    I've noticed that "there is no map for..." is an alarmingly common complaint in Delta Green reviews.

    • @Skullkan6
      @Skullkan6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Delta Green devs have stated that it works less well with minis and maps than most games. Theres a new gamemaster day stream where shane ivey states it as "being more of a bug than a feature".
      Barring certain scenarios like Ex Oblivion its usually done more theatre of the mind style with bulletpoints on an area map being your location.

      Yeah I've noticed this too. I'm watching this a year or so after running LTL for a second time. My first time, I don't think I used a map, or if I did it was a real rough improvised sketch of the cabin, and nothing else. For my second time, I have a much more concrete image in my head of the spaces, including the apartment, but that also might have been theater of the mind. I remember definitely drawing a multi floor map for the cabin and surrounding space (shack, tank, etc.)

      When I ran this I just used google maps and described things very clearly. Didn't seem like much of an issue for us.

  • @malnorath4252
    @malnorath4252 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    I ran this in 2018 after I got the book. I ran it RAW from the book and the simplicity threw me for a loop, I was left thinking.... That's it? No climax? No conflict? My inexperience made me feel like I did something wrong.
    My one player listened to Marlene's story then dumped the gasoline in and had himself a barbeque. That was it.
    I should have added more stuff to make it interesting, but as a new Keeper I didn't know what else to do.

      No worries. We've all been there (and probably will again). I learned all my tricks the hard way. Hopefully you player still had fun. Also, many of the suggestions I give were based on my running it and thinking afterward, "How could I have done that better?"

  • @NumbSkull2602
    @NumbSkull2602 3 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    I ran this for my players as my first Delta Green game, everyone was new and we had a blast… literally, they basically blew up an acre of forest trying to kill the thing that was Marlene.
    It was pretty metal, though one of the players saw the spirit fly off at the end, to be continued another time.
    They turned on all the gas in the cabin, after they’d already poured gasoline all into the septic tank (which I decided would be full of methane as well, makes sense to me), and during the bloody battle with the creature, they sparked it with a gunshot off the rim of the septic tank and the gasoline ignited, which ignited the methane, which ignited the pipes and the gas inside the cabin, and the whole damn thing went up!
    I took your advice on putting future adventures in files inside the cabin, and you’re right, it worked great, we moved on to doing Operation Fulminate: The Sentinels of Twilight, and now we’re making our way through the A Night at the Opera collection… it’s been a hot minute since we played, as I’ve been running other games and we’ve had other commitments, but I’m keen to pick it back up again

    • @matthew_thefallen
      @matthew_thefallen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The septic tank was not attached to the plumbing of the house, in the original scenario though.. sounds fun.

      I suppose the PC's first clue to what's in the septic tank could be a muffled voice singing "Tiiii-iii-iii-iiime is on my siiiide..."

  • @RiotKurhein
    @RiotKurhein 6 ปีที่แล้ว +128

    My suggestion would be turning the septic tank into a bomb shelter he converted into a ritual chamber. That he then fled after discovering the entity. The reason it hasn't left is due to arcane wards etched into the threshold.

    Spoilers:
    I've GM:ed this scenario two times.
    The first time the characters were part of "The Cowboys" faction of Delta Green. They listened to the creature for a while, realized it was hiding something and then tried to burn it. It jumped out of the tank, fought them for a while and then tried to flee in the direction of a store they had passed on the way to the cabin. The PCs double timed it in a car towards the cabin and managed to set up an ambush and then "killed" it. Afterwards they rigged the electrical system to cause the fire to burn down. Later in the campaign they got to play another scenario where the creature had managed to convince people in a town the help it find victims to eat.
    The Second time went allot smoother for the characters. They were part of the Program this time. They seemed convinced that the "zombie" still retained the mind of Marlene so they lend her one of their jackets to cover her up. She then tried to escape when she realize they weren't going to let her go, but she failed miserably several times. In the end they handed her over to The Program which started to perform experiments on her (whithout the PCs knowledge).

    • @MrJHM007
      @MrJHM007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      That seems like a good example of how The Outlaws and The Program have different views and approaches to the supernatural.

    Nice review. Just to clarify re the Agents Handbook and the Handlers Guide - the Agents Handbook contains the full rules and more character background options (as compared to the 'Need to Know' quickstart set which contains this scenario). The Handlers Guide is a combination 'bestiary' (mythos entity stats) setting/lore book (all the background lore/history of Delta Green's take on how the Unnatural Lovecraftian mythos has shaped and continues to shape the world) and guide to 'Magic' (called 'HyperGeometry here) and how magical rituals or artifacts can both be deployed against PCs and what happens when PCs try to use use/them. You could probably get by on the base rules in 'Need to Know' if you wanted to, and certainly could do a lot more with the Agents Handbook and your own imagination. Of course I'd recommend getting the Handlers Guide as well. The 'lore' of the DG world is rich, imaginative and superbly detailed and will provide TONS of inspiration.

    The body possession thing seems like a good way to do a Thing scenario. Maybe find Marlene in the cabin itself. She lets them look around the cabin, they find the note, take the gasoline out to the tank like normal. Instead of there being a voice, Marlene either left dead animals in it, or kept live ones to fool the players. Have it be maybe start to rain, washing out the road, so they need to stay longer. Wake up in the morning, and Marlene is dead. Pass notes to the players with one being told they're now the Thing.

    • @Skullkan6
      @Skullkan6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kali Ghati is a good one shot but it can use some work. It didn't make sense for me for the villagers to all wait once the pcs entered the temple so I had 8 guys on the stairs for the PC's to pop on their way out (with the lethality rules they go down FAST) 2 at a time down the steps and the whole village waiting outside in a large group holding hands waiting to try to force them back down the steps, using the "siege" section of the module rules for how to fight a group that large.
      I've run this twice with that modification and it works beautifully. Popping the guys on the stairs makes the PC's feel amazing, like action heroes pushing their way to the surface after the disempowerment below and once they see the crowd that dread comes back.

    I know im years late to the party but another thing you could have is have the 4 gas cans have some sort of rosaries or carvings and the last one would be completely empty as the local hunters used the gas to fill up their truck. This gives both one hell of a intro to the boss as maybe the pcs forget to check every can if its full and while she's screaming out for help as they pour the gas they realize they dont have enough and she then attacks.

    Then I rewatched this video because it's been a long while since I ran DG, and I also ended up finding said video that references Evil Dead.

    If you want a VERY dark followup I have an idea. You could use this to salvage things if they player(s) lose to the monster. I think it would be most likely if their is only one investigator. The monster kills the investigator and swaps bodies.
    The followup team is called in when the original investigator is found dead at a school shooting/attack. It turns out the monster possessed the dead investigator and committed the attack. It took over one of its victims. Now the players have to try and figure out why the "agent" committed the attack and get rid of the monster once it's discovered.

    I'll be honest I would consider adding something more on the bonds if a character immediately torches the tank even as the creature tries to plead with them. Have a thing where all the players who disagree get even more stress and have risks for it when the player(s) who torched the tank immediately so other thing I'm the future. Maybe even make those ones who rushed take more if they even hold back. They seem like the characters who would say I told you so and that could be an interesting drawback.

    Well that’s a gorram shiny tshirt. Delta Green is one of my favourite things & the comparison to the X-Files is an apt one since both are kinda stuck in the 90s (like me). Yeah, I'm a 90's kid. No shame there. But the VHS tapes were more to do with how long ago the former agent was an operative. It would be more realistic if they were old 8mm films, though, since he was active in Delta Green in the early 70's.

    Will you ever review any of the Adventure Modules from the indy (but Chaosium supported) CoC Module "Blood Brothers." In particular the first module in the book/downloadable document? I think when you read the back part of the first adventure, I think you'll see which ritual/spell from that book piques my interest that the PC's could particularly use and/or abuse. Even then, it could still be worked around by just making the PC's go through good ol' fashioned having them permanently lose their sanity or add the caveat that they can still die from physical violence, poison, disease, etc... In fact, this house and said spell could be tied into the monster from the end of this module you're reviewing quite easily.

    Since we're on the subject of other Lovecraftian games, I'm curious, do you have any experience with Trail of Cthulhu from Pelgrane Press? I've never had a chance to try it myself, but I am curious about it as I've heard quite a few CoC players seem to prefer it mechanically over the Chaosium version. I've finally resolved to upgrade from my 6th Edition books and I'm debating between Trail and 7e, any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Another idea you can do with the pilot is have something like maybe the mud is starting to suck the Starship under like with Luke Skywalker's X-Wing and the pilot has to use the tractor being or tow cables and keep the ship from sinking while the boarding crew is rescuing the survivors nou fails a role in my saying causing something to happen in ship

    Would Delta Green be a good platform to base an XCOM game around?

    • @NefariousKoel
      @NefariousKoel 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      DG is overwhelmingly Mythos oriented. Although it has a very interesting 'gray' alien lore hook with a creamy Lovecraftian center. It's still a very CoC-style investigative game, however. I think the older Conspiracy-X rpg had more focus on alien stuff, among other X-files type cryptid stuff. I only have the GURPS 3e book for that setting, though, and never fully delved it. Still investigation leaning to some extent. When you say "Xcom" I'm guessing you want an action-heavy military style alien killing RPG, however. In that case, you'd probably need to find a supportive system (possibly a universal one) and do the extra work to flavor it with what you want.

    This actually gives me an idea. Alright, in the chance that the PCs don't get the key in the apartment, and the next day they go to the cabin in the woods, what if one of the family members of this dead Delta Green Agent goes up there, having found the key in the apartment that the PCs didn't get? So now as the PCs are dealing with the Other trying to get out of that septic tank, the Agent's son in law or something comes by, seeing all this happening and suddenly you got another innocent that could potentially die.

      So far it's the only one. I played some Delta Green under Bud from Bud's RPG review, but it was a home-grown scenario, so nothing to review. However last month I did finally pick up the DG Rulebooks and some of the adventures,. So if my players agree to it once we're done with our Righteous Blood, Ruthless Blades campaign, and probably a short jaunt into Blade Runner, we'll begin playing and then I'll have something to review.
      Short answer, no, but maybe in a year.
