      Also CCNP and CCIE ENCOR 350-401 Official Cert Guide 2nd Edition (page 96) says that there are 4 roles in VTP, not 3 - Server, Client, Transparent and Off. I suppose it better to be aware of this being preparing for exam.

    I just want to say thanks for these videos. I've tried out multiple courses over the last few weeks, and have constantly felt overwhelmed when watching them. It made me feel like I wasn't up to the task of learning this stuff, and I nearly gave up all together. Your videos were the first time I ever felt capable of understanding the subject matter.
    I think most courses simply underestimate the importance of repetition and association. They mostly discuss a subject once, regardless of complexity, and then simply assume you understand everything and move on. The Anki cards you added are really a great resource in that regard. I started out with just the cards you made, but added tons of my own to help me study. There's just so much to remember, but your approach makes it feel managable. So, keep up the good work. Eventhough this course isn't finished yet, your videos are definately what made me decide to get my CCNA.

      Thank you so much for this comment, really made my day. I do agree with you about some courses, not just for CCNA but for anything. There are plenty of CCNA instructors with more experience than me (people who have had their CCNA for decades, while I've had my CCNA for 2 and CCNP for 1.5), but I think the fact that I'm still 'fresh' helps me understand what its like to study the material from zero. Hopefully that helps make my course understandable!

As I looked at the official explanation, I found that it is not as concise as you. The official guide made me more nonplussed. I have a doubt.. if anyone could answer..Thanks in advance..
    6:47 A switchport in dynamic desirable mode will actively try to fom a trunk with other cisco switches. It will form a trunk if connected to another switchport in following modes:
    Switchport mode trunk and switchport mode dynamic desirable.
    29:12 In quiz question 1:
    How is trunk formed between two switches?
    My understanding is: SW1 interface is operating in access port mode (As per question) and older spare switch will default to switchport mode dynamic desirable. So in this scenario, trunk will not form and both will operate as access ports.
    Am I missing something here?

    • @JeremysITLab
      @JeremysITLab  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! When the first DTP frames are sent (before the switches have agreed upon access vs trunk and ISL vs dot1q), both interfaces are access ports. So, there is no VLAN tag (no ISL or dot1q tag).
      If they then agree that they will form a trunk connection, if they decide to use dot1q the frames are sent untagged in the default VLAN (which is 1), but if they decide to use ISL the frames will be tagged in VLAN 1.

    It seems first question in quiz is wrong ? How does it make trunk when sw1 in access port and other one in desirable mode

    • @JeremysITLab
      @JeremysITLab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Two things you need to know to solve this question:
      1. New Cisco switches default to 'switchport mode dynamic desirable'
      2. Old Cisco switches defaulted to 'switchport mode dynamic auto'
      The question says the connected interfaces are OPERATING as access ports. It doesn't say they are CONFIGURED as access ports. So, when you remove one of the new switches and connect an old switch, a trunk is formed. Why is that? It's because the NEW switch had the default 'switchport mode dynamic auto' configuration, but the OLD switch which you just connected has the default 'switchport mode dynamic desirable' configuration. Auto + Desirable = a trunk is formed. Before, when the two new switches were connected, both had the default 'switchport mode dynamic auto' configuration. Auto + Auto will operate as an access port.

    Hey Jeremy, I am loving the content. I have a question concerning question 1. If the old switch is in "dynamic desirable" mode by default and SW1 interface is in "access" mode. According to the table shown earlier at 9:58 , wouldn't it become an access port too?

    • @JeremysITLab
      @JeremysITLab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In that case it would become an access port. However the question states that a trunk was formed, so we know that SW1's interface wasn't configured in access mode.

    I am sorry, at 21:58 you say "ALL HOSTS will lose connectivity". I just want to clarify for myself why the hosts will lose connectivity if we do not configure VLANs on the hosts / PCs? Since after synchronization all the data in all switches will be the same, shouldn't the PCs/hosts work? I mean at what point, between what points will there be a mismatch? Maybe between Switch1, which is a server and Router, because In case with Switch Layer 2 traffic goes through Router, which is understood, but if SW layer 3 forward traffic directly to other networks? If this is Native Vlan, then the hosts should not lose connections in this case, in all other cases the hosts will lose their connection, did I understand correctly?

    • @JeremysITLab

      The only best practice regarding DTP is to disable it. Never use DTP in a real network!
      To force the VTP server(s) to send out an update (and make the new switch sync), create a new VLAN on the server and then delete it. It will send out an update each time, and the new switch will sync.

    switchport trunk encapsulation negotiate:
    This command enables the port to negotiate the trunking encapsulation protocol (ISL or 802.1Q) with the connected device if DTP is active.
    If DTP is disabled, the port will not negotiate the encapsulation type, and you must manually configure the encapsulation with switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q or switchport trunk encapsulation isl.
    switchport nonegotiate:
    This command disables DTP on the port, which means the port will not send or respond to DTP frames.
    As a result, the port will not automatically negotiate whether the link should be trunk or access, nor will it negotiate the encapsulation method (ISL or 802.1Q).

    You said that unless we use the switchport nonegotiate command, the switches won't stop sending the DTP frames. I used it on both the switches, but they still formed a trunk when both of them were manually configured into the trunk mode. Why?

    • @JeremysITLab
      @JeremysITLab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They form a trunk because they were both manually configured as trunks. You don't need DTP to form a trunk, DTP just allows the switch to automatically determine if the interface should be an access port or a trunk port.

    Hi Jeremy. Thanks for the excellent videos. How long it takes to see the synchronization done between switches. I used the same config in Packet tracer where all the switched were using version 2 and where using default settings. When I added a new vlan and a domain name on the SW1, it didn't synchronize with the other switches where the vlan DB didn't include the newly added VLAN on SW1 and revision number was not updated. The domain name was still null on the other switched. I followed the example in the video.

    Hi Jeremy, I know it may seem to be a stupid question, but could you explain the context of 'advertise', 'advertisement'? Does advertise mean it forwards information to to other switches/routers?

    • @JeremysITLab
      @JeremysITLab  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question, and you're basically correct. A VTP 'advertisement' includes information about the VLANs that exist on the VTP server switch. The clients receive the advertisement and compare it to their own VLANs, and then update their VLAN database if their VLAN database differs from the information they received in the adverisement.
      For example, if a client has VLANs 10, 20, and 30 in its VLAN database, and then receives a VTP advertisement from a server with VLANs 10, 20, 30, and 40, the client will update its VLAN database to include VLAN 40.

    Hi Jeremy! As for the DTP frames sent in the native VLAN when using 802.1Q. If the native VLAN on one switch is different that the other, let's say SW1 has native VLAN100 and SW2 has native VLAN200, are there will be any problems or DTP negotiation will still be established? Also about VTP if a new switch with higher revision number is added to our topology and it's in the same VTP domain but it is acting like VTP client instead of VTP server, it will still create problems to our topology? All switches will sync their VLAN databases to the new switch?

    • @st10689
      @st10689 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I try it out and I find some things:
      1) DTP negotiation was still established with switches having different native VLANs. Is it correct or it has something to do with packet tracer?
      2) In a different scenario I connect three switches in a row. The left one operates as a server, the middle one as transparent and the right one as a client. Server and client are in the same VTP domain and the transparent is in a different one or in null, but VTP advertisements from the server are still received by the client. Why is that? I thought the transparent would forward the advertisements to the client only if it was in the same domain with the server and client.
      3) Again another scenario, I connect a new switch in my topology acting as a client with the default null domain and a higher revision number than the main VTP server I had and all switches sync their databases with the new client one. So servers can sync to a client?

    Sidenote for everyone;
    As Jeremy mentioned in the video, it is recommended to not use DTP nor VTP.
    Well, DTP can be disabled per port, but VTP can’t be disabled.
    The best practice to do here is to just put all your switches in VTP mode transparent.
    If left in the default state, all it takes is anyone connecting a cisco switch, or a linux machine pretending to be a cisco switch, in the network on a trunk and they can freely destroy the whole vlan structure and gain access across vlans Without needing any passwords/secrets.
