Brilliant vlog Lee. Not easy to get include the miners strike of 84, the sad decline of city centers yet show the small businesses that still hang on in there producing amazing food and of course the fantastic work your sister & her friends do for charities. Everyone in this vlog was just a pure pleasure to watch. One of your best to date for me. 💜💜💜💜💜Xxxxx
Great to see your sis after so long Lee, your friend is a natural in front of the camera and the lady in the shop is an absolute star. Great vid x

Every high street looks the same now, greggs, subway, betfred or ladbrokes, vape shops, tanning salons, Turkish barbers, funeral directors and endless charity shops.
We have been divided and conquered......no community spirit anymore....pubs and church, markets local independent shops......encouraged this. WE ARE TO BLAME by allowing it to happen. Not attending Council meetings to oppose diabolical motions that destroyed our local communities...😢
Hi Lee, I was a miner from Yorkshire, and yes, sadly, there are still family's freinds neighbours who to this day still do not speak or associate with each other the strike cut deep. Thanks for the vlog great as usual.
6:20 *Thousands of Illegal Immigrants does not help, put up in 4 Star Hotels with Free Food and Heating on full Blast at 80° F to be **_Happy_** from where they have come from !*
High council rents, high energy prices, high fuel prices, high taxes. That’s what I believe is killing the high street. Places abroad are still thriving, so on line is not wholly to blame but maybe a little. People can’t spend if all their money is going on keeping warm, high rents and mortgages and a bit of food.
The decline of our town is not entirely due to internet shopping. The economy is far worse than we are being led to believe meaning large department stores & local businesses have been shutting down at an alarming rate. It’s the chicken & egg scenario, as the towns have less & less to attract shoppers many that would prefer to shop in person are not incentivised to visit boarded up premises with a very limited choice. The cost of parking is also another issue & the reduction in bus services. This in turn is beneficial to online shopping, which is exactly what TPTB want. They want us living in 15min cities & due to the ever increasing costs of owning a vehicle, tax, insurance, fuel, parking people are now weighing up the finances before driving into towns. It’s all deliberate. The economy has been in the doldrums for years & continuing inflation & currency debasement is causing many people to struggle. Sorry to say it’s only going to get worse. Sorry to be a prophet of doom, it’s very sad.
Heard this a couple of weeks ago . '' I'm not going to pay three pounds to park , I'm going to the Trafford Centre '' So it seems fuel and time have no value .
Loved your video Lee . Your friend is brilliant, loved his stories of yiu when you were younger . Your sister is lovely and what a wonderful shop for a brilliant cause . More videos like this please x x
I reckon it has a lot to do with all these huge out of town retail parks and shopping centres as well..... I personally love having a mooch around the smaller towns and supporting the local independent businesses. Morley where I live is still a thriving little town, but its sad to see so many towns in decline 😢
It's not just England lee , it's happening here in Australia aswell . Hardly any regional banks , markets are dying , but here the regions are the fastest growing areas in Australia.
I started as an Electrical Apprentice in 1985 just after the strike. British Coal provided a first class apprenticeship and free degree level education. I worked my way up into mining management and worked in both Notts and Yorkshire mines until 2013. 20 years after the strike there were still the hardliners who held grudges after the strike but we had Yorkshire and North East lads working in Notts mines and Notts men who had transferred to Yorkshire mines. Mansfield Town Centre died with the closure of the mines. In the 80's it had a thriving market and Friday and Saturday nights rivaled anywhere else in the UK. The high wages available to the relatively young people fueled the nightlife, that doesn't exist anymore. The mining and manufacturing jobs disappeared as Thatcher moved the economy to be dominated by London and the Financial Services sector.
I think most towns are like this and think the council, landlords, the pandemic, online shopping are all to blame. I went to a new retail park on the outskirts of Leeds near Garforth called 'The Springs' and the retailer 'Shoezone' was closing. I asked the staff why and was told that the rent was rising too much to make it financially viable. The rent was going to be £300,000 per annum.
Great video, good to meet Sandra and Rich. Certainly Amazon and on-line shopping has caused some shops to close but when it's difficult or expensive to park that puts people off. In many cases rents are too high for the present turnover of the shops not to mention the increased cost of staff. I noticed lots of double yellow lines, not always good. Pedestrianisation can kill the heart of the town.
Great video Lee sounds like you guys had some fun over the years, I think it's a bit of everything councils, online shopping & supermarkets selling everything. Good grief I've just seen an advert for a Ford capri EV on TV for the 1st time 😮🤢 nice one Lee 👍
It is the same thing here in the US Lee. Next trip here take a deeper look at how towns, cities and communities have taken a dive. People have lost their jobs. Find a local willing to talk to you when you go to these places. That will be an assignment you can do next time you come here to the US.
Even before the internet banks were reducing services available in the local branch. I can remember in the early 90s a sign in the window of a bank advertising the mortgage rate. So i went in to get more info. Only to be given a phone number for the call centre. I couldn't believe it.
Wow Mansfield is looking empty. I was there approximately 15 years ago when I was at a family gathering at a Hostel for a weekend in Nottingham. We went to Mansfield well the outer bit to a pub for a pub lunch. Looks a lot more empty than back then. Still the shots you took of the closed shops ect were a little artsy looking. I do hope this town/city get back on it's feet. The Breakfast looked delicious both of them and your sister's shop looks a lot like the 2nd hand shops we have in town in Canada. So MacMaster you were a Chiatt disturber in school eh. I can relate sort of lol. I had time to waste so I didn't really feel I was wasting my time watching this video. I did get a chuckle cheers mate
I worked in "Ladies Fashion" darling, as soon as the internet hit, the old names were in trouble. As a Courier for a huge fashion firm with their own stores and franchises in Debenhams I talked to everyone from top to bottom in that world and saw from the work I did which way the High Street was going. The warehouses in MK and Northampton were sending out 4000 garments a week online but two thirds were coming back, they had to be processed as in steamed labeled and put back into stock.
It's not online shopping. If you opened a website or shop on ebay selling stuff, you will be outpriced and outsupplied by the large corporations. Bricks and mortar shops still exist but generally owned by corporations, hospitality chains ... leveraged up to the eyeballs with debt and private equity commitments. (Ever wonder why coffee cost £4+ and 2-3 course meals costs £40+ pp these days??) It's not the council, although their inefficiency and lack of vision isn't helping. All it boils down to is money that is supposed to circulate in the economy ends up with the very rich (think landlords, banks and shareholders) and they spend very little of it back into the economy, except for assets such as property (higher rent & house prices) and overpriced luxury goods. Money for the working & middle classes dries up, small businesses shut shop due to lack of customers, people lose jobs, the spiral of recession ... TL;DR ... the rich get richer, the poorer get poorer!
Mansfield looks thriving compared to Bradford! I have a coffee shop in Bradford, since covid things have been tough with people working from home resulting in less footfall, come April though with a rise in wage and NI I’m not really sure what the future holds for my coffee shop and many other small business.
We often used to go to the market in Bury St Edmunds which was always very good. We went this year and a lot of the stalls had gone, we were very disappointed.
Same as most other Towns...Subsidised Business Rates for the likes of Asda, Tesco, Aldi etc, in "Out of Town" Shopping Parks with free parking, while the small independent local Town Centre businesses get clobbered by business rates.
Wow Lee, loved your vlog. I live in Eccles where the Eccles cakes originated and the town has shut down more or less exactly like your home town ….absolutely shocking and shameful. Your sister is lovely and helping a good cause, god love her. Thanks for sharing 👍🎄🎄
Our town centre is the same, but then you can't get your hair cut online, tattooes or nails done so they will survive and charity shops, pawn shops, the secondhand media type places also do. Watching the delivery vans up and down our road and taking in parcels for our neighbours busy working before Christmas. Nice to see Sandra, I expect she needs a guard dog in her shop.
loved this mate.. Im Mansfield born and bred but currently living 34 miles north with the wife. So many memories, Ive not been into the town centre for many years so it is very sad to see.. It was thriving wasn't it when we went to school (sherwood hall for me lol). I remember there bustling markets, greengrocers and we even had all the banks.. hsbc then tsb on the other side. I appreciate this video as it's great for folks like me who grew up here but aren't there now. Take care
Further to that question. Here is one. Should the people of the Great Britain inc N. Ireland. Should the people have more say where money is spent by the councils and government. Would people agree we are worse off now than 20 years ago? All we see is boom and bust and repeat. Have we got the wrong people running our countries. Maybe not wrong prime minister but wrong people in wrong ministerial jobs.
Your stories and sister and co made the vid for this one! They was all awesome next time I'm in Mansfield I'd buy that nemesis statue that was in the window (if it's still there though off to Drayton Manor this weekend for the little ones trip and then back to the grind).
Out of town shopping parks with FREE parking. That is one of the main reasons town centres die, I see it all over the place. The shop that only takes cash is a shame, but locals would know. As long as there is one cashpoint near by they would have been ok. But who knows. I won't shop in out of town shopping parks. No character and overpriced stuff that most of us don't need.
Hi Lee as per usual just watching your uploads and I totally agree with you in regards to shops and how life used to be it's so upsetting how online things have destroyed the retail industry I'd much prefer going to a shop than going online for anything Amazon in my opinion is one thing that's taking a lot from individual retailers
@ many pub owners told me that customer numbers dived.

Less people smoke, it's just the cost of drinking has increased beyond what people used to afford plus people drink at home more as they have Netflix and massive televisions. Peoples tastes have changed and old guard of being down the boozer every night have passed away now.
I put it down to the council. I come from Wigan which was also a vibrant market town and it has been ruined and we are being forced into shopping online.
Do a tour of Peterborough,Market gone now flats in town centre,No public toilets,John Lewis gone shortly after a £20 odd millions refurb ,Gambling shops vape shops .On the market closing went on to have wooden purpose built stalls like big sheds ,But the buildings were not ready on time for the crossover so council had to pay the loss to the stall holder until they were ready ,You mentioned Beales we had one they had a ex co op store but they only needed the ground floor but the council wanted them to pay for the first floor also but they said no and so they left ,And so it goes on .
I have never had a smoke in my life and l used to loathe the next day fag smell on a my clothes. Last June l spent in Jerez, wow, everybody (multi-generational) smokes and.......drinks....& l realised l missed all that, people just having a good time.
I don't understand pub or club life. Is the purpose to meet people? To tell stories? Make new friends? To get drunk? I've never tasted beer, so I've never visited pubs or clubs. Dancing always seemed silly to me.
On the plus side people could actually taste what they were eating. Before I get boos for that comment I am an ex smoker and having to eat without lighting up inbetween each course made me realise what I was missing, taste wise. I think the lengths they are going to now are extreme and if the Government allows the selling of cigarettes, at least let smokers have areas in Pubs they can smoke if it doesn't affect other diners.😮
Hi Lee I would say it is your local council and how they are using the council tax money not very well looking at that vlog . Barnsley have spent our money wisely the market and town is very busy thriving in fact, people coming from outside of my area new shops, bars, opening. But i also think that online shopping and carparking in towns as a big impact aswell.
Charity shops how they should be, full of bargains to rummage through the goods, not like some of the "fashion store" charity shops. Happy New Year to you all xx
In America, they have re- purposed shopping malls. They have converted shops to single occupancy starter apartments. There is a demand for housing and building entrepreneurs have been creative. Councils & Govts have to be business friendly and work with SMEs and entrepreneurs.
And then all the banks ran away so they could make even bigger profits out of doing less for us. I wonder where cash traders keep their money safe overnight now?
Nice video Lee. Maybe a small reversal of this decline in this area is Idlewells Indoor Market in Sutton in Ashfield . Come and see the different little independant shops doing well and its like the good old days !
Thanks Lee a interesting video on Mansfield, it is a shame it had declined so much..In the Good old days England was the power house of the world. The problem today, it is due to so many people now are far to Greedy, " Greed is Destroying the World " It was nice to meet your lovely sister Sandra, she is so much like your Dear Mum. 👍 Au
The cost of living crisis as caused the decline of towns in the uk 🤯🤯

Technology has been the biggest driver not people's lack of money. People have money they just spend it on other things. Not everyone is broke come on.
Wife ordered a new bed, delivery April/May 2025. The one in the shop was "display only". Same with the new cooker, you can have it delivered in 7 days.
❤In my opinion it’s happening all over the world you now have mega shopping centres and all the big stores eg Costcos and yes you can get anything online for a better price I live in a country town in NZ(Murupara) and only have really one small 4 square so the decline is everywhere but hey you continue your support of the local community and shops as the council won’t 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
High streets and markets are full of phone shops and barbers that you don't see many people going in nor out. I will leave the rest up to people's imagination
Lee I’m from Oxford and Oxford city centre now is full of coffee shops eateries gift shops for students and student accommodation the shopping and markets have all gone including BHS Debenhams ect. But if your hungry or thirsty as long as your loaded you can’t go wrong. Even are Odeon cinemas are going to make room for more student accommodation. It’s becoming a joke. We got no choice but to buy on line and then you get ripped off or your items you order don’t arrive but the money comes out your bank. Anyway happy new year
Great video Lee it’s the same everywhere rent and rates going through the roof,I think is the main reason with the internet not helping and the cost off living, plus it’s going to get worse if this grocery tax thing, comes in and this government saying it not going to tax the public what a load of 💩👍👍
We are turning into a third world country and this present Labour government are speeding up the process
Brilliant vlog Lee. Every high street looks the same now, greggs, subway, betfred or ladbrokes, vape shops, tanning salons, Turkish barbers, funeral directors and endless charity shops.
Don't forget the cheap makeup and handbag stores
Not where I live our shopping centre is on dead malls despite having the largest Tesco Extra.
Great vlog Lee, mate from school and your sister was a blast m8, keep up the good work.
You and your schoolmate certainly brought some fun to the run down town 😂- one of the best vids so far, and well done to your sister and her helper!😄

Parking charges and third party parking companies are to blame. You have to jump through lots of hoops to access towns and park cars

I would say it is your local council and how they are using the council tax money not very well looking at that vlog . Barnsley have spent our money wisely the market and town is very busy thriving in fact, people coming from outside of my area new shops, bars, opening.
But i also think that online shopping and carparking in towns as a big impact aswell.
Jack of all hearts do a brilliant job well done sandy x
Lack of industry is the main reason ❤
Charity shops how they should be, full of bargains to rummage through the goods, not like some of the "fashion store" charity shops. Happy New Year to you all xx
Business rates through the roof
In America, they have re- purposed shopping malls. They have converted shops to single occupancy starter apartments. There is a demand for housing and building entrepreneurs have been creative. Councils & Govts have to be business friendly and work with SMEs and entrepreneurs.
And they have also painted murals harking back to the good old days on the disused shop fronts.
Internet and the fact that pubs have no atmosphere now due to the smoking ban and of course the cost!!!!
And then all the banks ran away so they could make even bigger profits out of doing less for us. I wonder where cash traders keep their money safe overnight now?
Great video Lee, nice French Mastiff.
It's great seeing all your old friends ❤🎉
The best MacMasters i have ever viewed real town real people real local accents and most believable
Wife ordered a new bed, delivery April/May 2025. The one in the shop was "display only". Same with the new cooker, you can have it delivered in 7 days.
This was a great vlog ! You must make your pal, Brownie a regular on the channel - he's a good laugh.
