Thanks again to Jason from Old Time Parts for the loan of the mower! Looks like it might be the oil sensor on the engine causing the issue when I went on the slope.
Not the sensor causing an issue haha it's the sensor protecting the engine from oil starvation! This is standard across the board - over 30 degrees and you're in the danger zone just not many small engines have a cut off switch.
Oil sensor yes and the fuel pick up isn't in the greatest spot in those tanks. Keep the tank full and a dash more engine oil will sort the stoppages out
It's because the clutch is absolutely crap in them. Everyone I know that has one says the same. It stopped because that one side was digging in. Any Reno / hoc reset you do it'll burn the clutch out and they're not cheap either, done two clutches on my lawn this season.
My guess would be the low oil sensor making the engine cut out. We have Honda engines on our greens rollers and have the same issue until the oil gets hot or the oil sump is completely full
In Wa where its made, we always pronounce it M-E-Y. It is also considered good form to put the catcher or a milk crate under the handle when you lean it back, so oil does not flood the cylinder. We also fill the oil to overflowing, not the full mark on the dipstick, no more cut outs. You mowed the correct way across the slope too, by keeping the uncut side at the lower side it lifts the mower up and stops the mower leaning over and scalping on that edge.
Yep spot on about when leaning back, I also put the engine into “Top dead centre “ position with the engine switched off and pull slowly on the pull cord to find the sweet spot…a good way to ensure the oil doesn’t go where it shouldn’t when leaning right back 🙂
Kikuyu, wth its requirement for very frequent mowing, is a perfect grass for a robot mower. I have an Aussie Moebot, which I run almost daily in summer. It is set to run from 4 hrs after sunrise (or 25C, whichever comes first) until 3.30pm (or 32C, again whichever coms first). It shaves a tiny bit off the top, thus avoiding the scalping, and as I've programmed it to stop at 32C it can avoid mowing we the lawn is stressed (this I all donein the app and completely user programmable). OK it doesn't do stripes, and its lowest setting is 25mm but for what it is I'm stoked! Love your vids tho I'm learning a lot about lawn care!
The mey is great and you have the optional split rear roller like a $800 upgrade. Love them should try the 26inch one. Made here in Western Australia down in Mandurah. Lovey bit of kit great review ben.
Followed your steps for my back lawn mate and it’s turning out a treat. We do get a lot more rain in Ballarat so a bit of top dressing and re seeding to be done. Keep up the great work
When it’s on a slope, the oil shifts in the crank case and the engine thinks there is no oil so switches off. It’s a standard feature on those types of engines. There is a low oil sensor that causes the engine to switch off in case off low oil.
Glad I'm not the only one who has accidentally sprayed a patch of lawn, mine was a puncture in my little spray bottle I didn't notice and it was spraying everywhere and then i panicked and put it on my driveway but it was still spewing onto my grass, 2 1/2 weeks and its slowly coming back..
Throw LI700 in with Gly, will limit drift & improve efficacy will also help with harder to kill weeds. Throw a bit of dicamba in with also help with large broadleaf etc also. 👍 Keep up good work I’m enjoying watching.
It's cutting out due to the low oil sensor not being happy with the angle, try adding some oil, maybe even over fill it a little and you should be sweet.
What sorta slope we talking :o My old man has a 30° slope on his backyard, I use a Briggs & Stratton on that without any issues. I start at the top and snake down the hill. Maybe the oil sensors are mounted in a different position in the Hondas?
Same here with my McLane. Steep hills cut the motor out when the carburetor side is below the fuel tank. Works perfectly on level ground. Will try to sneak in a little more oil.
Mate there is a spanner that comes with it and a cam nut on the front roller for adjusting the level to give a square cut, there is also a cam nut on the back roller
What a beast! Gutted on the over spray. Might be time to set up a trailer to carry all the tools quickly around the property, maybe a sponsor could help out with pro racks, nice ramps on to trailer for the reels, cheers
Id imagine its hard to mow more often now that you have all that land to maintain on top of the yard by the house. Lots of things that need to get done. My front yard is sloped as well, I have to mow diagonals to make the cylinder mower work.
Solid unit that mower mate great colour too, the old protea is a heavy unit too cuts at a true height sure to its weight, man I’m mowing every 2 days at the moment just to stay on top of it, the old rye has held up good this summer as hasn’t been that hot down my way just raised the height a bit, that kikuyu looks smick mate 👍🏼, u just a perfectionist 😂
If you are on a sloping block, is it better to go up and down or left right with a cylinder mower. Dont wanna scalp the crap out of it by going the wrong way lol.
Would love a video about the best value reel mower in Australia. I want to get a small part of the lawn to a golf green level of quality and putt on it. Would love to know from you recommendations of great value reel mowers.
90% chance thats the oil alert on the honda causing the cut out, doesn't look steep enough for a fuel cut out from the carby, looks like a clean cut tho, old time parts isnt far from me, but i couldn't warrant a full cylinder mower on 50m2 of zoyzia
Ben, long time follower but can you please start on your par 3 and green! Maintenance on Kik and basic mowing only cuts it for so long on a lawn maintenance channel 😅.
We just bought a new house, I accidentally killed a large 5x5m section of grass. I've given it about a month, just regular watering and it hasn't changed. What should I do? cut it as low as I can, get some seed and top soil?
Hey Ben, I have a weird one with my Kik, each year when I do a Reno on it I can make it about 2 months before it gets all thatchy and I can't low mow any more and need to just progressively start raising cut height which sucks. Any ideas? Does my Reno scalp need to be q hell of a lot more aggressive?
I have kikuyu, growing well at moment but there’s always a patch of clover in a small 1x1m area. I’ve done weed and feed but still there. Doesn’t bother me after mowing as it’s a nice uniform green but I wish the kikuyu would grow over that clover. Any ideas?
Plug it. Cut out the one metre and put in some grass from other parts of your lawn. I was fighting a endless battle with paspalum so I just cut it out and sod it. Lucky for me I had sod the same as my grass.
The fuel tank gravity feeds the carby, at that angle, if you don't have much fuel in the tank, the level drops away from the outlet and doesn't go into the engine. If you do the bottom of the slope first with a full tank you shouldn't have a problem.
