be confusion, anger, pain, sadness, that's what great about this band is that they hint what the subject matter may be about, hint at it, or do both yet leave it up to interpretation. I bought my first Deftones CD in 2003 and loved them ever since. It was this one. When I first heard Bored, it changed my music world forever. I played that CD over and over and bought all the others and still dig these guys to this day. I'll always be partial to this record but my favorite would have to be their self-titled if you want a little bit of everything Deftones has ever done from their earlier stuff to now, that album takes the cake, but this is a real close second.
I agree, Self Titled is probably their best album, almost entirely on the strength of the first two tracks. "White Pony" is tied for the number one spot in my opinion. They are just different styles or flavors. One of the reasons that Chino's lyrics are so brilliant is that he has been on record saying that he finds his own life experiences boring, and thus writes lyrics from the perspective of other people, be they real or imagined. So I believe that is a huge aspect of why the lyrics are so powerful and can be interpretated on so many different levels.
john tandberg The second and third person point of view of his lyrics makes sense. He uses a lot of slang, lingo, and broken - up free form improv to his lyrics. Like if you listen to Engine No. 9 you can hear violence and vague situational aspects in the lyrics. Engine No. 9 is almost metaphorical for being angry like a revving Engine (being revved up being angry or even excited). It also seems to happen fast like one couldn't grasp the whole situation in time. At least that's what I make of it. But yeah, Self-Titled, White Pony, and Adrenaline are my top 3.
