In this video, we dive into the disconnect between motocross and pop culture, exploring what’s holding the sport back and how we can bridge the gap. Riley Hawk shares his perspective on the shift that happened in skateboarding, from major cultural changes to the influence of brands like Supreme, that allowed it to make an impact on pop culture.
If you’re into motocross, skateboarding, or how action sports intersect with culture, you’ll want to check this out!

Anyone can afford a skateboard.
And ride it almost anywhere.
the majority of working Americans can afford a good used dirt bike.
@@mxrx3659 not really the same... I wish 2ts where still competitive. Really priced out a ton of people.
@@mxrx3659 Define the dollars amount and year of bikes. 5k for a 10 year old bike is buying a roach.
Carrie Coombs-Russell needs to go. MXSports needs a new CEO. No more diversity hires.
I have to drive an hour just to ride my expensive bike.
Move😮
We used to have 106 tracks over in Belgium now we only have 3. Lommel, Lierneux and Genk. Genk and Lierneux are more of a beginners track with hard ground and Lommel is ofcourse the MXGP track. But when it's not MXGP it's prepped with almost no jumps and if there are jumps they are very small. We have a lot of talent here but the government just doesn't care. Honestly I wish I could come to the USA as there are still many tracks there. European regulations are insane.
We got commines sangatte conde but its so close to belgium but its not belgium i am a belgium rider to if you want some nice tracks you have to travel 😢
@@YSCHER it may seem like we have a lot of tracks but in reality there are not. US is big and unless you are in a few key areas you dont have access unless you have your own land. And even then you can have issues with noise complaints. I grew up near dc and there were a few tracks within 3hrs in maryland. Wv. What you find is to live in a place with good jobs and pay enough to afford to ride you have to travel a good bit. If you live in areas closer to a track (in most places) they tend to be more rural areas where the cost of living is lower but also income. Bikes are priced the same if you make 30k a year or 300k a year...
I'll never understand "grow up the sport"
One of the things that I thought was sick about moto is that hardly anybody did it.
You want fans, you need to widen the participant base. Show me a sport with a narrow participation base and you're showing me a sport with a small fan base. A dirt bike and gear is over 10K and I have to transport it to place to ride. Its a bit complicated and scary to figure out and on and on for barriers to participation. Participants turn into fans who occasionally turn others into fans. There is a golden opportunity with electric dirt bikes to raise the participation numbers. Because of the reduced noise they can be ridden in way more places. They are also significantly less complicated to learn to ride. Not sure how to pull all of this together but we need more people riding to grow the professional side.
Good point
Moto tracks are closing due to insurance problems caused by sloppy track management. The noise is just one of many reasons. If it isnt the noise, it'll be the dust, if its not that it'll be some rare local river frog at risk from bikes. Property now means $$$. If a developer has their eye on a track you can kiss it goodbye. Its a worldwide problem.
Formula 1 says hello
F1 has a massive participant base. Everyone i know over the age of 15 drives a car and in my experience most of them drive aggressively at least occasionally.
How many oF1 fans do you know that own an F1 car?? Put it in perspective
Silly comparison; Moto is for people with money. Skateboarding there's so much less expensive.
free places to ride... all you old 70-90s guys remember where we used to ride!
Don't waste time trying to get bigger. All you are going to do then is what has happened to F1 and you get non fans interested. Forget getting new fans and look at the fans you have that are loyal to the sport.
thats the point dumb dumb, Moto need the casual fan base
Moto is its own culture
It’s too gnarly for it to be relatable to enough ppl to get big.
They need to have better interviews done so they play it during the race . Just quick lil clips and that puts faces to the riders . Then u combine go pro footage with traditional camera angles to add more excitement to the viewing experience. Imagine being able to see as if your Tomac chasing Jett for the pass . That’s how u bring up the excitement. Helmets didn’t slow football down because of all the coverage outside the actual game they add to the game .
Comparing moto to skateboarding? Really?
"You can look cool, and that's like, enough. You don't have to be the best guy". That's the difference between the sport itself and the "lifestyle" perception. Some people ride their Ducati at the race track, others ride theirs to Starbucks.
Moto was the biggest in the early 2000s when they marketed it with personality’s like metal mulisha and riders could be themselves. Kids that didn’t even ride wanted to rock the shirts, even remember how big no fear clothing was and fox clothing at that time. Now moto has been so polished and clean cut and the riders can’t have their own personalities anymore it’s taken a lot away from it and taken the general public interest out of it in my opinion. Also it’s just not accessible for the average person anymore to race, it’s so expensive and out of reach. A local race day you’re talking 250-500 dollars between gate fee, parking fee, class sign up, your fuel, the travel just to ride for 2 15 minute motos
It was even bigger in the 1970s, the bikes were affordable, and you could ride anywhere, and it was way less extreme because the bikes weren't as fast and refined
Your way off bro,,,, had zero fucks todo with metal dork mulisha guys that were intermission show at best for racer's, why it peaked was RICKY CARMICHAEL VS JAMES STEWART,
@ not even close, only people that cared about James vs Ricky were racers or people already into the sport. We are talking about drawing in non riders and new fans and the whole scene and the mulisha thing did way more of that. No one outside of racing gave a damn about 2 greats battling the same way I don’t care about 2 racecar drivers battling because I’m not into it. Deegan and his shtick had kids all over all about it
100%
who exactly is saying that MX can't , won;t or has not "grown"?
That is a ridiculous claim. The sport is bigger than ever before , in revenue, tickets, attendance, viewership, merchandise, and general acceptability.
And we have seen the effects of personalities in the sport. Roczen in a suit and tie, Anderson with Team Fried,
All the privateer social media exposure, I mean really, look at the Deegan phenomenon. I think your question is invalid and the answer is nonsense.Modern MX and SX is in it's infancy , with a clear ascendence . Just let it grow.Stop complaining
Who??? Lol
Free style has done a lot for moto cross .
The sport is almost elite, the cost of riding is extortionate. Make it more accessible you open it right up. That’s just basics
@5:09 no helmet on until the 2-minute board goes up.
Jas is seriously tripping on this whole topic of why moto isn't more popular.
It's a a stupid question to ask why isn't Moto more popular.
The show host has too much time on his hands.
A motorcycle costs 30 times what a skateboard does... It's just access. You can go for a skate any time any place. MX you have to go to a track and deal with a bunch of flat brim cap types... Which is the reason I ride in the bush more..
Flat brim cap type😂 I know exactly what you mean
Ya want to know whats gonna ruin the sport? The Lawrence's doing what they're doing as far as Deegan racing in Australia its a bloody disgrace & embarrassment and they should be ashamed, Actual Aussie athletes wouldn't even consider doing this and alot of Aussie fans now think they're a joke
I feel once the rider's fire their bike's up, no one talks to them until quick interviews after finish riding. Locally on trails you don't get too talk to mates riding with you asmuch as if you were out skateboarding with mates, 3rd is alot of people don't like dirtbikes rippin around having fun in hills or beaches and trails. Avagud1 2bangas rule
Moto cant grow because of access. Cost is high but also tracks. You can do adventure stuff. Trail stuff. But motox tracks are few and far between. Where i live there is tons of mtb. Several skate parks and one that is skate only, no bikes. But to ride moto i gotta drive 2+ hrs. So 10 to 15k invested. 5hrs of driving in a day plus track fees vs a $2000 mtb and free trails 5mins away....
Also on the filming side i remember curb dogs from the 80s. Mtv had sk8 tv. You have had loads of skaters like rob d. Sheckler etc who have had shows. My young daughter wanted a skateboard one year and for $30 you can get a cheap setup from target. There just is a much higher barrier to entry to moto and in most cases it happens based on location and your parents. Rarely do you get kids riding whose parents dont or didnt. One of my kids asked me for a dirtbike but im hesitant because i know the logictics vs taking him on his bike to the dirt jumps or skate park.
Clear helmets would be possibly be sick. Obviously you would have to have padding but it might be an interesting look
Get some more crack cocaine
Moto isn’t easy to get into for a lot of people, it takes, money, family on board depending on your age, and places to ride,
MX is kool but it costs way more than a skateboard and if you don’t live next to a track or trails then you might need truck or trailer
Jas forgets that most people are lazy. The amount of maintenance required to participate in riding or racing a dirt bike is massive.
Hardly anyone is going to make a dirt bike riding / racing.
The truth is that the whole "let's grow the sport" utopia is a fallacy, and no one will hate their utopia more than the Moto community if they get it. Skateboarding is currently in a mess, and a lot of the core companies are going out of business. Don't use skating as a model for Moto; it's broken. Skate companies dream about being in a stadium-level situation. Jett is the only person since McGrath who has the ability, looks, and charisma to pull the sport up another step, but it's up to him to want to do the extra work, talk shows, fashion shows, charity work, etc., all the things a good publicist will tell you to do. The season is so long that I don't see how there is room for that, especially if he is involved in a tight championship. Lewis Hamilton is the highest-profile motorsport name in history. He has spent almost 20 years winning with a carefully crafted PR strategy to achieve that. F1 is nearly all non-endemic sponsorship. What is good for the moto community clearly doesn't attract non-endemic sponsorship.
If you’re looking to be mainstream pick another sport. Motocross is like living in the country. It’s not for everyone.
i dont think it has to do with the helmet, well not the biggest reason, look at F1. its huge! we need a "drive to survive" or "full swing" type thing... like lets be real if you're a new fan, you do not know any of these guys other than their social medias or if they a top 3 rider and on the podium often enough. a netflix thing like drive to survive would bring so many more fans and will turn so many of the casual fans into super fans.
It’s real simple… motorcycles aren’t relatable to the majority of the population.
As a sport itself.. SX/MX is bigger than skate or bmx
What happens when you don't properly maintain your four-stroke motor? Manny Riders are ending up like Brandon Hartranft severely injured because is there 4 stroke motors weren't properly maintained and they cut out while jumping mid-air. Ask Jo Shimoda who has a factory bike what it's like having the 4-stroke motor cutout mid-air and ending up in the hospital.
Engine failures, both by the nature of the mechanical, and / or improperly maintenanced motors will cause hundreds of riders to become severely injured because their motors cut out mid-air.
Riding a 4-stroke sometimes is like a Kamikaze mission... If you're lucky your motor won't cut out mid-air.
Hardly anyone understand this or talks about it.
If the dark secret of the Moto industry.
Terrible
👏👏👏👏👏👏
it’s the fact moto is way more dangerous then skateboarding. 98% parents do not want son or daughter on a motorcycle. you have no where but a track to ride or the woods. And everyone can’t go buy two bikes just to go ride. it’s the fact motorcycles are dangerous and parents don’t want little Johnny or Lucy on a street or dirt bike.
💯
BMX probably covers all the bases. Urban...race...freeride or freestyle.
Still not as big as skate since the early 80s.
My .02 on why Moto won't grow:
-Lack of personality in riders...In the 90s Moto was more culturally significant...riders styles were impacting mainstream culture
-4 Stroke soundtrack isn't as appealing as 2 strokes were...4 bangers sound sort of hollow and cheap especially how they are ridden off the rev limiter constantly...I think its analogous to how F1 fans yearn for the exhaust notes of yesteryear, I think 2 strokes sounded cool and alluring and 4 strokes sound lifeless and boring...they just don't get the blood boiling like a smoker
-Entry cost...once again, 2 strokes were affordable to purchase and maintain and nowadays the 4 bangers cost as much as a used Lexus and are equally costly to maintain
I think Moto has MASS potential, I think it could be very culturally relevant but is being steered in the wrong direction..I think it has huge potential in the 8-30yo market specifically the college market...If Moto started marketing through channels like Barstool it could really become iconic for early 20s rebellious circles
All your points are irrelevant because 99.9% can afford a bike and the expenses to participate
I couldn’t give a fuck about other riders and their personalities I want to see them race and the best win idc about what they think or what their style or opinions are they’re irrelevant and do nothing for the cost of entry and participation of the sport which is the other main factor of what I care about. Some spoiled rich fuck who was bred to race is the last thing I want to hear about vs how much a bike is and where the closest track is so I can practice and ride.
@@akatgif tell me you grew up spoiled by momma and dadda without telling me
@@akatgif LOL oh man!! I just watched your videos on your page and it's easy to understand why you have such a sour attitude....im sorry you had to exist my brother it seems painful
I think deegan has done that, but he's been in people's faces for 15 years now, and speaking his mind which this country is so thin skinned these days, the mind virus that's infested the minds of the people needs to be broken and I think deegs is doing alot of that in the short time he's gone pro, but they brought so many people over to motocross, I know they did that for me and im 54 but I was raised riding and motocross wasn't in the scene when I was going up, but it's better today then it has been
Sounds a little like the devil's handy work to bring more into the evil that destroys the people, but you have to have the successful to get the crowds to follow, your kids is going on this grunge deal and stops doing thier homework, there is that aspect that with music, and many outlets that we all see our kids start on there down slope, its always done by like Eminem back in the day of music with the i hate you and it wasn't good for the young, and we wonder why the ghetto is still around, because being an outsider, bad boy has been romanticized, being the drug and you know all the different ways of going to the bad side of human nature, when we use to push the hero and today the hero is the drunk and womanizer etc
From a fan base let’s hear what the riders say during the race example Wilson getting taken out or trying to pass Friese but it would require a person with a quick mute button for live tv
most of the racers have a belief that theyre the epitome of athletic evolution. its tough when you dont prove it on the court. there tailored to like babys and the freedom doesnt really exist past the paternal structure.
Skating requires low investment, financially, emotionally, mentally - moto is the total opposite.
Well said. Completely agree
To start out, yeah sure. But at the pro level, skateboarding competition is pretty heavy. So the mental/ emotion side I'd have to disagree with, at the high level. With that said nobody is crosstraining with cardio and gym etc. Some guys probably do a little something but nowhere near what's required for moto. It just doesn't work like that. Its not an endurance sport. Idk, apples and oranges.
Yeah right 🤣 maybe financially.
Nope skateboard teaches getting up after falling and repetition leading to muscle memory way more than moto. You crash so much more skateboarding.definately cheaper and more access to skateparks than riding spots.
Bro keep us disconnected please we ride motorcycles even if someone had the bike dosent mean they would have balls to ride it skating is a poor boy sport
