    Hey Charles, your son is producing easy watching content and it is producing all the right endorphins.
    As for your advice, it's been the backbone of my 18month exploration of no dig market garden. I have never owned a gardening tool in my life, but now I construct my own little designs with what I can find lying about here in the southern point of Africa.
    Once again, respect from Africa 🇿🇦

    5 steps:
    1. Make a hole just the size around that you need.
    2. make the hole a bit deeper than the transplant you are planting.
    3. Push the root ball in firmly.
    4. Do not pack soil around the new plantings (Leave the holes unfilled).
    5. Water in directly after planting.

    • @yairvsync
      @yairvsync ปีที่แล้ว

      He doesn't explain why he pushes them firmly. it's left as a mystery

    • @rubygray7749
      @rubygray7749 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@yairvsync
      Yes he does.
      Charles explains that he pushes seedlings in firmly so they make good root contact with the soil, and establish quickly.
      It also helps with taller plants, to prevent them being rocked about by wind. Brassicas especially need a firm base as they are so top heavy.

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I started with 2 tomato plants in pots on my apartment balcony. Extended to a few more pots with green beans. Fell in love with the outcome. I was proud I could produce that small amount of vegetables on my balcony. Started looking for a house with garden to plant more vegetables. Moved, started small, struggled to get it right, discovered you videos, inspirational. Amazing how easy it becomes to have and eat sufficient vegetables once you learn to cultivate them. Healthy it is. This year for first the time I was successful with growing cucumbers. The season is ending for them. I don't feel like wanting the supermarket cucumbers anymore. My bio/organic shop is my garden. I recommend it everyone. In the meantime I have seen fantastic small vegetable gardens of just a few m2 with abundant vegetables. You wonder why do we buy salads in supermarkets if you can have much more with just 1 or 2 m2? Started this year with planting fall vegetables. Even more healthy food to come. Did not buy any vegetables since May. Don't do it for money, do it for your mental and physical health. This is as environmental friendly as you can be. My vegetable garden must be now 50m2. Still learning to increase the harvest, do rotation planting. More fun to come. Thank you for showing the way.

    fabulous good timing for me. Its springtime here and I have seedlings coming away in the little greenhouse. I noticed how my purple sprouting broccoli are spindly, and felt a bit better to hear you say that's a tendency they have. I've never thought to leave the planting hole open for watering. So now I will. Thanks again for your advice - why o why didnt I find your channel years ago, rather than breaking my back with double digging and confusing crop rotations.

    I passed 150kg off my 3.3x11.6m plot (plus 8x6 greenhouse) yesterday. I'm absolutely convinced it's changing to No Dig & following your advice which has achieved this.
    By the end of the year, I'm confident I'll be close to 200kg, as there are still leeks, brussels sprouts, celery, beetroot & carrots to be harvested, never mind the late boost of cucumbers & chilli peppers in the greenhouse (Sungold tomatoes about finished - maybe 2kg to come on top of the 12kg so far from 6 plants).
    Heaven only knows how well I'll do on year 3 of No Dig, as I've over 1m³ of compost ready now & as much again should be ready to spread by March (plus lots of shredded woody material for the paths).

    Also, try starting your plants in something that really lets the roots breathe, like little fabric "pots." (I make my own out of scrap material, but you can buy nice ones that will last longer, too.)
    Air-pruning works. In my experience transplants started that way take off noticeably faster, with little or no "transplant shock," compared to plants that were in plastic or paperboard containers, even if they didn't seem at all root-bound.
    When starting in fabric, you just have to be REAL careful about not letting the soil and little seedlings dry out.

    Thanks for the detailed instructions on planting the starts. I wonder if here in Florida where it is humid with downpours very often, that the little holes left open may drown the seedlings or cook them due to our location. I certainly will give it a try.

    Hello from New Zealand ☺️ i love you channel Charles i have learnt so much. And am building my first no dig garden this year (since we are spring) i am getting ready to plant my first crops. I am curious though i don’t think i have heard you mention anything about ‘hardening off’ seedlings before planting them. Is this something you do? Or a bit of an unnecessary step?

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Isobel, and that's not a coincidence. I believe in no hardening off and partly that is because in spring we immediately cover new plantings, taken straight from the greenhouse, with fleece. By late spring we don't need to use the fleece and I'm still taking new plants straight from the greenhouse, it saves a lot of time and effort.

  • @Chris-op7yt

    you're needing to plant so deep because of the compost on top, which is hard to keep moist without over watering.
    i find the biggest help for me in transplanting was using the right cell tray and commercial grade media. cell trays that have a pronounced taper are so much easier to get transplants out. i struggled with my previous cell tray. bark based seed raising mixes have not only terrible seed sprouting success rate but, also readily disintegrate during transplanting, reducing transplant success rate. i use a very fine peat and perlite mix that holds together very well.
    do your dibbers have spacing markings? would seem helpful. 20, 30 and 50cm color coded markings would be easiest to use, without having to read numbers.

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No the depth is to give stability and all the reasons I explain.

    Will you do a video on how to prep a garden for winter after they’ve harvested all their crop? I’m curious about once I’ve pulled the plants, is there anything I should do to the soil (compost, etc) or should I wait until spring and also do you cover with a tarp to help with weeds over winter? Thanks!!

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel like I have done that a lot already, and it's very simple. Just put compost on beds and a little woodchip on paths. We may show it, need just two minutes! No covers.

    Hi Charles, thank you for uploading this video! A few doubts:
    When I transplant I end it with a pull test, and when plants just come out very easily, I repeat and tuck them in more firmly, so I tend to try to close the hole. Is this pulling out test a good measure for a well succeded transplant or not at all?
    This technique of water-filling the hole, does it work with sandy soils too?

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The pull test is for bare root transplants, and risks breaking roots in module cells. Just push in the module rootballs.
      And yes water similarly on sandy soil.

    Hi Charles, I've been making a lot of medium sized boxes for growing my herbs in for this Spring/Summer. I've been using a cheap potting mix but am not happy with the results.. Would you reccomend growing in purely compost or a proper potting mix of 50/50 soil/compost? Thanks heaps

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @joshlovegood9392 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CharlesDowding1nodig Thanks for that Charles! So just to confirm, you'd be happy planting a tomato plant in 100% pure compost?? Or prefer compost mixed with "potting mix" .. Sorry for the silly questions but really appreciate the response! Seems the gardening language used in AUS is a bit different.
