    Thanks, very interesting. It's certainly a wonderful old car! I've been watching Hubnut's channel here as he has a lovely little 2CV called Ellie that he does a lot of work on, despite him not being a car mechanic, just an amateur wrencher. So, I have spent a lot of time online under the bonnet of this charming little car ! One of his more ambitious jobs was to upgrade the cylinders to 650cc which he did fairly easily, and it apparently made a lot of difference to the performance of the car - he toured all around Europe in it this Summer!

    Unbolt the wings and take them off + the engine sides, makes it much easier to work on.

    designed to carry a bale of hay eggs and chickens over a ploughed field and convert into a shed and picnic set under a shady tree the 2CV was the perfect car for many rural french people

      It was the opposite of the VW beetle. Germans designed an urban car for the new autobahn the nazi regime was building everywhere.
      The 2CV was designed for "cultivators" as they said back then, when rural France had almost no undamaged infrastructure after the war.

    The ease of taking out the king pin is a part of the Citroen design philosophy, a car for farmers designed so that a farmer could do most repairs with common hand tools.

  • @rolandleusden
    @rolandleusden 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    2CV's need regular maintenance. At least every 1000 miles, lubricate grease nipples as follows: King pins - pump in grease until it emerges from between each king pin and the axle assembly; ensure king pin sealing plugs are intact. Driveshaft joints (ensure that gaiters are not damaged).
    Other aspects: Every 3000 miles lubricate hinges and lock mechanisms (wipe off excess lubricant), change oil and filter at least every 3000 miles or annually (whichever comes first). When 2CV owners are used to modern cars with much longer service intervals, this maintenance is easily forgotten.

    I owned a 1977 2CV back in the 1980s. Unfortunately due to strikes in Europe that year had poor quality steel and my car rusted badly 😞. It was great fun to drive, especially with the soft roof rolled back and the heater on. 😀

    2CV are designed very simple and made for simple people.
    You don t need special tools to repair them

    • @srfrg9707
      @srfrg9707 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      GoliathAngelus In fact int's very complex engeneering to reach such a simplicity. Take the wheels. They need no balance. Citroën designed a special kind of nut shaped as a cowboy hat. The three holes on the wheel ad lager than needed and the wheel has some freedom allowing it to auto balance around its center of mass. A sa result the owner has nothing to learn about the art of balancing wheels. Simplicity is not simple at all to acheive.

    The 2CV (and variations) was one of the largest mass produced car in history. Not quite a rare car. Rare in the US, but very common in Europe, Africa and south america.

    The play in the wheel bearing : Once you've tightened the driveshaft nut, the play should disappear.

  • @olavstrand2491
    @olavstrand2491 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Only judge the play in the wheel bearings with the driveshaft installed. The wheel bearings are ball bearings and some play is normal. It tightens up when the bearings gets up to temperature when driving. If you replace the bearings, go for the ones produced by SKF. They're more expensive, but way better quality than the cheaper alternatives. And advise your customer to grease up the kingpins often.

    • @IronSunsetscales
      @IronSunsetscales 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jusb1066 Yeah that happens all too often, if you have an old car, or an oddball, garages tend not to help you often. Small garages sometimes do, but then there is the risk of "did they took the job for the pay, or do they know what they're doing?" kinda thing
