First heard this when I was 16. At 72 I'm still amazed, delighted and living it. Somethings never leave one I guess.

This is a delicate and pacified music; Usually, Honegger's scores are much more tormented.Among these pacified scores, we may count "Pastorale d'été" (summer pastorale) and the two concertos, for cello and piano. The two symphonies which surround this one, the third "liturgique" and the fifth "di tre re", are very harsh and of a pessilmistic mood. This symphony was composed during vacation is Swiss, the "heart country" of origin of the composer, who was born in France and lived in Paris. Those who love Honegger enjoy these relaxation times when the composer appears pacified. ❤❤❤❤ 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺

Such an emotional contrast to No.3 - though not without its darker moments. I find this so very uplifting.

In this symphony, commissioned by the Swiss cultural patron and conductor Paul Sacher from Basel, one can hear two popular Basel melodies.
    16:13 «Z'Basel a mym Rhy»
    25:17 «Morgestraich»
The former is intoned here by the horn. The latter is traditionally played by piccolos and Basel drums at the opening of Carnival of Basel. This permits the Latin title of the symphony to be translated as "Basel Specialities".

Quite a different listening experience from his 3rd Symphony but I love them both!

Heard this on a car radio 40 yrs. ago with aid of a bit of wacky tobacco. The second movement brought the goblins out of the woods.

Try a bit of wacky backy and driving in a heavy snowfall to the 2nd, slow movement of Sir Michael Tippetts sym no.2. That will really take you on a journey.
