    the way this show makes you prepared for the worst, and then you suddenly get hope like "is this really gonna be a happy ending?!" and then they rip it away from you in the last minutes...its really exactly what ash felt. all this time, he didn't dare to hope for a better life or happy ending. but in that moment when he saw the plane ticket, he did - and he let his guard down, just like the viewers, and he died for it.

    This show really said "fck your heart and emotions" to me when they totally messed me up with the ending
    Since then, I have seen soooo many people making up theories about how someone found Ash and called help for him. I read many stories written by people who gave it their own happy ending.
    While yes, I was salty and sad about the end of Ash, I could not keep my anger up when it said how peaceful Ash looked. So I just sat there, crying over a black screen when the episode ended back then when the anime first came out.
    This anime was so different and Ash as a character was so different, so special to me and it will forever have a special place in my heart (after it literally tore my heart apart, that is). A pity many people refuse to watch it, but the fans of this story are special as well, mostly depressed as hell, but special, nice and welcoming

    Banana Fish proving once again the gays can't live happily ever after 💀💀. Like seriously, after the finale I just stood in silence for about 30 minutes refusing to believe what had happened 😭 but I guess the ending was fitting in a way. And I love how Akimi Yoshida just gave a fuck about our feelings and gave us this heartbreaking ending.

    • @GudetamaSit
      @GudetamaSit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yep, love that epilogue (though it kills me to read). It's included in the last Banana Fish volume (19) released by Viz, called 'Garden of Light'. Also in there is 'Angel Eyes', telling how Ash and Shorter met in juvie.
      Not sure why the Blanca and Ash sidestory 'Private Opinion' wasn't included in there too. I'm not a big fan of Blanca and while this didn't make him much more likeable, it did give me some insight.

    • @T7Karou
      @T7Karou 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't.
      Leaving the story at this, with no other addition, is the best if you want to leave it at a well done ending (even if you don't like the message). The author made the future very discouraging and pretty tasteless for an epilogue, it just ruins it. Meanwhile the stories about past events would have been better to have read them while watching the anime if wanted, but it isn't necessary.
      /just an opinion under a viewed comment for the reactors; not the start of a debate

    • @GudetamaSit
      @GudetamaSit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@T7Karou Though I disagree on it not being well made, discouraging is the key word for the epilogue haha. Not a feel-good for sure, and how well it gives you closure is an opinion thing.
      Yeah it isn't essential to read the side stories or even the manga really if you've watched the anime (the anime pretty much adapts the manga in full besides maybe a few minor scenes of Charlie and Nadia etc). The side stories are an interesting addition though for me and it's great to experience the whole series again in the 80s setting it was intended.

    • @camilledumeige3

      @@T7Karou I love the epilogue because it shows the extent of Eiji's love for Ash. All this shit was traumatic and it feels right to me that Eiji is traumatised. When he told Ash his soul was always with him he meant it. The ending was poetic and you can leave it at that if you want but the repercussions of Ash's death on everybody in Garden of Light feels very realistic to me. I still understand why you and other people would prefer the ending as is though.

    Ash didn't die of a stab wound; he died from self-hate.
    The stab wasn't fatal, didn't hit any vital organs, and if he went to the hospital, he could've healed and lived.
    But he didn't think he deserved that. He didn't think he deserved saving, didn't think he deserved a peaceful life, didn't think he deserved Eiji's love. He just thought he's a danger to him and so he just... accepted death.
    I want to get him to therapy so bad and give him a hug.

  • @florenciahoracio8517
    @florenciahoracio8517 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I know this is from more than a year ago, but i wanted to leave this here for future watchers, like me.
    In the epilogue (never animated, only in manga) they tell us Eiji just stayed in Japan for a few days, maybe a week or two, and went back to New York before he could even heal, with Ibe, running back to Ash. Ibe came back alone. Eiji stayed living alone in New York and became a photographer, some years later (I think it was 7) he still can't accept Ash death. Sing visits him all the time, he even has a bedroom in Eiji's home, mostly to give him company and keep an eye on him, but also because he feels guilty about Lao killing Ash, he feels like making Eiji happy is now his responsability and he is not succeding. Ibe's niece goes to New York and stays at Eiji's place, he is about to have a gallery of his photography and she finds a photo album and notices that all the pictures that say "with A." are gone, she asks Sing if Ash was Eiji's lover and he says "He was more than that. Which doesn't mean their relationship was sexual, because it wasn't. But they did love each other... maybe the way lovers do. They were... connected to each other, soul to soul." at the end of the epilogue Eiji finally decides to look at Ash's pictures for the first time in seven years, picks one and adds it to his gallery, titled "Dawn". The writer of the manga (i think it was them, i don't remember) did said that if Ash and Eiji were given the chance to grow together a little more time, they would eventually have a healthy sexual relationship. Which is just twisting the knife because it makes you think about how young Ash was and how, when all the physical touch he knew was aggresive and damaging, Eiji was the only one who didn't expect sex from him, and taught him a more intimate and innocent touch, like when he hugs him. Is so sad he didn't have time to grow more, see more of life with Eiji, go to Japan and eventually known sexual touch that wasn't hurtful.

    You guys should totally read the extra content, especially "Garden of Light" (set 7 years after the ending)! "Angel Eyes" (when Shorter and Ash first met) was amazing too. I still need to read "Fly Boy in the Sky" (Eiji backstory) and "Private Opinion" (Blanca and Ash backstory) so I can't comment on those yet. Highly, highly recommend reading them. There's also a letter that Max wrote to Ash years after the ending that's really great as well.
    Would love to see your reactions for those!
    I was spoiled and I still didn't see it coming. I sat there thinking, "wait, there's no time for anything else to happen, the credits are rolling???" I had my guard up the whole time until the letter made both me and Ash let our guards down...devastated.
    Also something to note because I didn't process it at first either, but Lao didn't necessarily kill Ash because of the whole thing with Shorter. Shorter's death started a snowball effect that kept bad blood between them. But the thing that finally pushed Lao to do what he did was Sing. He didn't know that Sing and Ash called off the fight they were supposed to have once everything was over. He thought they were still going to fight and that Sing would definitely lose to Ash and die, so he did the only thing he felt he could do to keep his baby brother safe. That's why Lao says "I won't let you take Sing away" after Ash shot him. He might have also thought that Ash and Sing were going to fight or plan the fight when Sing was giving him Eiji's letter. A lot of people get mad at Lao but as the oldest with a younger sibling with a decent age gap, I would also cut a bitch to save my baby brother. He was operating on the information he had, he didn't know what we all knew. I feel bad for him and all the kids/young people who society/the world has failed. They were all trapped in a cycle of violence.
    Banana Fish has ruined my life y'all...

    "EVERYONE'S GETTING A HAPPY ENDING!"
    **nervous laughter**
    I love that I wasn't the only one that thought Blanca sniped Foxx at first -- but it makes total sense for it to be Dino and the ending with Dino and Ash was perfect. "Burn in hell, Dino," indeed.
    I love that Sing became what Yut Lung needs and that it opens up the possibility for them to work together to help make the situation with Chinatown and Downtown better.
    In the end, I hate the Ash dies, but it somehow seems so fitting -- I was convinced that both Ash and Eiji would die, but we don't get THAT ultimate tragedy, instead all the other players are left to keep moving forward because of Ash.
    That ending scene is just so beautiful and honestly, I hope you all get a chance on Twitch streaming to read the side story "Angel Eyes" and the epilogue "Garden of Light" - both from Volume 19. It's seriously one of the most gorgeous epilogues I've read and it's the perfect final ending for Banana Fish.
    Thanks for the great reactions, y'all! It was great (I won't say fun, hahaha) to re-watch the series with you all! It's literally one of my favorite series and I'm glad you FINALLY got a chance to watch it.

      “Everyone’s getting a happy ending!!” Is a thought I’m sure most of us have had this episode (for better or for worse)
      But I agree. The ending, though traumatic and utterly heart wrenching, is probably (arguably) better than having them both live. As much as it hurts, it’s better for Ash to meet his end this way, and feel solace knowing Eiji is *finally* going somewhere safe, rather than spending the rest of his life on the run, never getting the safety he’s never had. 😩

  • @ladynoluck
    @ladynoluck 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    The ending gives us two things:
    1. That Ash’s instinctual shooting of Lao reconvinced him that this is indeed his mountain to die on, that he can’t return, that he has no softness left to give
    2. That that isn’t true. Ash had lost all his innocence. The series establishes that and how exactly it happened (loss/return of innocence being a main theme/discussion), but Eiji was helping Ash regain his innocence and softness. Right before he was stabbed, he had felt it all return and moved to return the favor to Eiji. It’s just that that innocence returned in the worst moment and dropped his guard like Skip in the first episodes. He thought all his innocence had flickered back out with him shooting Lao, but as he passes away, his face and expression is full of the innocence and softness of a little boy napping in his favorite spot or a cat in a warm sunspot. The librarian didn’t even know to call for help because he was so soft and innocent.
    The ending implies Ash had lost hope that he could be in Eiji’s world in the way he wanted, but at the very end, he was more than good enough to be there, even if he didn’t fully see it in himself.

    traumatic.... I have such mixed feelings about this episode. because it's not a 'bad' ending, it's beautiful and fitting in some ways, but it also rejects other themes introduced. usually I'm a sucker for tragic endings but I still can't truly appreciate this one; it 's so not cathartic and it absolutely COULD have ended with ash going to japan with eiji, or in a bittersweet but hopeful way but with the possibility of future reunion since they're both alive, and that would have also been perfect and fitting so I can't help but feel frustrated. especially since it's also a 'bury your gays'

    I'm so happy I've run through the end of your journey with this series. This manga went on to inspire so much of the BL landscape, but I've never found anything anything in that genre more emotionally resonant than Banana Fish.
    It's been animated and adapted so well on the whole too. While I have my gripes with the timechange and how they handled it, think some of the language in the 80s manga would date it in a more current anime produced and set in the modern day.
    Even so, I'd highly recommend anyone who enjoyed the anime to check out the manga. The art can be a little stiff at times and the language can be very harsh and even insensitive in a modern context. But it's still one of my favourites, happily chilling alongside Hunter x Hunter, Berserk and Punpun on my shelf 😂

    The thing that I most hated was that Lao, of all people, got Ash. Not because of how minor he was as a character, but for his reasons.
    "I'm not gonna let you take Sing away from me". I'm sorry?? Ash wasn't gonna hurt Sing, ever. Sing is the same age as when Ash met Shorter (14), and I believe they could've had something similar.

    In a way, Ash’s death was very similar to Padame Amidala. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it over and over. Ash has been injured much worse than that stab wound and survived. For that stab would to kill him, Ash had to give up on life just like Padame did. He lost his will to live because his first and only real moment of “wow I can get away, I could be happy” is destroyed by the cruel reality of never being able to escape all his enemies. Ash gives up because the only way Eiji and his friends will all truly be safe is if he died because then there will be no one left for them to be used against. Why kill Eiji to hurt Ash if Ash is dead and won’t feel that pain?

    (ALTHOUGH, it's entirely possible that Ash just passed out, the library people will call him an ambulance in time, then he'll pull a Reichenbach and head for Japan to be with Eiji. [ignores manga and huffs copium])

    Banana Fish is one of those anime that you both love up until the very end. That's why it usually has a lot of discussion and lingers with you after it ends. It also makes for some painfully bittersweet rewatches.
    Everyone wants a happy ending. Ash deserved a happy ending. But true to Banana Fishs themes, the world is sometimes cruel and unfortunately his gangster lifestyle caught up to him over a stupid misunderstanding. Let's be real, Ash was not gonna duel Sing. Yut Lungs pettiness on his relationship with Eiji helped get him killed.
    Some say Ash had too much blood on his hand to get off scott free. To that, I point out the kill count most of the major characters have (I'm looking at you Jessics with a grenade 😆) Our story litterally starts out in a warzone with Griffin.
    Banana Fish strength is showcasing the impact one can have in a person's life, no matter their past. Eiji was depressed and lost before he went to America. Ash gave him an adventure and Eiji gained confidence and a sense of purpose. Ash was cold to pretty much everyone beyond Shorter, Skip, and Griffin and even then, he was emotionally distant and detached. Eiji saw and brought out more of the human in him. Weather good or bad, their relationship had rippling effects on everyone around them.
    Agh now I just want to edit Banana Fish videos again 😭

    Lao didn't kill Ash because of Shorters death.
    He was kicked out of the Chinese gang just after Sing told Ash that they would have a fight to the death after they dealt with Dino. Sing also told his guys that Lao had nothing to do with their business anymore. So I assume no one spoke to him since then. For all Lao knew the fight was never called off. He only wanted to protect Sing because he would have definitely died in a serious fight against Ash . There was no revenge involved anymore at this point which makes it even more sad.
    Because of a misunderstanding Sing lost his friend Ash and his family Lao at the same time and at each others hands. It was just pointless and tragic.

    The whole story is like ″Banana Fish″. We were too much into the story, after the beautiful ending, we were terribly sad. It's very much like toxic. So sad that I can't never watch the last episode, but I watch other episodes many times.
    I thought it was happy ending just before the ending. Ash was safe at the last battle but it's very nice misleading. It's probably happy ending for Ash but not for us. 😭

    There’s truly a beauty and nuance to this show which has made it always stand out compared to others, and I really appreciate everyone who reacts and is in the fandom. One of the pros of such a deep and complex show is that the more toxic and pettier people will never even touch it to be able to taint the series I suppose.
    Always a gut wrencher…

    Happy you won't be reading the extras! The epilogue is honestly unecessarily sad. The story is best to leave it at this, without even researching about the mangaka lol. The only exception is the anime staff own take on the ending but it's not necessary either.
    THE SHOW REALLY PLAYED WITH ALL OF US SOOOO MUCH. Thinking Ash will die at the end since the beginning, then Eiji with S2's ED, then Ash, then Eiji, then NO ONE. Fcking story.
    It's nice that Ash wanted to go to Japan and thought he could do that for a bit there. He at least died knowing there is a guy out there who loves him without nothing in return and whose soul is always with him.

    Hi. I am a fan of you and bananafish.😊
    First of all, thank you for watching this story until the last episode. Were you very surprised and saddened by the ending?Even now, I am still in pain to the point of crying, and at the same time, I am fascinated by the beauty of this story.
    Bananafish's original comic serialization is over in about 30 years ago. It was miraculously aired as an anime, but it also ended a few years ago. However, in recent years, events and goods sales are still held every year in japan. In addition, a live-action stage performance was staged last year.Would it be possible to invest in a work that has no prospect of further development in the first place? Yes, this wonderful trajectory is the only thing that was done with the love of the fans.
    If you find bananafish attractive, please show more interest and love it.🥰
    Postscript: I often watch your reaction videos other than bananafish 😉 If possible, please do a reaction video for "Bungo Stray Dogs Wan"! You have been watching until the 3rd season,right?Next year, the broadcast of the 4th season has been decided! "Wan" is a spin-off variety show in which the characters are adorable and minimal. It's very easy to watch because it's short and the number of stories is small. Please!

    Everyone who finished the anime should read "Garden of Light." This manga showed how indescribable and great Eiji's love for Ash is. I can say this manga hurt me more than the ending of the anime. It tackled more realistic aftermath of Ash's passing, and Eiji's trauma and his dying passion for everything eversince Ash died. The ending of Garden of Light put a deeper hole in me when Eiji showed his most treasured Photograph. A portrait of Ash, longingly and hopelessly stares into the sky, sitting by the window of their apartment, entitled "DAWN."

  • @sunnysodapop
    @sunnysodapop ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem isn't Ash dying. He found peace in death. The problem is Sing and Eiji have to live without him...THAT'S THE PROBLEM. If they all at least died...no one would be left to suffer. They'd all be free.

      What am i missing?

    • @Kunoichi4ever4
      @Kunoichi4ever4 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mordredvonumbra154 It doesnt need to be that you are missing anything to be fair, we all have different experiences in life, which makes us all prone to different stories making us weak. I can only confirm what cord this show striked for me, can t speak for anyone else:
      For me, one of the most difficult things in life is accepting that some people stumble, fall, but never get back up. I have friends and family who made some mistakes, got into incorrect friend groups, got incorrect partners, started using substances..and never got back up. Ash here is one of those people, who were just never able to get back up.THAT for me was always hard to stomach, kinda why Twice storyline is also one of my favorites in MHA and his death also always makes me cry.
      Additionally the idea of being loved unconditionally, for me the person who loved me unconditionally was my grandmother who passed away in 2019 so I watched this show quite recently after that, ofc it is a different type of love as depicted here, but it is still the idea of another person accepting you for who you without questions, that 1 person who you actually could call even to bury a body and they d still have your back...that kinda love is depcited in this show, and as a result it triggers me everytime to realize what I lost..

  • @serralinda73
    @serralinda73 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    People get hung up on the idea that Ash might not be dead at the end but I prefer this ending, TBH. From a story perspective, knowing what we know of Ash and his beliefs about himself, he or Eiji had to die. He is certain that violence is an intrinsic part of his life, of his being. Eiji tempted him at the end with that letter but...Lao "proved" him right. Even when everyone considered it all over and done, violence comes for Ash yet again. He could have lived after that stab - we all know he's suffered worse injuries. But he *chooses* to go die in the library rather than going to a hospital. He is totally at peace with his decision and he'd rather be sure Eiji will go on without any violence in his life. Plus, he does feel guilty about all the lives he's taken, justified or not.
    One thing. I'm pretty damn sure Ash could not have gotten on any international flight at this time. He's not only a wanted murderer but also presumed dead. I can't see his passport (if he even has one) getting him past customs. With time, yeah - he could get a new identity.
