I learned the music in an Uber on the way to the gig | Gig Vlog #22

  • I was a sub on a gig with the Rock Dance Collective, but could only go over the music with the MD of the show in a taxi before the gig. Hilarity ensues.
    The Rock Dance Collective is co-run by Cleo Mack, Kelli McGovern and Blair Richey
    Choreography by Cleo Mack
    Music Direction by Josh Bailey

    I go to a local rock jam/open mic sometimes with my bass for the hell of it. Some guys will come up and ask me to play bass on some random rock song. I'll look up the chords on my phone, and if there is an important bass lick maybe the tabs, and in a few minutes I'm doing it live like Bill O'Reilly. Sometimes it's a train wreck, but usually it works out ok. Also, the more you drink the harder it gets (but the more the audience drinks, the better I sound).

    The thing I like about this gig vlog is it shows the importance of a "common language" between two musicians that goes BEYOND just the score. Josh was able to communicate a bunch of nuance in a short time that a dead-cold-reading pit-orchestra guy wouldn't have picked up on. A common "language" or frame of reference makes all the difference in whether a collaboration can succeed in a compressed timeframe; and this highlighted that really well.

    It seems that some people are thinking the Josh and Adam are agreeing amongst themselves that the dance show is "super Brooklyn hipster bullshit." They aren't. They are saying that the dance show has one intentional joke about "Brooklyn hipster bullshit" in it, and Adam and Josh get and like the joke.

      @@spinningbackkick6021 75$ isn't bad. He didn't have to prep at all. All of the work was done on the day. The performance wasn't even primarily music. The material was easy, and he got breaks. It's like 3 hours of work and interesting material.

    God I'd love to play for real dancers, there's something amazing about that connection between humans separated by space but connected by sound.
    Mind you, that's a double fantasy: There's nowhere near here to do that, and my time keeping isn't even close to good enough to play for professional dancers...

    Hey Adam,
    Would being a pianist and vocalist make it easier to have a successful music career in NYC? , because those two instruments seem to be more accessible than say, a tuba player.
    What’s your opinion between the connection between instrument and success?
    Thanks.

    • @112niemand
      @112niemand 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There is also the concept of quantity to consider though. There are probably a lot more singers and pianists available than say, tuba players.

    Dude, I've been watching your stuff for maybe a year, I don't know, but I hadn't seen this title until now. I've been through that before. Not specifically in an Uber, but getting the lowdown on an entire show in about a half hour sit down. I'm not the greatest at sight reading, so I'm happy to have the chords and mainly play the melodic shapes. You know, walking up or down a scale or bouncing from root to 3rd, 4th,5th or whatever. I've never been told my bass playing wasn't good enough, so, though I'm never satisfied with my performances (even if I've practiced with a group for weeks), I guess I don't suck too bad.

    Goes to show that being a full-time musician in NYC is HARD. This is what it takes. There are 100s of musicians who don't make it because they're entitled or take the grind for granted. Also, how cool is that Josh Bailey dude.

    @russellszabadosaka5-pindin849 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    He's not "learning the music" on the way to the gig, Adam and the MD are reviewing the show cues & music charts and discussing the writer's vision for the event. Which sounds like Maximum Andy Kaufman.

    • @Hennu_TRM
      @Hennu_TRM 6 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Well isn't that basically learning the music? Once you reach a certain level of proficiency with an instrument, learning songs in a style that you're somewhat familiar with is mostly about knowing the form and playing with a band, maybe a melody line here and there. I mean, there was definitely some stuff about the general flow of the gig, but I don't think calling this "learning the music" is inaccurate.

    • @russellszabadosaka5-pindin849
      @russellszabadosaka5-pindin849 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      poiewhfopiewhf & variousthings : Re: my Andy Kaufman reference. I was pointing out that his spirit is alive and well in this event. When Adam & Josh Thee MD are talking in the Uber, Josh mentions the performance is intended to make the audience uncomfortable, actors are performing "on stage" and some are discreetly planted in the audience and the intention is to make us question the standard performer/audience relationship by blurring the line between the real performance and the "real performance". That whole approach is cool to perform & watch and comes straight out of classic Andy Kaufman performances...whether the writers intended this as homage or not, it's almost impossible not to make the association and that's fine, it does not take anything away from this event's validity. I lived in New York for most of my life, I would've gone to see this in a heartbeat if I was still there.

    Dude singers have it easy and same with guitar players. Anytime I tell someone I play bass they tell me OMG THATS SO EASYYYY ACOUSTIC AND ELECTRIC IS SO HARD! Little do they know how many techniques there are to playing bass and it's probably the most important instrument along with drums in a band.

      I agree bass is often seen as undervalued and easy but "singers have it easy and same with guitar players" and this "it's probably the most important instrument along with drums in a band" is complete bullshit, it depends on the band, some bands would thrive without bass, some without drums, some without guitars and so on and so forth. It depends on the music, all instruments have an equally important part to play.
