Those are foam core ribs we added to stiffen the flat areas where metal wasn't touching. They are made from a light polyiso foam (I think it was 4lb) we just happened to have on hand from an old project. It's a very easy sanding foam great for this kind of thing, but doesn't do well as a core in real parts. The foam that will melt with solvent is polystyrene like you'd get at the home improvement store.
