Solo Bear Hunt and Growing Food in the Wilderness

- This week on the homestead, I harvest a black bear, plant the vegetable garden and clean out the root cellar, composting the leftover potatoes and carrots. Not included in this video (but will be next week) is significant progress building the chicken coop.

FYI, for those commenting on the why of the bear kill - bear is a important natural, sustainable wild meat and provides more essential fat than any other wild animal. It’s also my favourite meat.

I, for one, wish you would show the whole hunt. We don't need to hide where our food comes from. Not that you're hiding anything in particular. We all know where meat comes from, non hunters need to chill out. Especially if they eat meat.
You do out of necessity not out of frivolity. Why is that so hard to understand? Perhaps they never knew what hunger was?

Never saw carrots stored in a bucket until I saw one of your previous videos. It worked to perfection. I loved the fruit trees in bloom. I loved the footage of the owls.They were beautiful. It looked like the babies were having mice for lunch. I always love seeing Cali too. Congratulations on the bear hunt. It looked like a healthy one.

That is the most whimsical looking chicken coop I've ever seen - like a gypsy caravan or an elf's house. Love it. When you get grandkids, they will want to evict the chickens and take it over for themselves!

Bobblehead Homestead had an owl fly into his coop at dusk waiting for chickens to come home 🤣 but he caught him with a net & released him out side.
I had forgotten about the metal beams holding up the cabin’s columns! I feel like this is the first time we’ve seen you loosen them but I’m not sure, pretty good future proofing. Congrats on your successful hunt, have a good weekend and take care!

Congratulations on the bear harvest. Have you ever considered using a kids plastic toboggan to help get your harvests out of the woods? I've hunted miles off the roads and trails, and used them often, they make the task much easier. Thanks for sharing your experiences...
He does have something similar, I've seen him use it.
golden retriever love carrots. My brother had a golden when he passed away and the dog was tken by his best friend. It still lives almost more than 10 years..

Congrats on the bear harvest! It my and my wife's dream do do what you're doing in terms of food. Still a ways out from truly being able to do it though since we rent. But once we retire in 5-6 years it'll be full swing.

Where did you get that plaid jacket, Shawn? I hate using camo up here in Alaska, after five years in combat in jungle camo in Central America. Plaid is my favorite for hunting meat for the table.
Congrats on that bear-that’s great tablefare! I’m heading out next week into a canyon by the homestead. We always seem a few weeks later than you folks in eastern Canada. Our ADFG office doesn’t even start counting bears until the 15th of May. 😂🐻🐻🐻🐻

Great bear harvest and the garden is truly amazing. You are dialed in like many wish they could be. “Wilderness icon” and I do not use that term lightly. Amazing.
Shawn Shawn go ahead and put the potatoes in the ground somewhere and just let them they will grow back year after year. I realize you don’t want to eat them because of your diet intake changes but if times really get hard at least you will have an optional food source.👍

Hey Shawn, Nova Scotia proposed a spring Bear pilot project this year, but based on feedback, unfortunately, it won't be established at this time.

With Predators around I put 2x3x5ft fencing on top of my chicken run along with electric fencing to keep the coyotes and raccoons out

Osos en primavera?. Despues de la invernada están delgados aún no?. Y otra cosa, es mi opinión vale?; una dieta con tanta carne roja no es buena para la salud; verduras, hortalizas, tuberculos, legumbres y frutas se pueden combinar con algo de carne en guisos y estofados, pero ya no será únicamente carne. Vuelvo a decir que es una opinión. Al ser española y vivir en la costa mediterrane nuestra alimentación incluy carne claro, pero tambien muchas legumbres (proteina vegetal), hortalizas, pescado de mar y fruta muuuucha fruta 😉. Cali sigue siendo un amor ❤.
En lo de la comida rápida, refrescos etc. etc... tienes toda la razón. Desgraciadamente esa "moda" por decirlo así, se ha exttendido tambien en España; pero los "viejos, viejos" aún seguimos apegados a las viejas costumbres y seguimos las costumbres culinariarias de nuestros antepasados, es decir,: Dieta Mediterranea sin grasas animales y con AOVE de calidad siempre. De todos modos ten en cuenta que sólo he dado mi opinión desde el respeto. No volveré a comentar. Gracias.@@Simon-talks

Wow what a bear! The owls are so cute. I know they will try to get the chickens but I know your pen will be so thought out. The red cardinal was pretty too. I sit outside and I have 2 and sometimes 3 cardinals come to watch me and 2 bluejays. They share the same tree and they all take a bird bath on the puddle next to the tree. Its so cute. Nothing like fresh bear fat for weather proofing the footwear. One thing you're missing in your garden are some of those fairy huts. Take a tree stump and turn it into one of those fairy houses.

Do you know that cooking potatoes and cooling them, before heating again makes them starch resistant? This means you get all the nutrients without most of the starch. Don't waste your beautiful potatoes.

Home grown potatoes wont kill you shawn. Our ancestors lived on root veggies and meat.

Am thinking if you don't use the chicken coop for chickens it would be a grand little work shop for you or your wife or even to store things in it !!!

Not sure if you can find these or not, but there's something called PEWS (platoon early warning system) and Maid/Miles (seismic and magnetic activity) that you might be able to set out to warn of people or animals intruding. Maybe Army/Military Supply stores? PEWS at least should be cheap

So why suddenly you decided to not eat potatoes and carrots? Is it because have started AG1? I’ve been using it for a while now but still eat potatoes and carrots. Nothing better then a baked potato with our bbq’d steak. Sometimes I wrap up sliced carrots and potatoes and onion, salt &pepper and some margarine in tin foil to go with a bbq’d steak.
