- Here's my take on a fun song for kids, written by Michael Mitchell.
It talks about the Canadian coins, and my wife suggested I give it an update, since it was written before we had a loonie and a toonie.
Soooooo, I wrote some new verses, created an a capella arrangement, recorded and mixed the audio, then recorded lots of video and put that all together!
It's aimed at younger students, but hopefully fun for the kids in all of us!
There's a version with lyrics, and a version without!
Go, Canada!
I wrote my own loon lyrics, and took inspiration from yours.
"The loon, oh the loon
Is a beautiful sight to see
They're fliers, and they're divers
And their eyes glow like rubies
A necklace of white feathers
And their cry, it echoes free
They live on lakes across our land
They mean a lot to you and me"
Thanks for this, my class are singing about Canada for culture week- a primary school in London, UK.
Since the penny is no longer in use, here is an updated version of this song...
Chorus:
I've got Canada in my pocket
A little bit of history
A loonie, toonie, nickel,
And a quarter and a dime
Mean a lot to you and me
It's more than pocket money
They're the symbols of our land
They're pictures of important things
For which this country stands
Verse 1:
The beaver, the beaver
Is a beautiful sight to see
He's a happy, furry animal
Like a teddy bear with teeth
He's never ever lazy
He works all night and day
Building houses for his family
He's got no time to play
Chorus:
Verse 2:
The schooner, the schooner
Is a beautiful sight to see
It's a great big wooden sailing ship
That can sail across the sea
It brings to other countries
The things their people need
And brings back things like chocolate bars
And books for us to read
Chorus
Verse 3
The caribou, the caribou
Is a beautiful sight to see
He's a really big strong animal
I'm sure you'll all agree
He looks like Santa's reindeer
And he loves it when the wind blows cold
So he lives up north with the polar bears
'Cause he likes the ice and snow
Chorus:
Verse 4
The loon, the loon
Is a beautiful sight to see
They live on lakes all over our land
They mean a lot to you and me
They're rugged, smart, and hardy
And their cry, it echoes free
They're spread all across our country
The true north, strong and free
Chorus:
Verse 5:
The polar bear, the polar bear
Is a beautiful sight to see
He lives way up in the arctic
And he swims in the deep blue sea
He's a symbol of our country
He's majestic, strong, and free
And if you see a polar bear
Then climb a great big tree
Chorus (2x):
Amazing! This is the update all grade 1 teachers have been waiting for! Thanks :)
Thank you Mark for doing this, it's amazing! You are so talented! We are going to listen to it this morning in our online classroom :) I taught for years with Caroline at Bishop, please tell her it was a great idea to change up this classic we always use when learning about money in kindergarten :)
what about 50 cent
great song, but my class was very overstimulated by all the background music in the song. I would love to hear just the lyrics without all the background noice.
I agree. Loved the idea of an update, but arrangement is very busy, making it challenging to focus on the lyrics.
Yes, especially the 'where's Jesse' meowing and squawking needs to go. The new lyrics are great. It would be nice to have just the lyrics.
This is great! We are learning coins right now!
So glad you like!! Hope the kids enjoy it’
Thank you for the update! I'm showing it to my kindie class.
This is AMAZING!! Thanks so much for the update. I love a song that kids love AND teachers love. You are super talented and I am super thankful for the new version. Thank you!
Ah, so kind! Thank you, and glad you enjoy!!
No pennies here! Just caring during unfair times. :)
I love this!! I'm so excited my class is just starting learning about coins now so we have this awesome new version! Thanks so much for sharing!!
My school have been practicing your song

Thanks for this. my class is making a concert.
I like the idea that you took a new take on the original song, however, I found it a bit too much with all the noise effects and for kindergarten, it is way to fast.
I love it !!!!!
Awesome job! I'm going to teach my students this for music class. I love that you added loonie and toonie lyrics!
We are performing it 😅
