Guillow's Lancer Radio Control Build and Fly

  • I built this rubber band powered Guillow's kit as a boy. Now many decades later I built it again, this time equipped with an electric motor and 3 channel radio control. Flight begins at 3:35. Parts list:
    Kit: Guillow's Lancer kit 604
    Receiver: WLToys F949
    Transmitter: Flysky FS-i6
    Motor: 820 motor gearbox propeller
    Battery: 3.7V 260mAh 35C
    Covering: 1.5 mil standard document laminating film.

      You're right, it flew tail heavy under power and nose heavy when gliding. I fixed it by increasing the wingspan. Check this out: th-cam.com/video/6IhG15PWNtc/w-d-xo.html

      It'll do figure-8's in my backyard. Great for small areas or indoor venues.

    Die crushed for the slowest build possible. How much of it did you end up replacing? I ended tossing the die cut stuff as unusable and scratch built from the plans for mine. I switched up to a symmetric airfoil for horizontal stabilizer and picked up some speed and a better glide.

      This was a trip down memory lane so I used what I got. One balsa sheet was laser cut, the rest die-crushed (wtf). I glue as many notches in place with CA before they come out and notch them by hand. I would rather cut balsa by hand than build either die-crushed or laser scorched. I built a flat horizontal stab first then changed my mind and used the lifting airfoil stab. Recently I added 6" to the wingspan.       Thanks! The hinges are made from Tyvek mail envelope. Free from USPS.

      @@computerillustration Tyvek is a non-woven synthetic cloth. It makes a flexible but very strong hinge. Another great option for light hinges is monofilament fishing line. The rudder hinge on the Lancer is clear packing tape. You should check out the build log for all the details of the build. It's linked in the video description above.     I am building this and I can't seem to find the height angles for the wing frame on the instruction sheet. The tip of the wings and then the centre. Can you tell me what heights you used please?

      Hi Vivian, Find section B, "Building the Wing Frame" in the Plan and Instruction Sheet. There are actual size examples of the balsa strips used to prop up the wing sections. Tips are 1 5/8" and center section is 1 7/16". I used TLAR measurements (That Looks About Right), slightly less than the plan. The plane I am building is very similar to this but it's called the Javelin from Guillow's as well. Thanks again!!

      @@sportsscience3 True, there are no measurements given, only the template to cut the balsa stick to the right length. I measured the template for you.

    Hi Jon, it's Vivian again, I'm wondering if I may ask you one more question? I really appreciate any advice. I am trying to connect the wheels (with a common pin through them for stability as mentioned in the instructions) to the landing gears (that are supported by the wires provided). Any idea how to do this part? Thanks!

      The landing gear in the plans are very fragile. The wheels will break off on the first landing. I would not use the landing gear. Your rubber power Javelin will fly better with no landing gear. If you must have wheels make the landing gear from a single length of music wire attached to a bulkhead. Similar to the video at 2:35 but with a hole for the rubber to pass through.

    What Receiver/servo combo did you use? I am building a Guillows P40 and I was thinking of using a AS3X gyro receiver/servo board but it is pretty pricy. I might do it anyways because the Spectrum gyro "SAFE" system is pretty amazing for a crappy flyer like myself.

      I put the parts list in the video description. I like to convert free-flight to RC because they are stable and self-righting airplane designs. No stress flying.

      @@DuffusMonkey A low wing warbird like the P40 can benefit from a stabilizer system. They tend to be fast and twitchy in flight. Probably why I haven't built or flown any. :-)

      @@Jon.Carlsen Since I now see the link to your build on the Flitetest forums I checked it out, VERY NICE! I appreciate you taking the time to document it. Since my kids went to college I am getting back into hobbies that I couldn't get my kids interested in. There is a very nice flying club near Southbend Indiana so I went to an indoor fly a few weeks ago. EVERYONE was flying Horizon Hobbies BNF. NOBODY had balsa for indoors. I plan on changing that. I also learned that I completely forgot how to fly and I messed up my Minibipe pretty good. I bought a Horizon cub S just for the indoor fly for now and I was amazed at how well the stabilization system worked. I may be hooked

    Hey there - great video !!! I notice that you cover the wings and horizontal stab a "section" at a time - from the main spar and forward and then backwards ... then I guess the wing tips .. is there a particular reason you follow such an approach ? Also - where do you git this laminating film please ? Thank you for your time.

      Thank you very much. I am not sure I understand your question. There are no seams in the film at the wing spars. The wing bottom is covered using four sections of film and the top is covered in four sections. The film is heated and stretched over the tips so there are no seams at the tips. Each side, top and bottom, of the horizontal stab is covered with a single piece of film. You can buy the film from Laminator.com. It is made in several thicknesses, 1.5 mil (38 micron) being the thinnest. There is much more detail and discussion in the build log linked in the video description above. Best regards.
