    This was brilliant, Liron - and it illustrated so well one of the most important things in drawing & painting (for me, at least) and that is the ability to detach oneself from all knowledge of what the subject is and instead to view the subject simply as a collection of almost abstract shapes. The better we become at judging the 'shapes' of these shapes, their tonal values and their placement on the paper, the better will be our recreation of the original image. It's something I've found hard to do and I still have an instinctive tendency to 'see a tree' and then try to 'paint a tree' - whereas what I should be doing is seeing triangles and squares and circles of light and shade - much as you displayed so well in this video. It was a great lesson and (you'll be pleased to hear) entertaining too! Many thanks for this latest in your long line of contributions to our community. Best wishes, Brian.

    Hi Liron, I really appreciate finding your video. I have been drawing Michaelangelo and Raphael nudes and finding it very difficult to figure out how to paint a follow up watercolor of the beautiful figures. But when I drew and painted from Michaelangelo's "Brutus" sculpture, I found my way to something productive. Your video teaches me why, because you are able to capture the planes!! I love your use of color. This is an excellent teaching video, thank you very much! Heatherose

    I like your portrait of Peter Jordanson 😉..., and your videos in general! You work very hard to improve your art and despite that you make it look effortless. You are a great inspiration and motivation to fellow artists. Thank you.

    Great exercise, mine is really off but I learned a lot. Exercises like this are less intimidating than attempting a full painting, and for me, a great way to learn. Thanks much!

    • @LironYan

      Yes! These exercises help isolating the “problems” and tackle them efficiently 😊 A full landscape can be very overwhelming! I am still overwhelmed by them on a regular basis 😂

    Thank you for this quick lesson. I loved how you connected the shadows all across the statue’s face. Excellent exercise. And I do not feel you messed up at all. This is practice both for you and your viewers. Hard for all of us not to think we MUST create a masterpiece EVERY time we sit down to paint. Watercolours challenge THAt notion and sit back and laugh at us when we grumble, but what fun they are to play with. Have a great day!

    Such as great exercise. Thank you Liron. For me it has quite challenging to merge the shapes on the neck as the paper dries up fast.
    I also got some trouble doing the lower lip and the nose because I added to much contrast in these areas. Thank you. Love this kind of tutorial.

    super tutorial! I liked the watercolor part a little better than the drawing - maybe you could explain more about color temperature and light/shadow (ie. how to chose temperature), do you consider reflected light etc. Love your videos

      Generally I tried using more orange near the left-facing areas (facing the light), and more violet / green for the right facing areas.
      Near the neck I decided in the moment to cool it down with the green - but it was actually luck, I didn't plan to do that in advance (;

    I almost didn't watch this as I'm not interested in portraits - however I was hopeful that I'd learn some great tips and in the end I did find this video very helpful... All the while as I was watching you I was wondering how I could apply what you were showing us to an urban scene or a landscape... Yes, I too have extreme difficulty in remembering where to locate my shadows once I've started painting. I've tried doing a Notan but I'm not quite sure I 'get' how they work despite watching many videos and reading about them, I still find it difficult to apply the concepts of my notan to my paintings simply because they only have 2 values and yet I love the idea and the simply of the notan... go figure...
