I got this game for a hair over thirty bucks after tripling up on discounts at Barnes and noble. I knew people were not giving this game great reviews, however, after playing this, I think it is a total success for what it is. The rules are easy to learn and even easier to teach. The turns are fast, there is just enough variety to be interesting and not utterly overwhelm new players. Where this game succeeds is being an outstanding entry for new players to be introduced to deeper board games. Inject this with anything more and it risks overwhelming people new to board games. I also love there is plenty of room in the box to stack in some deck boxes to organize the components. I’d give this a 9 too.
Thanks for the review. I think this game is going to be great. The time commitment is really reasonable for a civ building game. But like you said at the end of your review this doesn't replace the other FFG Civ game. If anything it would be a lead in to the more complex game. Being such a recognized name as a PC game many people are going to come to this game with different expectations. Its great to have online reviews for these games to help manage those expectations. Dice Tower Network and Man vs Meeple are great sources for reviews. Keep up the good work
Most reviews don't highlight this but the trade token system really makes this game light up. It effortlessly connects most systems of the game together & allows a lot of tactical options in the game.
Picked this up for the holidays as a long time Civ video game player. I feel they captured the essence of the franchise very well. Played inaugural game with my 10 year old nephew and he picked it up easily and almost beat me lol. Excellent product.
Thanks for the review....I think I wait till they bring out some expansions which improve warfare, diplomacy etc. It is great to have a civ game which is less complex but do not like that key things are so streamlined that basically there ssems to be just "one way" to win plus that it got some nice mechanics but seem to lack excitement and thrill in gameplay.. That is at least what I got out of looking at your review and the one the Dice Tower posted yesterday. Have to say I feel a bit disappointed. However I see the good sides of it too and still have not given up hope that it will develop over time. (with Expansions) or otherwise I will find an "easier" approachable differentiated Civ game without loosing whole game parts / winning conditions / fun to play. Was a bit surprised that in the end that you gave it such a high rating with all your reluctance but I see your point. that presently it is one of the most approachable Civ board games. Nevertheless how do you compare it to other Civ style games like Through the ages, the old Civ or Nations in more detail? That would be intersting to know. Which would you recommend for Civ PC Game Fans who would like to start to play a similar boardgame?
PS. You should invest your money at your next steam sale on Civ 6. I sadly do not get round to play it as much as I want but it is definately recommendable.
Agreed, love being able to play Civ6 on the iPad now that it is available there but also looking forward to trying out New Dawn esp since the artwork is similar!
