    Continuing the reaction to the first Led Zeppelin album is "You Shook Me". Ah, the Blues. Mike & Dev compare the Muddy Waters and Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart versions as well.
    Haven't heard these songs in a LONG time. (Dev hasn't heard some of them at all.) We are re-experiencing them, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate more about Zeppelin, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.

    That vibrato sound on the organ is one of the pre-sets, you can add at the flick of a switch. It's the sound of a Leslie speaker which creates the swirling sound by literally mechanically spinning the high frequency speaker, almost like a fast doppler effect. They usually had a couple of speeds a fast or slow vibrato to choose from to suit the tempo of the song. It's there all the time on this song but you notice it more when he holds a longer note. They could be inbuilt into keyboards or be a stand alone powered speaker cabinet. They were used creatively a lot by The Beatles to run guitars, and even vocals, through when they started looking for new ways to manipulate sounds and being more inventive in the studio. The Leslie speaker sound can, like most things, be emulated digitally now, but nothing quite beats the gritty analogue physicality of the real thing.

    I've been listening to Zeppelin since late 68 or early 69. In south central Nebraska we had only AM radio. We were listening to The Turtles, Grass roots, Doors, The Byrds etc. Then one night driving around drinking (ya DON'T try that part today) my buddy put in this album on 8 track and my musical direction changed forever. I own 2 or more of all their albums. Some of which have only been played 1 or 2 times. Saving them for when I wear the original out.

    The Hammond B3 was a full sized 3 layer keyboard organ that was used by groups, such as ,Deep Purple, Vanilla Fudge and Yes. The wavering sound you hear is from hooking it up to a spinning Leslie speaker in a cabinet designed specifically for the B3. I want you to listen to Vanilla Fudge organist Mark Stein on the album "In The Beginning" with side 2," Break Song " where each member does a solo within the song. You will hear the best use of a Hammond B3 and Leslie speaker.Also enjoy Tim Bogart on bass, and Carmen Appice on drums (many equal Carmen to John Bonham on drumming abilities). I forget the fine guitarists name. You gotta check the Fudge out. Peace.

    My grandmother had an organ in the late 50’s into the 60’s. Bass pedals. It had all kinds of “stops” which you could pull out or push back to change the tone….to bring in vibrato on the note, to increase or decrease volume. That’s what JPJ is playing with here……manipulating the stops for different tones…

    Ok, there's a lot to digest here. I'm still trying to figure out if your wife is irritated doing this or not. Her body language radiates annoyance, got to be honest.
    Now I appreciate your comments and the fact that you pick up the subtleties. Especially targeting that "wobbling" organ. Maybe it's going through a Leslie speaker? Perhaps, but I love JPJ doing it, whatever the hell it is.
    Next, I think this album was recorded in something like 36 hours. Don't quote me, but I thought I read that someplace. And Page financed this himself, because he wanted to bring a complete master for a better record deal. At least he and manager Peter Grant figured that would get them the best leverage. And Atlantic bit, with a huge contract at the time.
    Keep going with your song by song plan, I'm enjoying it. I also mean no offense to your lady either, it's just the feeling that she'd rather be doing something else.
    But I'm still subscribed, and look forward to more!

    • @MusicforBusyPeople
      @MusicforBusyPeople  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dev is into Zeppelin and going through this process is getting her to appreciate them more. She's not annoyed; it's just hard to get her to sit still for an extended period sometimes. Lol.
      Thanks for your comment about picking up subtleties. That's one of my goals with this exercise.
      I read in another viewer's comments about Page financing the 36 hours of recording sessions. That's wild, but I am not surprised. He was a visionary.

    Jeff and Jimmy had been friends since they were about13. The Yardbirds started with Eric Clapton, and when he quit, Jimmy was asked to leave the session world and join but he turned it down out of friendship with Clapton and recommended Jeff instead. Jeff joined and when bassist Paul Samwell-Smith quit, Jeff asked Jimmy to join on bass, which he did, until Chris Dreja could pick up bass and Jimmy switched to co-lead guitar with Jeff until Jeff quit (or got fired, depending on who you ask). Not only did this Truth album have John Paul Jones on You Shook Me, it had Jimmy, John Paul Jones, Keith Moon and Nicky Hopkins on Beck's Bolero. Beck's Bolero turned out very well and it was at this session they somewhat half joking/half serious said they should form a group of their own. Afterwards, depending on who tells the story, either Keith Moon or John Entwistle said such a thing would go over like a "lead balloon" and someone said "No, like a lead Zeppelin". Jimmy would remember the comment later as it fit in with his enjoyment of dichotomies. Truth was released before LZ I and there was a bit of hurt feelings from Jeff when he heard Zep's version of You Shook Me. I like Robert's wails on this since it showcases his range and versatility to do a call and response with the guitar. I do admit, I don't *always* appreciate his vocal tone, however, I cannot deny that it isn't an effective instrument.

    • @MusicforBusyPeople
      @MusicforBusyPeople  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing all that fun stuff. It's amazing that those 3 amazing guitarists were all in the same band. Jeff Beck's playing is great, but some producers still didn't know how to mix stereo back then.

    • @henriettaskolnick4445
      @henriettaskolnick4445 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MusicforBusyPeople I also meant to comment that Jeff and Jimmy are still friends; Jimmy inducted Jeff into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. Yeah Eric left The Yardbirds because he was in his "Blues purist" phase and felt their song, For Your Love was too commercial. Zep did a really heavy, funky version of that song live from the Whiskey A Go Go. It's on TH-cam, you guys should find it and do a comparison with the actual Yardbirds version. I don't know if it's that they didn't know how to mix stereo or if its because stereo still wasn't considered a "thing" yet. You'll notice a lot of songs from that time (including Zep) have a lot of panning back and forth to simulate a stereo mix.
