I have a 2006 CLK 350, bought it 16 months back and I use it for my daily commute. Absolutely in love with it, great car. Bought it with 152,000 km on the odometer and added around 16,000 so far. No issues, just regular lube/brake changes.
I had a 2003 CLK500 for a couple of years. Lovely car had it not been winters. The frameless door windows froze shut regularly, traction was poor due to rear wheel drive and the auxiliary heater failed intermittantly. The lack of traction was the main reason why I traded it away and have driven 4WD only since then.
The clk is a great car and is still looking fresh today, I still get compliments for it from time to time and some even ask about the model since they don't know it.. I have a black clk 220 cdi with sport package from 2008 with 155000km, I try to keep her clean and well maintained.. Until now I just had normal service and tires and she runs like new.. Don't forget the transmission oil change/flush for the automatic gearboxes, very important to do them at least every 60000km or 5 years!
Agreed Dom! It's quite a classic shape and design really, it should continue to age well :) That's a good tip on the auto transmission oil - I've got record of it being done in 2018 I think, so perhaps I'll get it done next year
I had the same car, same model, same colour and loved every year of my 4 years ownership. Despite trying to keep on top of the rust coming through on each wheel arch I decided to trade it in for a 2004 CLK 320 ELEGANCE. Don`t ever let anyone talk you out of a decision once you have made your mind up, it was the best move I could have made. The Grinnability factor when the V6 kicks in is fantastic and even long journeys are a pleasure and are even looked forward to. I am English to my bones, I take my hat off to the Germans, they can certainly build cars.
Cheers Colin. Shame about the rust, but a 320 is a great swap for it. If mine wasn't in such nice condition, I'd think about getting one with a bigger engine. But there's no chance right now I'm getting rid of this 200 :) They certainly can build 'em!
we've had our 21 year old 320 CLK for 18 months, no problems at all. averages 33mpg is quick and comfortable , £350 for service and uk mot. and £ 165 for two tyres. rust starting to show on rear panels but that's it.
I bought my CLK 240 in mid 2020 with 180.000kilometers for 5000 euros. Since then I only did 2 Oil changes + all the filters twice. The engine and the 5speed automatic runs super smooth
My CLK 220 CDI just passed MOT with " Flying Colours , no Advisorys at 234,000 miles I quite chuffed with it lashings of Leather and Walnut. I change my own oil and the filters . Just fit New Pirelli all round and C/w Tracking.
I just bought my CLK in 2007 with 19000 km. I feel great driving on the hyway. My car has at the moment 155000 km. "Every now and than you make me feel so special". Thats what I think and feel about my CLK 220 CDI! It looks like yours, the same aspect.
Love the video, I also have a W209 CLK200, mine is a 2004 car which I bought in 2008 with 8700 miles on it and now it's at just over 54,000. All the minor faults and repairs you describe on your car are familiar to me. These days my CLK is relegated to second car status but I still love owning it and driving it. I completely understand why you like getting back into it even though it's not that quick and even after driving various other interesting cars. I recently ditched the cassette deck and temperamental glovebox CD player and upgraded to wireless Pioneer Apple Car Play and bluetooth etc which is brilliant and makes the car more convenient to use in today's world (no more sticking the phone to the windscreen). I worry about 2 things with regards to ongoing ownership, one is that these 4 cylinder petrol Mercedes can develop timing chain issues I believe which are expensive, and if not caught early, very expensive because it can wreck the engine and the other is that my car has the optional Xenon headlights which can be very expensive to replace I understand. If any other CLK owners have any tips or advice on these two potential issues I'd be very interested in hearing from them. Thanks again for a great video. Interesting that there are still low mileage CLKs out there to buy.
Cheers Gary. Amazing you've had it all this time. I like the idea of a different head unit with car play and whatnot, would definitely bring the car right up to date - but I also quite like the old school look of the original radio. I've just bought a bluetooth module (original one) so I can now do handsfree calls, but still got to use my phone for satnav and music. Not sure on the timing chain issues, but I know that these engines can do a lot of miles, have seen them with 200k+ on them. Making sure the oil is changed regularly I'm sure can't hurt - I'm going with every year which is about 6-7k miles.
Hey JJ thanks for the reply. I think you are right about the regular oil changes. Regarding the look of the audio, mine is an earlier facia design than yours and less attractive than yours so I was less worried about the change in look. The new Pioneer unit installed actually looks quite integrated and as if it was originally factory fit. Not sure it would work so well with your already better looking facia. I am not sure how to post you a picture but if I work out how then I will! Great to read the stories from all the other loyal CLK owners on your channel. Keep the videos coming.
@@garydavis7122 put in oil stopping pigtails onto the outlet of both camshaft adjustors. This prevents engine oil from going into ECU. My mechanics say to change engine oil every 10,000km. The O-rings that comes with new oil filter must be proper installed. The lowest O-ring, below the filter's plastic centering cone, has critical function to prevent engine oil from draining back into the crankcase when the engine is running or turn off. Drive out but not fast after the engine is started. It can take 3 to 5 minutes in cold weather for engine temperature to get to above 70 degree C. You could cut and spread out the old oil filter to look for abnormal quantity shinny metal debris. It's about 5.5 inch x 3 ft long when spread out.
I bought my CLK 350, 2008, in 2018. A little bit earlier than you. It's in my channel. I had problems with the coils, and one of the back window regulator. Those back windows are very difficult to change. Also my transmision was leaking, no big deal, already fix and my intake manifold had a problem, wich I fixed. That was expensive, around 2500 dollars. Runs great and still love it. I have also some other cars, but this one is my favorite
my 2005 w209 clk320 has been great so far, has 150000km on it currently and ive owned it for a year. so far i think i have only spent $300aud on an A service, as well as topped up the oil one time. the m112 is known to be pretty reliable. currently my alternator bearing makes a squeaking noise sometimes so i might have to replace that if it goes, might cost me around $400-500aud. 6 months prior to when i bought it the previous owner had spent 2k on a big service, so it should be good for a while. good to know that your clk has been treating you good too :)
I have a clk convertible 240, not the best engine. But has the full AMG factory fitted body kit and sports suspension. It's had all new brakes, front hubs and all new suspension plus other bits, I love the car. I agree Germans certainly know how to build them right. Thanks JJ keep up the good work.
I commented on your other vid about the things you like about it. I was lucky to spot my 01 CLK 320 the day it went online in 2019 and I jumped on it. It was owned by an older lady who'd had it since new but had barely driven it. I had been looking for several months for this model and to find this with 35k km was very lucky. I have spent $$ on oil leaks, fuel pump, aircon compressor and crank position sensor, and the interior needs some attention, but it drives great and it's such a gorgeous car. Day to day it's reliable and just trundles around my local area. It comes alive on the freeway and that's where it shines. It's a real GT and you have to be careful as it increases speed before you know it and you're going way over the limit. One drawback is it's thirst in the city. Not very economical but you have to accept that and focus on it's beauty, quality and smoothness. It's a classy, elegant ride and you can't say that about too many mainstream cars out there. If you don't need a bigger vehicle and you're prepared to spend money on them now and then the Mercedes CLKs and coupes are hard to beat. Older ones especially can be absolute bargains for what you get. Cheers from Sydney.
Sounds like a lovely car! With it being an '01, is it the previous 'W208' shape? I think those 320s are really reliable engines, but they always have oil leaks! 😂 So it's good you've got them sorted. That's exactly right - smooth, comfortable and stands out from the crowd. Glad you like yours. Cheers Stevie :)
@@JJonCars Yes mate, with the separate round headlights. I wanted that model. I also love the three pointed star ornament on the bonnet. It still leaks a little bit but my mechanic who is also an older Merc owner is keeping an eye on it and says it's ok.
Hello there ,just bought my clk 200 compressor about 2 weeks ago. I hope that i won't have too much of a problem with it. So far i am quite happy with it, it is a nice car indeed. Still i need to discover some things but i'll take it slowly, slowly. Cheers
I'm glad I found this video this morning. Shame on me for not subscribing before! I am about to take my CLK320 to a new, to me, independent mechanic. My favorite mechanic of almost thirty years has retired (how dare he!). This will be interesting as specialist shops in Maine are few and far between. This shop is about 40 miles from where I live and this visit will primarily be for the annual state road inspection, pulling codes and perhaps replacing the crank position sensor as I have lately had a couple of warning signs that the CPS is about to fail. (a bit of stuttering when stopping for a traffic light or to turn a hard corner near the grocery store). This visit to the shop will also establish some other base lines. I'm going to begin a fluid replacement in this car because it's really due according to the previous service records I obtained for the car from Mercedes Benz and Carfax. First of all will be replacement of the valve cover gaskets which are leaking. That will be quite expensive (the Mercedes Benz dealer quoted me $1400!) and I may opt to get them changed at this new shop because it is 100 miles closer to my home. I will tell you that I have sold the other vehicle in the house, my cherished older GMC 4X4 truck. It was getting very rusty and I was told it would not pass state inspection this coming November. The estimate to repair and repaint was like buying it all over again, so I sold it to a young fellow who can do all the repair work himself. Now I must find a suitable replacement vehicle and in this economy that will prove a very difficult task. However I am so pleased with the CLK that I am looking for an E-class station wagon ("Estate" to you!). An 2006-2008 E-class wagon here, with around 100,000 miles will cost around $8-10,000. The truck is to find one that is one or two owner vehicles that has been maintained strictly according to Mercedes instructions and the car must have spent most of its life where there isn't a lot of brine poured on the road for ice control in winter. The one I seek will have the same engine and transmission the CLK has as that is more than adequate, and of course, 4Matic all wheel drive. If I find one, I'll let you know.
Awesome, thanks for subscribing Roger! I've heard the 320 can be a bit leaky, but is otherwise a very solid, reliable engine. We have the salt issue here, a lot of cars that look fine but are rotten underneath. Please do let me know if you find the E-Class. I've just reviewed the coupe version - nice car.
I own a clk320 from 1999 I bought from my father in law 2017, I had for 5 years now I'm 2nd owner and omg it's never given me any problems besides it's regular TLC.. I actually have huge plans for it , LS Swap . I already bought the LS but for my own good I won't swap it till it's engine gives up and it just won't. Best car I ever own
Great that it has been reliable all that time. Like you say, be a shame to swap the engine while it's working so well... but an LS in a CLK would be so good haha!
I am a year into ownership of a CLK 220 AMG sport that I rescued from an uncaring owner. He did at least have it serviced when it was due, but that was about all. New windscreen, pump for the lumbar seats, fixed the glovebox latch. For preventative measures I had the auto box serviced, changed the back axle oil, power steering fluid and coolant. Bought thermostat with housing and sensor, non original part, all I had to do was tap the bolt into the unthreaded hole in the housing that helped secure the engine cover. I serviced it even though it was done 3000 miles earlier and changed all the filters including fuel and cabin filter. Got the anti bacterial filter instead of the Mercedes cloth type. I had all 4 tyres changed and the tracking and geometry set up, spent ages on the interior. I had the Aircon serviced too. It was rewarding work, the car behaved faultlessly on a tour round Scotland on the Highland route and many other trips down south and across the country. it's been a pleasure to own. It's an 07 plate and had 60k on the clock when I bought her, she's now on 83k I made the mistake of adding a tubing box to the car, which I have used before on many of my cars and reaped great benefits from it. At first it was ok, the extra power and torque was great and the mpg was up to over 60 ! I took it off after a few months, as the car would sometimes go into limp home mode, bit I didn't get the check engine light. Switching it off and locking the car and then unlocking the car fixed the problem. I was tempted to install an android head unit, but it was going to be costly to buy extra looms for the steering wheel controls, and I do t think the sound quality would have been as good. I decided just to leave it as it is now. I hope to keep it for a very long time. The only issue that happened was one day the remote would not open the doors, but if I held the key to line up with the infra red sensor as you do to open and close the windows, then it worked. When I started the car it was fine and I noticed the radio was fuzzy. A quick Google search told me the fuse for the alarm had gone, I replaced it but it blew again. This was down to a faulty siren. I put a more powerful fuse in the box and that fixed the problem, it clearly finished off the siren, and when I eventually find it I will get it replaced, but the alarm and immobiliser still works fine, as does the remote and radio, it's just a silent alarm now. I managed to get a brand new key for 150 quid, as I only had one. The guy came out to my house and did the work in an hour. It was a better key then my original as I can now unlock just the driver's door, which I could not with the old one. My only regret is that it's black and shows up all the minor imperfections. With hindsight, and looking at yours, I would definitely buy one the same colour as yours next time. Oh ! One warning. The previous owner had the alloys refurbished and bought new wheel bolts. When I bought the car, the parking brake was rubbish. When I opened the hub up I saw that the parking brake assembly had been mangled by the wheel bolts he had bought. They were too long.
Nice! great comment Dave, thanks for watching. Funny as several of the things you mention ring true - the glovebox latch I had to fiddle around with as it wasn't closing properly. And the remote I once had an issue where it randomly stopped working, but holding it close once or twice seemed to sort it. It sounds like you started with a car that was worth saving - and I'm glad to hear you did save it! All the work you've done should future proof the car for years :) That wheel bolt thing is crazy, though the parking brake is pretty rubbish anyway I think, nearly every CLK will have had people drive off with the handbrake on many times (I know, I've done it myself plenty)
@@JJonCars The parking brake is a bit of a let down, having fully overhauled it with new assemblies the parking brake is vastly improved, and the shoes no longer rub, but I really have to press it down quite a way to get it to hold the car on my driveway, which has a steep slope in the first half. I don't like having the gearbox do all the work, as getting it out of park makes it give off a big cluncking sound because the weight of the car is on the parking pawl of the gearbox. But at least it's now usable, and I can use it at the traffic lights and normal parking places etc. I generally drive about in sport mode, so as to keep first gear well oiled, so that can sometimes cause the car to creep forward on a slope if you haven't applied a bit more pressure than usual. In comfort mode it's fine, as second gear doesn't have as much pull when stationary. Sport mode behaves the same as comfort when driving with a light foot, and where I live it's better for the car as it's quite hilly and rural. I find that as I take off in certain places in comfort mode and second gear, the car will downshift after a second or so, but I use comfort mode on long trips and in town.
I have a 2007 CLK 550 that I bought back in 2019. The car had 42,000 miles on it and I paid $8,000us. I love the car and when I am done with it I will look for another.
Bought a 2009 CLK 550 a couple of years ago and frankly, I haven't dared floor the accelerator pedal. The acceleration of this chariot is truly fearsome, but best of all, the suspension is old-school shocks and springs, which is a rarity in any V8 Mercedes currently. I plan to own this car until the cows come home. But for a little discoloration on the headlight lenses, you'd never guess that this car is 13 years old.
@@JJonCars hey I have a question would you recommend buying a CLK Mercedes Benz 2003/ 05 the car only can go 55mph is it worth buying still to to drive in still fix I was told only because a sensor that why it can go over 55 miles per hour
that's because you don't have an AMG, but you are right, the clk 550 or 500 is one of the only mercs from that era that have such a powerful engine with and old school reliable suspension, it's almost like a C class W203, imagine a C500 w203, well that CLK is almost that, and the reason why i write like this, i had a w202 C180 class and i kinda regret it afer getting a CLK 200K c209, it was such a versatile car
I have a clk 350 amg sport, love the thing nice to be a bit different from the 3 series around better car I personally think! Mines done nearly 160k now and still looks amazing and goes really well you would never know it had done the mileage
Nice car - the 350 to me seems like one of the best options for the CLK - big V6 with decent power. I like the AMGs and the 500, but somehow for the size of the car, the 350 seems right.
The auto gearchange on this car is almost unoticable. I've never driven anything like it, I'll never sell my CLK 200. Thanks for highlighting this wonderful piece of engineering JJ
@@JJonCars They certainly are, and the build quality is superb. A 2003 like mine in excellent condition with 70K on the clock is only worth about £2K, a lot of car for the money.
@@JJonCars i was in the right place at the right time, mine was owned by the ex mother in law, and I only paid £600 , Haha ! She's a daily drive, and every day I feel as if I'm Lord Of The Manor, a beautiful smooth and quality motoring experience.
I've got a clk 220 CDI 2005 diesel that I've selling. Current mileage:145k. Needs a bit of work...a full service but it still drives nicely. Black leather seats, heated front seats, parking sensors. I've put it up for £1200.
My CLK has had some issues. For one, i managed to break the handbrake by using too long lug bolts when i changed the tires. (we use 2 sets, summer and winter) Needs new summer tires, but shouldn't be too expensive. It also needs a new combo stalk because the blinker doesn't stay up or down most of the time. Needs a new windshield because one of the previous owners used duct tape to fix the passenger side wiper blade in place, and it has scratched up the glass. Windshield washer only sprays from the driver side nozzle, and only after pressing the button multiple times. Passenger side door lock has the bouncing issue, only locks randomly. Thankfully i can fix most of these with help from a friend. Inside trim has some imperfections, driver side rear window switch is broken, and a tab from the center console. Apart from those it has been very reliable so far, though i've only had it for 2 months. I'm planning to do a couple of mods: bi-xenon headlights, maybe LED taillights, and a new radio.
How many kms/miles does your CLK have? (and what engine?) Like you say, they are not too serious issues so you can get them done and you'll have a nice sorted CLK :) I get the feeling that the combo stalk is a common problem as I'm sure I've seen other people who need to replace it.
@@JJonCars It just crossed 205k kilometers, and it has the 2.6L V6. My biggest concern right now is the shake at motorway speeds, noticed it when i visited my grandparents. Need to get it fixed or it'll be a pain to visit friends this summer.
3 years ago bought a black clk 220 with 62000 on it for £2k. It's in lovely condition. Bigges expense was dashboard repair as stopped working. Great car
I really like the way the wheels match your car. I have the AMG wheels as standard and I think after seeing yours I prefer them to mine. I'm quite lucky regarding the tyres, as my mate will do them at cost price for me, so I can get the 255 40 18 tyres on the front for about 100 quid a piece and the 285 35 18 tyres on the rear for 120 a piece. Comfort isn't too bad, but the wheels do suffer from pot hole damage easily. He got me the vented / grooved disks and the pads for a shade under 200 quid. Regarding your gearbox leak, I'm glad I did have my gearbox serviced when I bought it and realised the car was a keeper, as they told me it had a slight leak on the sump. The sump and filter was replaced as part of the service, the old oil wasn't too bad, slightly tanned in colour and it didn't have that burnt acrid smell. The cost was 200 for the service. The car had about 65 k on the clock by then. It was more a precautionary measure, as the car was 14 years old back then and having 14 year old oil in the box didn't seem like a good idea to me, being the AMG spec it still has the 5 speed gearbox which Mercedes say is sealed for life, unlike the 7 speed box introduced that year which is now recommended to have the oil changed at about 40 to 60k
I do like the wheels on mine, only thing is, they're harder to clean and the lower profile makes the ride quiet hard. I've watched enough High Peak Autos to know it's always worth servicing the automatic gearbox :) I've got history of mine being done in 2018 so lots of years left. 'Sealed for life' doesn't make sense does it!
@@JJonCars Sealed for life I assume is going to mean about 60 to 100k, by which time the car is well out of warranty and probably on its second or even 3rd owner. My friend worked in the petro chemical industry and we had conversations about oil molecular chains breaking down. So for me it made sense to change all the oils. Diff oil and power steering oil was not cheap, but at least I know it's done now. I did notice a slight difference in the gearbox after the service, but I had reset it too using the old ignition key and throttle peddle sequence trick. SAAB gearboxes were also sealed for life, back in the day of the older non electronic gearboxes. It was not recommended to change the oil in those (The old Dexron 3 type oil) as it had very aggressive cleaning properties and could break down the dirt compacted in the seals and cause them to fail. So it was a gearbox out job and replace all the seals and torque converter seals. I had a lot of SAAB'S before switching to Mercedes with a brief and painful affair with a Jaguar XF-S In between. I did want to buy an SLK but my wife said No ! The CLK coupe turned out to be the better move in retrospect . So I have to give her that one. 😂
@@davefrance3721 Yeah, that's exactly it - 'sealed for as-long-as-Merc-have-to-stay-involved' Interesting about the Saab gearboxes. I do like a Saab, I had a 9-3 V6, though it was a manual. Nice car, but the GM derived engine was what failed the car in the end.
My dad bought a CLK500 about 6 months ago. What a beast. I cant decide weather I go for a a 2014 C250 Coupe for for the same price when i can get a low milage CLK320.
Interesting dilemma. Personally, I'd go for the CLK, and my reasons are: It's a more unusual car. It's got a little bit more of an understated elegance about it It hand you your seatbelt, and it has frameless windows (man I love these things) The 320 will have a nice V6 sound to it But... the 2014 C250 is of course a better and more modern car, and your friends will think you have more money. But is it all about that? :D
@@JJonCars Very true. I do love the framless windows and the v6. However I'm struggling to find one low milage in good condition (as i do a fair amount of miles). The c250 is similar bhp but only a 4pot! There us positives and negatives to both engines i think. Plus im worried as the CLK is an older car it may cost me more in the long run when it comes to reliability. Thankyou for your input and vidoes they are very helpfull :)
I'm considering if I should get one which is about 155,000miles already. Don't know if it is still reliable. The seller said no issue with it at this time. What do you think. I intend to be travelling with it to work and back like 500miles weekly
To be quite honest, in this scenario, I'd say probably not. They can be reliable at this mileage, but if you're doing 500 miles a week I think I'd rather recommend something newer and lower mileage!
My car for the last 4 years, with 270cdi engine and manual transmision, and i absolutely love that! i have average consumption around 5 liters per 100, its strangely good :-D Pulls like bull, going cheep, looking great. Only one negative is my black color, its clean maybe 10 minutes after washing, and this car is like magnet for idiots, so iam like scratching coletor. But in general.....i love this car. Hallo from czech republic!
Manual! quite rare, I can barely imagine a CLK with a manual gearbox, must feel like a different car. That is excellent fuel economy, I bet the manual gearbox is helping with that. For hiding dirt and scratches, silver is the best! But they do look nice in black when they are clean and shiny. Cheers Adam, hello from England :)
@@JJonCars i was lucky to found that in Austria, first owner, car was in authorised service from bought till 2018, 155000 kilometers. Manual made by mercedes is kind of soft feel, no precision like mazda etc in the traveling of gear shifter, but in general.....its a great car with a really minimum problems. Practicaly zero oil consumption. Few noices somewhere from front windows in higher speed, but it seems to be normal....as my mechanic sayz. I wish to collect money to change my car in to the white color 😄
Prices are, in my view reasonable. Many other males aren’t that far away from what you’ve paid. Plus, for the luxury, pleasure and joy from it, it’s worth it.
That's not bad really for a 5.0 V8! I think on the equivalent trip driving sedately, I might get 38ish, and best I ever achieved (don't know how) is 42.
I’ve had mine almost 3 years now and all I’ve really spent on mine is the servicing and a set of Pirelli P Zero tyres. Although I have spent considerably more for fuel for mine as she is a V6. 🙈
Broken coil springs should be suspected in almost any used MB .Motor mounts myseriouly remain a cronic issue. These are cars with 110,000 miles or less. I'm looking ata a low mileage CLK 320 Wednesday..76,000 miles.$3500.
I have CLK 270 CDI AMG from 2003, automatic, for 6 years now. Back than I bought it for 5900€, and I can sell it now for the same money. All the youngsters in city are asking when I will be selling it. When I bought, it had 170 000km, now is 245 000km. Two times changed tires, 255 and 225 and that is the main expense...1200€ total. Changed brakes, oil, filters, engine and transmission mounts... total maintenance for all this time is around 500€. In city 10 liters/100km, open road 6-7 liters....add 1.5 liters to what board computer says. You know when smart asses say..."You must change this and that". Well, I am car mechanics professor, dont touch anything if it works properly. I will keep this car, pass it to another generations in family. No stupid sensors, electronics....just engine, music, leather seats....and drive how you like, race or cruise...car is the boss. Looks way better than new cars.
Only €500 in all that time on maintenance, that's really good! You've got the same tyres as me, so I know the pain, quite costly, and you cant swap them round to even the wear out. Absolutely - great car for cruising around, but fun to drive too. It's great to hear from owners who are looking after their CLKs, cheers!
Ah wow they're that much? I need to get them refurbished on mine, previous owner had curbed them a bit. I love the look of them too, but they're harder to keep clean and the low profile means a harder ride.
@@JJonCars yes man. Those rims aren't AMG rims but regardless they're somewhat rare. You mostly see them on more expensive Mercs like the CL500 from the mid 2000s or the E500. Definitely keep them clean and shining, it's not often that you see a clk with those rims. I have standard 16 inch rims. I do have it more comfortable tho but idk i prefer the looks im not old haha. I need me some amg styling 2 rims, but they're just like yours: expensive as fuck lol
They are original wheels you got with the sports brakes and suspension so I don't know what they're called. The size of the tyres are 255/35/18 on the back and 225/40/18 on the front :)
Depends on what you want from your first car! These cars are not especially cheap to run compared to a little 1 litre hatchback, but my god you will enjoy it more :) You'll pay more for fuel, insurance, tax etc. What mileage will you be doing, where are you based?
Hey JJ, I'm looking at CLK's of this generation with a V6 and I'm wondering whether these engines are reliable (even though you have the 1.8K)... Also, should I go for the 5 speed or 7 speed?
Hi Martin - you're in luck, apparently the petrol V6 engines are the most reliable (especially the 320, which has a few oil leaks but is 'bullet proof'). And the 5 speed is supposed to be more reliable than the 7. So go for a 5 speed 320 and you should have the most reliable CLK. But service history and condition is, as always, very important :)
Hey JJ, I'm writing from Australia. Looking at buying a CLK200 Kompressor coupe. 2007 build year with 99,000 kms on the clock. What are your thoughts on the CLK in terms of reliability, cost to run etc? Cheers, Iain
Hi Iain. This video tells you all about the reliability and cost to run :) I have also done another video on the one thing that has gone wrong with the car so far. But in short, it has been a reliable car, but of course there are servicing and tyres, brakes etc that have been replaced. It's not as cheap to run as a little hatchback but I've been really pleased with the running costs. And the fuel economy isn't so bad, at least compared to the V6 models. Let me know if you go for it!
It's a good job you had the windows closed whilst passing those sheep, could you imagine whilst passing them and a sheep lost it's footing and slid down that slope - straight through your open pillarless windows into your car? How to explain that to the police!
I test drove a CLK 280 manual with the sports package recently, which I was about to buy. The CLK is my dream car, but the car felt so heavy and the steering so unresponsive. I assumed the CLK was a cruiser, but not that much. I love the car's styling and its features, but it did not feel right to buy it when it seems like it is no fun on curvy roads :/ Also, the manual gearbox is below average. The CLK might be best with an automatic transmission, I guess.
Interesting, Dennis. I personally quite like the steering on the CLK - you're right that it doesn't feel like a sports car, and it is quite heavy. But I enjoy driving it through the sweeping A roads we have around here. It's pretty good as a cruiser, though the sports suspension I do find quite firm. I've heard that the manual gearboxes are to avoid - almost all of them come with automatics (which suit them really well).
@@JJonCars Thanks for your reply! I am not sure if I really want a CLK after my test drive. I am not into automatic transmissions, altough I can see the relaxed experience the car could offer. I read the CLK 63 offers better handling, but costs much more in every regard, obviously. Probably it still won't be a handling like a sports car either.
Hi JJ, can you direct me to somewhere that I can buy a replacement set of hydraulic hoses that operate the auto opening boot from the motor, I think the Mere part number is 455? Getting a set from Marc is $$$$$
Hi Richard - I am not clued up on all the parts numbers! Best checking with a facebook group or forum, there are some knowledgable people on there. That's what I'd do anyway :)
had the car for past 12 months ,im fed up of the amount of different services that pop up A,B,C ,very espensive car to maintain ,and the parts are hard to come by as well ,getting rid soon
I like the sound system in mine! Compared to the system in the 2019 Vauxhall Astra I had before, it's much better. I use a bluetooth radio transmitter gadget and it works great. There seems to be plenty of speakers dotted around the car.
took the car to the shop. The dealer pulled codes and checked all values. Reset reset computer. They could not duplicate the stumble and all values were correct I was told to drive the car. It's history, they said, showed that it had spent a lot of sitting and they wanted me to just drive the car normally. The problem has not reappeared. Winter Wheels: $430.00 Ordered from a shop in Germany and TUV approved: Wheel lugs: 80.00 OEM Mercedes-Benz lug nuts for steel wheels. Special MB packaging! Winter tires: $376.00 Mastercraft Glacier Trex: real winter tires with three peak/snowflake emblem Aggressive tread yet surprisingly quiet inside the car. Battery/charging system check $ 35.00 Battery replaced: (by owner) $ 160.23 Michelin Primacy rear tires: $ 180.00 The CLK came with Michelin Primacy HP tires that were just a bit less than two years old (from the service records). At the end of the first summer season it was clear the rear tires were no longer usable although the front tires had one more season. Four tires replaced: April, 2020 $ 396.00 The "new" rear tires were nearly worn to the wear bars after one season. The front tires were worn to the wear bars after two seasons. For the last 10,000 the Michelins were objectionably loud. Rapid wear and high noise level makes them undesirable for this class of vehicle. Total of all costs over 25 months and 20,334 miles: +$13,000. Total SERVICE and MAINTENANCE costs: $993.11 The CLK was last in the shop for the oil change in November, 2021 at 33142 miles. I expect to put around 8,000 miles annually on the CLK.
Thanks for your detailed costs Roger! Very low miles, like mine - so yeah it's not surprising to have some strange faults. The rear brakes were very corroded on mine, I think from it sitting for periods of time. $1000 on servicing and maintenance is not bad at all. You're right, these cars have to have quiet tyres - they're a really relaxing cruiser, and road noise would ruin that!
I would certainly consider a C250 (or some version of the C-Class coupe). But I'd really like to get the E-Class coupe on and see how that is, as it is supposed to be the successor to the CLK and has the frameless windows and seatbelt butler. But I think the C class probably drives better/is more fun.
Hey! Love the vids! 2 questions too. What do you use to archive all your costs and keep track of all that, would really like to do the same. And also what do you think, is it a really smooth drive? I also have the sport suspension and usually get annoyed at the stiff ride and shaking on our bad roads. Thinking of changing maybe the shocks or springs or just taller tyres..
Thanks! :) I would recommend Fuelio app (android or apple) to log fuel and all costs - fuel.io/ But I also just keep a good old spreadsheet too! Well - you're right, it is quite a firm ride. So it can be a bit jarring over potholes, with the sports suspension and 18" wheels. But - the car is quiet, it's refined, the seats are comfortable, the auto gearbox is smooth and on the motorway and smoother roads it is a reasonable ride too. First thing I'd say is, if you really don't like the ride and you have 18" wheels is try different wheels, maybe 16 or 17", as that can make quite the difference. But you've got to make sure that the new wheels clear the sports brake callipers and are the right fitment for your car :)
I have one of these a 2008 CLK 200 really like these cars but I have a niggling problem, sometimes when I go to start the car I turn the key and nothing happens. All the lights come on as normal but nothing from the engine, this can happen for a couple of times then the it starts as normal, I have had in for diagnostics a couple of times but nothing shows up, very puzzling. Anybody have any suggestions?
That's weird. I guess only thing that I can think off the top of my head is, is the battery OK? I'm guessing it is if it's been in for diagnostics. Otherwise, hopefully someone else will know...
@@JJonCars thanks, just remembered I asked this question before, it is a strange one, my car is going perfectly at the moment but like I said tomorrow it might happen again ah well fingers crossed.
Does it sometimes stall while the engine is running idle? I've had that same ignition problem from time to time and couldn't figure it out until now, seems my Engine Control Module is faulty. The EMC is ceirtainly causing the stalling and unstable RPM at idle occasionaly, however I'm thinking it may be causing the ignition fails as well. Just an idea to check out really, I've ordered a new EMC a few days ago and will see if it fixes the ignition problems as well. :)
Couple weeks ago bought a 2003 CLK 500 Avantgarde, my old car that I still have is a mondeo st200, my insurance went down but my fuel usage has gone up a tad
I own a CLK 320 CDI V6. Had a dpf delete and remap to 290bhp 635nm torque. Love it to bits. Next is Coilovers and Respray on wheel arches and machine polish detail.
IN the USA, some work would cost 10K from the dealer in Santa Monica. They charge 300 / hr for labor. A CLK is a poor choice in the USA because of the high cost of labor and parts Santa Monica. Benz dealer.
Wow! To be fair, dealer prices in the UK are very expensive too. But there are enough specialist garages around that know what they are doing, so you can get the work done to a high standard with them, and it costs a lot less. And some work can be carried out by any independent garage - e.g. the coil spring I had done at my trusted local mechanic :)
I've had to replace lots of front suspension arms and various plastic parts that went brittle even though car has only 89k miles. Had an X-Type that did 180k and never had to change anything on suspension or brittle plastic. The Mercs aren't what they used to be. Nice cars but not made any better than most other brands.
Yeah, they do seem to eat through suspension components for sure. I do like an X-Type, underrated, but the interiors were not as well put together as the Mercs
I have a 220 CDI 2007 model with 135000 miles now .Hard to find a car at a decent price to replace it with .All modern stuff has to much electronics and to complicated This is the first Auto car I have ever owned and would be hard to back to a manual now ,the auto gearbox is so good
@@JJonCarsI was looking for CLK here in Moscow, the best you can buy for 8000$ would be with over 200.000km, with bunch of issues (engine chains as a common) and after a few body repairs. Car like yours would start from $17-18k. So feels a little envy 😁😁 Very nice car anyway, congrats and good luck with her!
I have a 2006 CLK 350, bought it 16 months back and I use it for my daily commute. Absolutely in love with it, great car. Bought it with 152,000 km on the odometer and added around 16,000 so far. No issues, just regular lube/brake changes.
How much you spend on fuel?
Agreed Dom! It's quite a classic shape and design really, it should continue to age well :) That's a good tip on the auto transmission oil - I've got record of it being done in 2018 I think, so perhaps I'll get it done next year
Hello from a 2007 same-color CLK280 Avantgarde with-145,000-km owner in Taiwan! Like your appreciation and descriptions of designs in various cars.
Hello! Nice to hear from someone in Taiwan! Thank you very much for saying so, and glad you enjoy your CLK too. All the best from the UK
@@johnohara9357 33mpg is great for a 320. Slightly better than what I get in my 200K 😅
the 320 engine is superb, i think the v6 takes the clk in to a higher class of car
I bought my CLK 240 in mid 2020 with 180.000kilometers for 5000 euros. Since then I only did 2 Oil changes + all the filters twice. The engine and the 5speed automatic runs super smooth
My CLK 220 CDI just passed MOT with " Flying Colours , no Advisorys at 234,000 miles
I quite chuffed with it lashings of Leather and Walnut.
I change my own oil and the filters .
Just fit New Pirelli all round and C/w Tracking.
Nice one John. Not seen that many CLKs with huge mileage, so it's nice to see they can do it. Lashings :) Perfect word for that!
I just bought my CLK in 2007 with 19000 km. I feel great driving on the hyway. My car has at the moment 155000 km. "Every now and than you make me feel so special". Thats what I think and feel about my CLK 220 CDI! It looks like yours, the same aspect.
If it's still making you feel special 15 years later, then you've truly got the right car for you! That's really great. Cheers
André!
I have a clk 1.8 kompresor year 2003 and its fantastici have 8 year that i have bought and i have no intention to sell it....love that curved lines
I have heard that the 320 engine is reliable too :) Nice that you've not had to spend much - 🤞 for lots more trouble free kms/miles! Cheers!
I have a clk convertible 240, not the best engine. But has the full AMG factory fitted body kit and sports suspension. It's had all new brakes, front hubs and all new suspension plus other bits, I love the car. I agree Germans certainly know how to build them right. Thanks JJ keep up the good work.
I'd like to compare the 240 with the 200K - similar power on paper, but imagine it's delivered differently and feels different. Cheers John 😊
Loved the video and your cost breakdown, great job Jack! Very reasonable running costs indeed for that type of car 👍😁
Cheers Matt!! ❤️
A lovely car, my neighbour has a 2008 one since new and still going strong 💪
That's ace, to have one from new in 2008. I can only dream of trying to keep a car that long!
Cheers
Nice one. There are lots of things to discover, quirks and features of the car. I am still learning things now, 2.5 years later. Enjoy!
This was just a nice and calm video. Thanks mate. I have a CLK500 here down under
Cheers Tobias! Wouldn't mind a 500 myself!
It's an 07 plate and had 60k on the clock when I bought her, she's now on 83k
I made the mistake of adding a tubing box to the car, which I have used before on many of my cars and reaped great benefits from it.
I love the car and when I am done with it I will look for another.
bought 2 weeks ago clk 240 elegance 2003. absolutely loving it.
Sweet, glad you like it Marko!
Very nice car - last of the CLKs and with a glorious engine. Good point about the suspension, none of those complicated problems! Enjoy!

Thank you! That's awesome, sounds like a very nice low mileage example you have bought. Enjoy the car! 😊
You're welcome Bob! They're a smooth car aren't they
@@JJonCars They certainly are, and the build quality is superb. A 2003 like mine in excellent condition with 70K on the clock is only worth about £2K, a lot of car for the money.
@@bobupen6476 That's a bargain Bob!

I've got a clk 220 CDI 2005 diesel that I've selling. Current mileage:145k.
Needs a bit of work...a full service but it still drives nicely. Black leather seats, heated front seats, parking sensors.
I've put it up for £1200.
Seems a good price. Good luck with the sale
My CLK has had some issues.
For one, i managed to break the handbrake by using too long lug bolts when i changed the tires. (we use 2 sets, summer and winter)
Needs new summer tires, but shouldn't be too expensive.
(and what engine?)
Like you say, they are not too serious issues so you can get them done and you'll have a nice sorted CLK :) I get the feeling that the combo stalk is a common problem as I'm sure I've seen other people who need to replace it.
Great car
Nice one Nigel. I had a similar issue with the instrument cluster
@@JJonCars Oh must be common then. I found a firm that repaired for £150 with lifetime guarrantee. Hoping to keep for a long time.
Regarding your gearbox leak,
I'm glad I did have my gearbox serviced when I bought it and realised the car was a keeper, as they told me it had a slight leak on the sump.
I had a lot of SAAB'S before switching to Mercedes with a brief and painful affair with a Jaguar XF-S
In between.
I did want to buy an SLK but my wife said No ! The CLK coupe turned out to be the better move in retrospect .
So I have to give her that one. 😂
@@davefrance3721 Yeah, that's exactly it - 'sealed for as-long-as-Merc-have-to-stay-involved'
Interesting about the Saab gearboxes. I do like a Saab, I had a 9-3 V6, though it was a manual. Nice car, but the GM derived engine was what failed the car in the end.
Looking forward to meeting you and getting my vw bora tdi St on your channel 😀.
Nice motor JJ. A lot of car for the money, I'd say.
Cheers John! Very pleased with it thus far.
My dad bought a CLK500 about 6 months ago. What a beast. I cant decide weather I go for a a 2014 C250 Coupe for for the same price when i can get a low milage CLK320.
Interesting dilemma. Personally, I'd go for the CLK, and my reasons are:
It's a more unusual car.
It's got a little bit more of an understated elegance about it
It hand you your seatbelt, and it has frameless windows (man I love these things)
The 320 will have a nice V6 sound to it
But... the 2014 C250 is of course a better and more modern car, and your friends will think you have more money.
Ok thank you so much. What if I get something around 112000miles.....what do you think please.
Practicaly zero oil consumption. Few noices somewhere from front windows in higher speed, but it seems to be normal....as my mechanic sayz. Absolutely agreed Stuart :)
Managed to get 32 mpg on a trip from Norfolk to Nottingham! A very sedate trip and on the way back got bored and it soon went down to 24😂 500 though
That's not bad really for a 5.0 V8! I think on the equivalent trip driving sedately, I might get 38ish, and best I ever achieved (don't know how) is 42.
Beautiful looking car
I’ve had mine almost 3 years now and all I’ve really spent on mine is the servicing and a set of Pirelli P Zero tyres. Although I have spent considerably more for fuel for mine as she is a V6. 🙈
Nice, thats very reliable. Which V6 is it? I'm always happy to hear when people put 'proper' tyres on their car :)
Broken coil springs should be suspected in almost any used MB .Motor mounts myseriouly remain a cronic issue. These are cars with 110,000 miles or less. I'm looking ata a low mileage CLK 320 Wednesday..76,000 miles.$3500.
Did you like the car? Gonna buy it? :)
Such a classy car!
I have the same ! Another color. I love It !!

Mate I'd wish mine had the same rims as yours. They look gorgeous. Unfortunately original Mercedes rims like those cost around 2000 euros lol
I'm thinking of getting one too. The car looks better with the rims you have. What are these rims called? And what tire sizes are you using?
They are original wheels you got with the sports brakes and suspension so I don't know what they're called. The size of the tyres are 255/35/18 on the back and 225/40/18 on the front :)
Looking to get this as first car, bit high on insurance but manageable, any other recommendations for a first car ?
@@JJonCars Thankyou, I just had a look at a CLK at the dealership to see what they're all about, and was actually quite impressed!

How do you play music from your phone in this car?
I've got one of those Bluetooth radio receiver things. Not perfect but it does the job mostly
It's a good job you had the windows closed whilst passing those sheep, could you imagine whilst passing them and a sheep lost it's footing and slid down that slope - straight through your open pillarless windows into your car? How to explain that to the police!
Hahaha!
But it might actually be preferable to having the sheep smash the windows... they seem pretty complicated to replace 😄
Probably it still won't be a handling like a sports car either.

them undesirable for this class of vehicle.
Total of all costs over 25 months and 20,334 miles: +$13,000.
Total SERVICE and MAINTENANCE costs: $993.11
The CLK was last in the shop for the oil change in November, 2021 at 33142 miles.
Lovely car! Would you ever change to the c250 you reviewed?
Thanks! :) I would recommend Fuelio app (android or apple) to log fuel and all costs - fuel.io/
But I also just keep a good old spreadsheet too!
@@JJonCars Thank you! Will check the app and I agree with the ride quality. Will need to figure out the best option for a softer ride🙏
