To enhance students’ vocabulary related to Geography and review Superlatives
Warm-up and Objective Discussion - Top-Down Technique
The teacher writes "Geography" on the board.
Warm-up questions:
What is your hometown like?
Does it have mountains or beaches? And how is the weather?
Is your city a 'superlative city'? e.g.: the most ...
New strategy - bring pictures with 'mountains', 'beach', 'hills', 'plateaus', etc. - imagery in general
Instruct and Model - Writing first, Speaking afterward
The teacher creates a model and then shows and tells students:
'Rio de Janeiro is a coastal city. It is usually hot and sunny, but very rainy in March. Those born in Brazil say that RJ is the most beautiful city in the world.'
Afterward, elicit from students about their hometowns.
Pronunciation Activity - The sounds r x h
Focus on how it is spoken in different words such as 'very rainy' - My students tend to confuse the sounds h and r
Drilling pronunciation activity: Rio is very rainy in March. - The weather in regions of Europe has been stormy recently. - Rich regions of the world.
High hills in Holland. - My hotel is as hot as my house.
Afterward, mixing them up: Rio has a rich hotel in the hills. - Brazil is home to really rare birds.
Guided Practice - Listening -
Bottom-Up Technique
Ask students to listen and watch the video, referring to the warm-up top-down. Then, listen again while writing down vocabulary that they hear related to the theme 'Geography' and 'Weather' Bottom-Up
Play the video once, open up for group discussion, play it a second time pausing, and/or with subtitles in English if necessary.
Independent Practice - Writing-Speaking
Students will use their smartphones for a quick search about a different city around the world that they would like to visit someday. Then, jot down some ideas and prepare a short presentation about it. If any of the other students have been there or comes from this city, allow interaction among presenters and the other students observing the presentation.
Speaking Activity Idea: Description Chain - Groups divide the description of the city among themselves and where each person will halt the presentation for the next group member to carry on.
Assessment Writing and Post-Writing
Impossible Task: Ask students to come up with the most interesting place on Earth to live. Instruct students to prepare and research at home; aid them during class and guide them thoroughly through what you want, but make sure you leave room for creativity.
Technology Enrichment: Students open Google World View - Street View and give us a tour around the places they’ve chosen.
