    We are Heather, Bradey, Alexa and Chloe. We purchased an abandoned stone barn in the foothills of the Italian Alps and we are working together as a family to renovate and restore this old stone barn into our dream home.

      OMG! I thought after all the work you´ve made in the foundations etc, you were almost ready to start turning the "barn" into a house, but with this new project everything changes. I think , besides de water problem, it will help you have a better floor plan, and more light. I will sure follow this new adventure! 💪

      Since you asked, I think it is totally exciting for your family! The plan seems necessary to make the place livable and probably a more healthful environment. From experience, I know it is “major” to have found a construction company to work with.
      The island looks like a wonderful place to visit. The tourist best kept secret is out now!

    Massive energy and training in this small family…they share so much of their learning experiences as well as hardships. They weather their setbacks well. The children have learning curves in every direction possible. It’s great that they can come and go so as not to “homestead like glue” and expand the children’s horizons.

    Will you put in skylights for light in the new addition? I have a grotto that is 15 to 18 feet into the mountain. I have been surprised at how dry is has remained, but it is dark. Your extension sounds amazing, but as you know, it is Italy. and that is going to take a lot of time. I wish you the best of luck on it all. You all needed a break from all the work you do every day. Good to get away and return with a whole new energy. Enjoy your time off.

    We had to do this too behind our house, we had the mountain right behind. My husband had an engineer design it, so my husband had to build a very big footer and then a large wall. I suggest you do it right and not just put a wall behind but a proper retaining wall. My point is don’t just hired a contractor without plan! Lots of work but worth it!

    I have a sump pump french drain system. It's great for my situation, where the region has flooded 3 times in the last 30 years. It turns on frequently in April when we get alot of rain and the water table rises, but we are only actually in danger of having water on our basement floor when the watertable is high enough that the news is reporting that towns around us are evacuating due to rising water. But yes with your situation of constant water concerns, it would be a bandaid, very helpful but not a cure. and the pumps are very loud, we have 3 of them and we can hear which one is going off no matter where we are in the house and the one in the basement below our bedroom shakes the bed when it's running. Your solution to this problem, sounds scary but so worth it! Best wishes.

    I am totally amazed that you purchased the property with the aim of turning the structure into a home, knowing about the water issue. Good luck

  • @ImpyChan
    @ImpyChan 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    That is indeed a massive addition to the stone house, and it's neat that it will be invisible from the outside. If I'm reading that plan right, you're adding several approximately 4 meter by 3 meter spaces out the back, which means your addition is probably about the same size as our whole apartment here in Seoul! It definitely expands the option to entertain.
    I assume you'll be doing your water redirection around the addition at the back so you don't just swap the water infiltration problem to a new set of rooms, but if you're covering the roof of the new space with dirt and grass, doesn't that pose some leak risk as well? Is there a plan to manage that which just doesn't show up on the floorplan because it's overhead? Will the stone walls of the original house still be thick enough to maintain their structure once they're no longer being supported by the mountain?
    Overall it's a very exciting development, and I look forward to seeing what you do with all that stone! You're basically building a mini quarry for this.

      Have to think about type of material , stability even under heavy precipitation. You could inherently cause it to become unstable if it's not done right then you become a hazard to anything below and your home ends up looking like those sub divisions on coastal Cali..

    Extending the house back after excavation, puts the new part in the same situation-against the mountain. How does that solve the moisture or water problem ? 🤷‍♀️

  • @sherrieshatzen3801
    @sherrieshatzen3801 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I love your plans for expanding the house. I was concerned not only about the amount of space but also by the necessity of going outside to go from one space to another in the current structure. Did anyone in the "building codes" dept forewarn you about the moisture issue or did it just become obvious over time? Also I spent time on the Isla de las Mujeres when I went to Tulum. I hope you have either been to Tulum or will go on a future trip. The ruins are with experiencing. Also Chichinitza is not too much farther. I loved the island. I spent some time at the turtle facility where they have many different tanks with turtles in various stages of development. I loved the island. Not so much the local boat back to Cancun. If ever there was a time to use a rosary, that was it. Perhaps that is what it takes to keep the island from being completely over run with tourists.

      From the plans, it looks fully enclosed, it just has two doorways/short halls that open into the original building. That means they can get into every room of the house (including the office/studio room at the end) without going outside.
      The new build will have a green roof-type setup with earth and grass over the top so you won't see it from the outside; it will be an outdoor living space that is level with the second story.
      Hope this helps! 🙂

    Nature is unpredictable and that house being in a zone where not only flooding but earthquakes can happen make me think and see your situation differently. Things happen for a reason. First the issue with the visa and now the water etc. I think probably that property should be left alone. There are other places where you could build your dream home. It’s just my opinion I hope I don’t hurt anyone’s feelings for saying this.

    By the way, this is their dream and project. We are lucky they share it with us arm chair observers. If you don’t like if anymore, go somewhere else. Better yet, you move to another country and make your own project and let us watch and criticize your dream. If they want our suggestions, or our votes, they will ask us. Right now they consult with experts, not us, the arm chair critics, 😆.

      Hold on now, in the intro paragraph they clearly say:" so what do you think?" I wonder what that could mean, hmm.

    Baby turtles use their initial energy swimming out to the seaweed patches. If they’re spending that energy going the wrong way, they’ll not make it to the seaweed. This one at least has a chance now.

    Surely, some watch your videos and think, “Wow! I have found my tribe!” Others may not feel the same and it is disappointing to read those posts. Your family is adventurous, fun, hard working, a cohesive team, raising children aligned with your values, and sharing your journey and live experiences along the way. I look forward to your weekly updates and pray for your family in between. I had never heard of Isla Mujeres, it sounds like a beautiful place to visit.

    I watched the video. Then (unfortunately) read the comments. Watched a second time, and, for the life of me, cannot understand why this beautiful, warm family video brought out all the nasties.

    Hey Gang 👋, I don't comment much but, your home was a retreat for the farmers taking care of their OLIV GROVE 50-60 years ago, seeing the layout of the land, (not a resident's), I'm an Arechitectural Engineer and the Italian government building codes, that they're asking for, is actually destroying HISTORICAL SITES.
    It's like adding bathrooms at the COLOSSEUM
    God's Good Blessings to you and your beautiful family keep up the great work love U guys XOXOXO stay safe and healthy
