Mordecai was referring to the funeral home that was supplying the alcohol, though he does have a connection to Ivy - he worked at the Lackadaisy speakeasy under Atlas May, Mitzi's late husband and Ivy's godfather, and left after he was killed in 1926. Atlas's death is also what led to the speakeasy struggling as it is now.
Here's a relevant distinction to know between types of alcohols: hard liquors/spirits are *distilled* which increases their alcohol content by volume, compared to beer and wine which are _not_ distilled. (There are also fortified or "dessert" wines which are wine with distilled spirits added in, partly as a natural preservative) When the 18th Amendment in the US was ratified, people assumed it would target hard liquors specifically, but the subsequent Volstead Act set a threshold of 0.5% ABV encompassing basically all forms of alcoholic beverages (a threshold which would be raised to about 3% shortly before the 21st Amendment repealed it outright).
