    Jon, you have gone back and forth on this issue several times. A few years ago, you complained how labels ripped you off. And you turned down major label deals recently because the cut was too big. On the right hand bar, you have a video from 3 months ago: "Why I'm switching all of my music to DistroKid". And one from 5 months ago: "I rejected bigger labels". My head is spinning. I would say write your own music and lyrics, release your own music, do your own promotion, and keep all of the royalties. Or you can sign a distribution deal for major releases. Also, it is a big mistake to put all of your effort into Spotify alone. Spotify has changed and you cannot make a lot of $$$ there anymore. Take the time. Build your brand. Reap the rewards.

      This video was just about presenting the pros and cons. My advice at the end to first try and go for a label was aimed for all beginners and their first releases. I’m in another position I got my own label and got most promotional stuff established so a label has to offer a lot more to convince me and most don’t. So the two other videos are the decisions for me personally and this one my advice for everyone else especially beginners.

    Currently self-releasing, the promotion can definitely be a struggle because you need the right contacts and it can be super time consuming. On the other hand I think that it is a big pro that you are fully in control of what you want to release and how you do it, it gives you a lot of freedom also creative wise😄👌🏻

    These days before a label signs you they will look at your social media following to see how many fans you have and also what other releases you may already have. They are looking for numbers before they sign you. Back in the day an A&R would go to gigs to find local talent and then approach you if they could see you had an audience and good songs. Most of the effort now is done by the artist. If a big label does sign you expect to do alot of the leg work yourself. It's good if the label can invest money into your promotion and get your songs heard by many but make sure you know what your signing first. I've personally had a song reach over 200k streams on spotify by just investing $300. Another idea is to be consistent, release yourself, invest your returns and make good music

    Would you be open to teaching the business side of music "eg. how to label" (or recommending people who do)? A masterclass or a course relating to what needs to be done to be successful in marketing music is something I'd pay money for and I might not be the only one. Even for people who don't end up releasing on their own, I'd venture it would be valuable to get a deep understanding on how it's done, even if it's just to end up in a better bargaining position / relationship with labels themselves. If you know what work needs to be done and how, fewer chances to end up screwed in the end.

    9:30 That's the reason why nearly every (big) artist/DJ/who else has his own label - because you don't need any factory for records/CDs, it's more or less (big) administrative work. You could already see controversy band vs. label in the movie Bohemian Rhapsody when the guys wanted to release the song and the label said no, nobody will listen it ....
    When I will be artist, I would try to release by myself because knocking on label's door can be more frustrating then no any play on Spotify.

    out of inexperience i made a foolish mistake, which was that i self-released a track and also sent the track to a label (i didn't know you had to pick one or the other, i thought you could self-release *and* send it to labels as well). the label ended up accepting the song, but then when i told them i had self-released it (only days ago!), they said they couldn't release it because it had already been released. so don't make the same mistake, make sure you don't self-release your music if you are hoping to get it released by labels! i really wish someone had explained this to me earlier!!

    • @CCP-pb5ss
      @CCP-pb5ss 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      ummm couldnt you just cancel that self-release..take it down..re-release it on the label that claims they wanted it..sounds sus..like creed-push up released on ravealert..but it went viral..so sony/b1 came to buy it..& they did..& basically released it as a joint ravealert/sony project..same w/ dynoro - in my mind..self-released bootleg..bought by sony..official re-release..if its hot..what label is gonna turn it away..because it was already self-released thus no one even heard it yet anyway

    • @exist0142
      @exist0142 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CCP-pb5ss Maybe that was possible but I didn't negotiate further, just thanked them for their time and chalked up the mistake. Looking back, the message I got from them was this: "Unfortunately if the track is already released we cannot release it again, we only release tracks that have not been released before on any other labels or elsewhere." Anyway that was years ago, before I understood what releasing was about, haha. I would never submit an already self-released track to a label for release consideration, as that would be kind of pointless.

      bert doorn not true. You can either not reply like they do or tell them they are too late that you pick another label and that you’ll send more music later. If you pick one label at a time and it’ll take months to find a label that will release it. My best bet is just not to reply if you already pick the label you’ll want. Odds are they wont even remember you once you send music again. That’s what I’ve been doing and I’m on my 5th release on proper labels

      I wouldn't waste my time on small labels that don't do shit. I've had my experience with one and if it's a small label that doesn't spend any time into promo behind ur song then don't sign with them, you're better off either waiting for the big labels to reply or self release. Keep in mind it can take several weeks for them to reply as well. My suggestion would be to send your song to dozens of labels and see where it goes, just be smart with who you sign with.

      It depends on what you mean by sayin "songs ready".
      You should choose labels you would like to work with. Listen what music labels release and think if your songs fit their production. Of course there are bigger labels which releases different types of music and there are almost personal labels. Note, in most cases you can't contact directly big labels such as Atlantic, Columbia, Interscope. So, I would say, choose maximum 6-7 labels. One or two "big" labels from music center, then two-three local labels near you and then two-three very small labels, running by one or two persons. Latter basically search for talents and they can listen to your songs more carefully. Keep in mind if your songs are really good and has potential those could be stolen. So be sure you have published your songs somewhere prior that (soundcloud, bandcamp) and those songs has 20-30 views (just ask your friends to supply listens or fake by himself).
