Current and former Black Amazon employees claim racial discrimination

  • Chanin Kelly-Rae said the lack of ethnic diversity in upper-level management at Amazon was one of the first things that struck her when she walked onto the company’s Seattle campus for the first time.
“The only Black people that I saw every day were either opening doors or cleaning floors,” said Kelly-Rae. “As a woman that happens to identify as Black or African American, I was never as consciously aware of feeling very detached or different in the space as I was at the Amazon corporate campus.”
Kelly-Rae was hired as a global manager of diversity for Amazon Web Services in 2019. Her job was to help Amazon’s cloud computing service division increase diversity. www.king5.com/article/news/co...

Why is this video getting so many “thumbs down.” She’s not lying. In HR most of the black people are HRA’s. I have the most degrees and experience out of my managers and team. I wanted to get hired to get my foot in the door and regret it. I will be looking real soon, especially with the Veteran discrimination as well. I did my part with college and my military service. It’s not a race card, but bigger than that!

Part of the problem is how Amazon limits the advancement of entry level employees let alone minority employees they’ll hire 4 ‘s & up from off the street who are in certain cases are trained by level 1-3s but then will make it hard for a tier 1 to grow. I myself am a person who while in path who hits all the bench marks and have even done the work of a level 3 or 4 but because I don’t have the complexion or a degree or because I’m judged by my outward appearance I’m haven’t been given much opportunity to move up.

When I returned to work, there were no accommodations set up for me and to this day there are still none. I turned in all the paperwork from the hospital and the dialysis clinic along with two signed permission waivers so they could contact the doctors about my condition. I don't know anything to speak of about Amazon ... except for what I can buy of course... But a general statement as to the issue of Discrimination in the workplace. I had a contract with a large Fortune 500 Corporation. They appointed a minority General Manager to not only hire minorities for work in this area but who appeared to recruit from hundreds of miles away to bring in minorities and people who would not normally try to work in that particular area. The company appointed the minority (and woman) to her job in all probability because this is what they wanted her to do. They surely knew and could have fired her. I always obey the Law, of course and when I am required to work with people ---- I simply do not complain about the people I work with because I think it is bad business but I will avoid people who complain in any way about me because I believe that to be good business. In brief... I don't know what compliance Government is requiring of Corporations but what little I see they are making an impact. How many Black Businesses promote their products on Amazon and how many products sold on Amazon are "Made in China"?

Well… a) there was no argument here. The video just talks about their argument. b) that’s not your lived experience. You’re saying that you saw someone else not work as well as you say they should. But you aren’t talking about your experience working, you’re talking about your observation of someone else’s work.
But in general, since when we’re eyewitness accounts not credible? They are in court and they are in academia, so I’m not really sure why this bothers you, or why you’re watching this video tbh.

Look, this presentation is chock *full* of complete nonsense: Namely, it starts by decrying the fact that "56% of management is white". Sounds awful, right? Well, only to those who lap it up without thinking critically. The USA is ~66-70% white, so actually white people are (80%) under-represented in management roles. In fact, management is 10.9% black, and since black people are 12.5% of the US population, they are actually better represented (88%) than white people by a wide margin! Ah, but look, Asian people are more than twice again over-represented (~220%) in management in relation to their percentage in America. Think critically, people! This is just more nonsense to make you think the white man is the source of all your problems.

Agreed, Maria. No ethnic group is devoid of negative thoughts, including racism. I'd go as far as to say that white people are actually much *less* racist than other groups. This is simply due to the fact that only they are held accountable for racism, (in America, or anywhere else, for that matter,) hence they do it far less than other groups.
