What type of yarn are you using? Make always sure your yarn and hook are compatible. Then try not to pull too tight and give the yarn some slack, it might be a tension problem.

You can definitely use velvet yarn, just keep in mind, though, it tends to make the stitches less visible since they blend into each other.
