    The great Lucrecia Martel ventures into the realm of historical fiction and makes the genre entirely her own in this adaptation of Antonio di Benedetto’s 1956 classic of Argentinean literature. In the late 18th century, in a far-flung corner of what seems to be Paraguay, the title character, an officer of the Spanish crown (Daniel Giménez Cacho) born in the Americas, waits in vain for a transfer to a more prestigious location. Martel renders Zama’s world-his daily regimen of small humiliations and petty politicking-as both absurd and mysterious, and as he increasingly succumbs to lust and paranoia, subject to a creeping disorientation. Precise yet dreamlike, and thick with atmosphere, Zama is a singular and intoxicating experience, a welcome return from one of contemporary cinema’s truly brilliant minds.     Lucrecia Martel es genial y merece realmente esa definición, muchas veces trivializada. No solo por sus extraordinarias películas, sino por la profundidad y sutileza con las que aborda la percepción y teoria del arte en general. Más todavia: sus intervenciones públicas en torno a la situación de los más desfavorecidos socialmente, pobres en general, indìgenas y mujeres en particular, son de una enorme brillantez. Por otro lado, no exhibe de ningun modo esa tradición culterana medio superficial de ciertos artistas argentinos, (algunos muy buenos como artistas también, pero que creian pertenecer a una raza superior, elitista y sufridamente incomprendida..). No hay solemnidad en su discurso, pero si una admirable y exquisita profundidad humana, además de una extraordinaria inteligencia.

    It was interesting to immerse myself into a far away place and time. But the film was really slow and difficult to understand, at times. I noticed the film had almost no establishing shots that would show the overall settlement or landscape. Probably a sign of low budget.

      I think it's probably a sign of style more than a budget issue, she keeps us kinda trapped in those shots, in which we can't see everything, and that makes us feel uncomfortable and confused just like the main character is, since he has no perspective of leaving the place and his time there seems endless to him. Of course that's something personal and even realizing what the style is we can argue that it's actually not well done, but assuming right away that not seeing the bigger picture is a problem makes us think that there's only one "right" way to shoot, edit and make films... As cinephiles it's always a good thing to try watching all kinds of movies and ask ourselves how they use the film grammar to compose a style that makes us feel certain things and question whether they do it well or not.
