7:29 - ooh, a severe underestimation of "kindness as a superpower" idea (to quote Kenneth Branagh when he directed Cinderella). - e.g. Captain America, Katniss Everdeen, Regina Mills, Leslie Knope, Barry Allen, Supergirl, etc :) The higher the standard the character holds himself/herself up to, the more tragic the flaw becomes (it's much more compelling than watching an antihero laze about). The most self-sacrificing heroes can have the most surprising pasts...

To piggy back off of where the emphasis should be at with characters and what makes us care about what a show; I listened to this interview with Sam Esmail and he said: "we lean on plot too much. We don't remember plot, we remember characters. We remember who they are, what they're about and the kind of choices they make, bad or good, and that will ultimately resonate more than the sequence of events that happen on the screen." Discipline and diligence is the one of the biggest key ingredients to "making it." Marvel in general is doing very very well, especially now, but I think this came out right around Fantastic Four which crashed and burned without a doubt. Then the next year Batman Vs Superman, Suicide Squad, and them Justice League... I think he's right that many superhero movies fail due to feeling like a collage of action scenes chosen by a committee. On the other hand, I see movies like Wonder Woman and Infinity War resonating more due to their emphasis on a deep emotional core, something I've found in just about every story I love.
He also said people have 10 min attention spans and so long-form storytelling is suffering, yet people will binge watch 5 hours of a Netflix or Hulu series in one sitting.
I thought Cap & Tony in Civil War were quite interesting. I actually find Cap more interesting as the movies progress. First one was very boring indeed. Before facing off in the final act. Cap: "he is my friend." Tony: "So was I." Me:" noooo." I felt that.

The "Heat before Heat," he is referring to is the pilot for the TV series called "LA takedown." Also by Michael Mann, yeah it was going to be a tv series before it became a film. The pilot didn't do well, but the material was good.
The only thing I disagree with is why superhero he feels that superhero movies are now failing. They succeed because they have good stories and allowed us some escape. Those behind the films of the last few years are so concerned with injecting the ideology of Diversity Inclusion and Equity, that telling a good story no longer matters. The majority of moviegoers can see the propaganda saturating these products, and are not giving these films their time, or their money.
I may have made this comment before, but I have no interest in writing a screenplay at this point. I am working on a genre novel and am uninterested in writing to be adapted. THAT SAID, I keep coming back to this channel - and interviews with Peter, in particular - because I find it really helps me lock into some essentials and refocus on what I am trying to write and how I am going to accomplish that.

I understand what he's talking about and I agree for the most part, but the Super Hero genre crashing and burning? I think he needs to check the box offices again. In fact, the reason we keep getting more of it is because of its huge success. While the writing and stories being told aren't glamorous by any means, the majority of the population doesn't care. Give them mindless action scenes and Superheroes going at it with villains and it will sell. As made apparent by the recent DC films. They were critically ill-received, and the stories have been atrocious, but that didn't stop them from making bank at the box office.

The TV series hero will never heal, he'll just keep bleeding. Thank you -- now I know to never start a new TV series, because movies are the only place I'll get a character arc or satisfying ending. What about miniseries, if you want something longer than a 2 hour story? Miniseries might be the perfect in-between child of the two.
I have a question. I've had this story I've been trying to write for quite a while now. I've tried writing it as a film script, a tv script, and a graphic novel script. Even now, I'm trying to write it as a novel. I don't want to abandon this story, because I can tell there is an incredible amount of potential. But no matter how many times I build and rebuild the characters and even the core plot, I just can't get it to work. Do you have any advice on what I can do to figure out just what is going wrong? I also thought you should know I've been trying to write this story since around the year 2008; and I just can't seem to get it out of my head.
I would say leave it alone for some time. Don't think about it, don't touch it, don't rewrite it. After doing a few other projects come back to it with a fresh perspective. That might just work.
Nicole Harris Then I would suggest bringing in some new eyes into the project. Ask someone you trust and who's opinion you respect to look over the story. Speaking from experience that will help a lot.

This buy is not a writer, he's a self-promoter. He is, to writing, what Donald Trump is to, well, basically everything. No professional screenwriting credits that I can find. This interview is a waste of an interview.
Judi Christopher he didn't say it was impossible, just rare, and I agree. I can't tell you how many times I've been watching something or reading something with a lead character I could tell was written by the opposite sex. It doesn't feel as authentic and can stand out. That doesn't mean, like he also says in this interview, that the story can't be good because of that, but that it might not feel as authentic. there are no perfect stories, we just strive for dining the best we can though. I think it's really great you write amazing make character's!
afrosoul4eva I think you're misunderstanding what he's saying, which I interpret to be that Hollywood is more interested in genre than content at the moment. When I went to watch Rogue One, every single trailer was for a Superhero film. Every single one! It's all about money, and they know that kids will badger the hell out of their parents to go and watch anything superheroish, as kids couldn't give a rat's arse about content; they want action sequences, which is what these films are a sequence of. I have no problem with action films, as long as there's something more to them other than continuous explosions and fighting.

Nicole Harris It has happened to me at least twice in the past few months. I have great stories, amazing characters. I just can't take those characters to the end of the story. It's such a frustrating process!

This buy is not a writer, he's a self-promoter. He is, to writing, what Donald Trump is to, well, basically everything. No professional screenwriting credits that I can find. This interview is a waste of an interview.

Judi Christopher he didn't say it was impossible, just rare, and I agree. I can't tell you how many times I've been watching something or reading something with a lead character I could tell was written by the opposite sex. It doesn't feel as authentic and can stand out. That doesn't mean, like he also says in this interview, that the story can't be good because of that, but that it might not feel as authentic. there are no perfect stories, we just strive for dining the best we can though. I think it's really great you write amazing make character's!

afrosoul4eva I think you're misunderstanding what he's saying, which I interpret to be that Hollywood is more interested in genre than content at the moment. When I went to watch Rogue One, every single trailer was for a Superhero film. Every single one! It's all about money, and they know that kids will badger the hell out of their parents to go and watch anything superheroish, as kids couldn't give a rat's arse about content; they want action sequences, which is what these films are a sequence of. I have no problem with action films, as long as there's something more to them other than continuous explosions and fighting.
