What's amazing about this is that it's not even a good-faith pitch. This is around 1967, and by then the Sea was smelling bad on occasional days - it was all going south. People knew it and were already starting to quietly leave. And yet some outfit made this film to hustle investors.
How great that someone found this old film advertisement. California forgot to do the one thing in order to keep the Salton Sea alive; “just add water.” 💦
We need to get Elon's Boring Company to bore a tunnel from the Pacific Ocean to a point a little lower than sea level, then a canal the rest of the way to the Salton Sea which is 225 feet below sea level.
If you wish to comment do NOT politicize the Salton Sea blaming Democrats or Republicans for the lake's decay. This comment section is NOT a tool express your political beliefs. Thank You!
Incredible. Such compelling advertising copy. But the Salton Sea vision ended up as a total failure as water quality steadily declined with increased salinity and fertilizer runoff from surrounding areas.
The problem is that it is an endorheic basin, and the ONLY water it ever received/receives was/is from agriculture runoff. What needs to be done to the Salton Sea is a partition dam with a spill way. One side would become a salt lake, growing fresher over time, fed by ag runoff as always. The other side would become a Salt sump, perhaps the salt could be put to use by industry. Half a lake and half a sump is better than all sump and no lake, which is where it is going now. www.fdungan.com/salton.jpg
What irony! Every word of it. It's the biggest open sewer in North America. The money that was lost when this area self-destructed. Anyone who says you can't lose when you buy land has to study the history of the Salton Sea!
Dude, it didn’t self-destruct. Water is more valuable than gold. People with money wanted the water more than Imperial County. Without water ya ain’t got shit!
I would argue it wasn't all that hard to predict. It was formed by 2 anomilies. The rare flood from the Colorado River in combination with the engineering mistake engineers made on it's west banks. Also, right now, is over 50 years later. Nothing stays the same and things do change in life. I could be wrong, but from what I've learned, the Colorado River does occasionally flood (about every 25 years, or so) as far down as the Salton Sea area. You never know, something of that nature could occur in the relatively near future, that would once again make the Salton Sea a desirable place to be again.
2:52 - Wonder if Desi Arnaz took his mistresses here..."Lucy!!!, I'm not home!" 8:02 - 'Dad' is lookin' to get in on the action. BTW, quite skimpy bathing suits...guess if you 'come as you are'.
OMG, I went to Sea View School back in 1967. I was in the 1st grade. That pic is totally from my era. Lol. So much for the vision...
Your family made history! Watching this video makes me feel sad knowing that those who invested in the vision probably ended up taking huge losses.
What s happen in this city?
I wish someone would make a "then" and "now" video showing the buildings, houses, etc that are in this video.

Now, not a pretty sight.
A tantalising vision of a future that was never to be. I bet it was a blast for the few years that it lasted though.

What a nightmare this has turned out to be. Very creepy..

Ironic that the name is “Salt”on City... the salt became a real issue.

Not much money was lost. It was never heavily invested in to begin with.

It's sad really. Quite a salesmans pitch in the film though.

Its nowhere near palm springs 🤔
You can still see it in the far Eastern Los Angeles.
We all know that the Sea’s Cities are abandoned, Sea’s rotten smell and the Sea is shrinking.
Seemed like a good idea..hahahahahaha....
