I also have a Ram 1500 low top Promaster (self converted camper van) as my daily driver. My wife and I made the decision to purchase a van as a daily driver for the same financial reasons that you did. I definitely would echo all the positives and negatives you listed in your video. My biggest concern has been the mileage I'm putting on the vehicle. I want to make sure that the camper van lasts long enough to go on lots of adventures before it gets on into old age. Kind of like myself. When we first bought our van, we were living in Oregon, and it was really easy to register and insure the vehicle. Oregon treated the Promaster like any other private non-commercial vehicle. 72 bucks for two years. We also found that AAA Insurance doesn't care about the van being a commercial vehicle as long as its not used as one (We also never volunteered information that we were converting it into a camper). When we moved to California earlier this year, we ended up having to register the van as a commercial vehicle and it was a lot more expensive than Oregon. We had to have it weighed and are now required to pay extra each year for registration based on the weight of the van. Overall, we are happy with our decision too. I love the versatility and especially the option to just take a nap or relax in the van whenever I need to.
Interesting about AAA. I'll have to look into that. And yes, my same concern - put too many miles on it too quickly. Luckily when I'm at my home, my work is pretty close and I choose to take my bike when I can to save the van. Happy travels! :)
Just bought a cargo van to convert into a camper and have to get an insurance for it. Could you please share how did you get progressive to insure your camper as private, what conditions? Thank you
Hi Said T. - honestly I just called them up and had them do it. I didn't have them insure the contents of the rig, just the van. But I didn't do anything special - just called them up and got insurance. It may be different in different states though ...
Probably the “daily driver” is the key phrase to use. Since for you you are nit interested to insure the content of the camper, it doesn’t matter. What hoops did you have to go through with the DMV? I’m in california and here cargo vans are considered commercial. Thank you very much
@@saidt.8200 Honestly, I didnt have to jump through any hoops in Colorado or Connecticut. I just went to the DMV with the paperwork and they registered it. Sorry I can't be of more help!
