    SEARS/Wayne: We're a couple of days from hosting Thanksgiving visitors and the water heater stopped working; this excellent presentation lead me thru a methodical checkout of our water heater; fortunately, I got off with just resetting the internal breaker [maybe something going out??]. All I know is, water is heated and my wife is glad that i can shower. Thank you for this public service.

      We're glad to hear that our troubleshooting video helped. We hope that the water heater continues to work through the holiday. After the holiday, you may need to shut off power to the water heater and replace a heating element. You may also need to drain sediment from the tank if you haven't done that within the last year and the bottom heating element failed. Tank sediment could have helped cause the bottom element to corrode and short out which may have caused the overload to trip. Here's a video that shows how to drain sediment from the tank: www.searspartsdirect.com/article/how-to-drain-the-tank-on-an-electric-water-heater-video.html We hope this additional information helps and we hope you have a good holiday.

    Mine was the *BOTTOM HEATING ELEMENT.* It tested BAD - 8.5 instead of 13 on the bottom heating element. I tested the bottom heating element because I got a bad read when testing 4 - 4 (Terminal 4 of the upper thermostat & terminal 4 of the Hi-temp limit switch). The bad read was 8.5 which is exactly what I got when I tested the bottom heating element. The *symptoms* was our circuit breaker would trip for our water heater *only* 1 or 2 times a week. When I switched the circuit breaker back on it would run fine for 4 or 5 days before getting tripped again. *Thank you for the tremendous help!*

    we just had the elements and thermostats replaced in our water tank but it crapped out again after a few days of about 5 min at a time of extremely hot water. Is this an electrical issue causing the tank to malfunction or just another issue with the tank that we missed?

  • @patlawler9260
    @patlawler9260 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You mentioned that the final problem could be the transfer switch in the upper thermostat. Was there a test for that? You just said if it was bad then replace the upper thermostat.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We don’t have a test that checks the transfer switch because the transfer switch doesn’t shift power to the lower heating element unless the upper element heats the water enough to trip the transfer switch. If the upper element works and you measure continuity through the lower element, then you’ve eliminated all other possible failures. That leaves the transfer switch as the cause of the heating failure.

    I couldnt find any breaks. Still cant figure out what's wrong.
    I also tested continuity with 1 & 4 and 2 & 4 or the upper thermostat switch and got a reading of 27 ohms. Not sure if that's a problem.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The resistance reading you provided sounds normal, but here’s one more check. Disconnect the black wire from terminal 4 and recheck the resistance. You should measure infinite resistance between 1 & 4 and 2 & 4 with that wire disconnected. If you don’t measure infinite resistance, you’ll likely need to replace the upper thermostat. If you do measure infinite resistance, we recommend you have a service technician examine the water heater because you might have a voltage supply problem. The technician can check the voltage supply going to the water heater. You can schedule service here: www.searshomeservices.com/.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A broken dip tube can cause water heating problems. The water heater will typically be able to heat the water to some degree with a broken dip tube so we didn't address that issue in this video. Our troubleshooting focuses on problems that will prevent the water heater from heating at all. Thanks for pointing out that problem that can cause water heating problems. It may help viewers whose water heater isn't heating the water efficiently to troubleshoot the heating failure.

      There’s a good chance that the water heater is okay since the short in the wire was in the incoming power supply wire. If you’re still not getting hot water after repairing the wire, I recommend that you have a service technician or electrician check out the water heater and the supply wiring.

    I tried to look for that reset button. There were two possible places that it could be. When I opened the first place there was a lot of insulation. I saw some wiring, but there seemed to be some cardboard with what looked liked a reset button, but it was covered. I have never done this and that area looked like it should have had a reset button. I opened the second place and the insulation was wet. That made me think that something more might be wrong.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Finding wet insulation indicates that the tank or a water pipe connection is probably leaking. Keep the electrical power supply to the water heater shut off because the wet insulation can cause wiring to short out. The wet insulation also causes an electrocution hazard. I recommend that you have a service technician or plumber examine and repair the water heater in this situation.

    After loosing the element catch the slug of water with a towel.

    Here is the easy method.CUT OFF BREAKER AND VERIFY AT UNIT WITH TESTER.
    The bottom element in a Rheem comes on first. The upper thermostat cuts it on.
    Disconnect wires to both elements. Set meter to Ohms. The range is around 12.8. If OF is displayed element is bad.
    If both elements test good it is the top thermostat usually.
    Another sign of that is when heating water the top element not the bottom element comes on. You might have hat water for a short time but up to 15 minutes.

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can set the meter at the 200 ohm range or set it for the continuity tone (the setting just to the right of the 200 ohm range). One lead must be in the right side terminal and the other lead can be in the middle or left terminal to check resistance.

    Thanks for this video, this has saved me at least twice. How do you check to see if the transfer switch is working?

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Checking the transfer switch is difficult and would involve making live voltage checks which we don’t recommend for DIY’ers. You may be able to determine whether the transfer switch is working based on this symptom. If the water heater heats water but hot water runs out quickly and the water heater takes hours to heat the water after you run out of hot water, then the transfer switch may be defective. If you decide to replace the upper thermostat because symptoms point to a bad transfer switch, be sure that you shut off electrical power to the water heater before beginning the repair.

      @@searspartsdirect Thank you so much for the advice. After going through all the troubleshooting tips I finally determined what the issue was, a timer on the heated water supply. The previous owner of the house had the hot water on a timer and the mechanism slipped or shifted to a point where the heat was on for one hour and off for 23 hours. This thing drove me crazy but it was well worth it to finally figure out. Thanks again.

    I have a water heater that is heating very well and up to temp, although it will only produce HOT water if you open two different faucets at the same time, otherwise if you only have one faucet open, it produces WARM water only. Any ideas

      We recommend that you have a plumber fix this type of problem. Your water system may have a tempering valve. A tempering valve mixes cold water with the hot water when it senses hot water temperature above scalding temperature. The tempering valve could be leaking or malfunctioning. If your system doesn’t have a tempering valve, you may have a leaky faucet valve that’s allowing cold water to be drawn into the hot water side when you turn on a single faucet.

    What if I have 32 ohms on upper element and 28 ohms on lower element and my thermostat keeps tripping? What is wrong?

    I did the troubleshooting on my electric water header but the readings from terminal #4 to terminal #4 is 11.8 ohms. What does it means ,if lower than 13.0 ?@fh 3911

    • @searspartsdirect
      @searspartsdirect  ปีที่แล้ว

      That resistance reading is close to normal. If the reading was 1 or 2 ohms, then the element would likely be bad.

    When I test the switch between upper and lower thermostat, and the temperature is below what the tank is set at, on the upper thermostat I get 0 ohm between terminal 1 and 2 and roughly 18ohm between 1 and 4 - what does this mean? (This is a brand new thermostat).
    Upon testing, both thermostats seem to be ok and both elements give 9 ohm resistance. Wiring at the top seems ok too, but tank overheats and ECO keeps tripping!
