    I like the long videos. Your narrative is informative and helpful. Thanks for making these videos. And hey, whoever owns the amp knows they're getting their money's worth.

    I definitely enjoy the multi part long form videos, especially on Marshall Jubilee Wombats! I had an original 1987 50 watt Jubilee Wombat combo, bought it new. It was a great amp. Wish I still had it. Please keep making the long form multi part videos.

    LOL, At the 16:55 mark you comment that "This is fascinating stuff".
    For myself it really is! For about a Decade I worked as an Aircraft Instrument Technician, it was one of the best jobs I'd ever had back then. Sadly the pay wasn't enough to support our family and I moved on to greener pastures.
    I do however miss overhauling Altimeters and the older capacitance meter fuel gauges, either that or I miss the 1990s as compared to current times.

    Very informative video.
    Your right about the Fender Acoustasonic Jazzmaster advertising drive. Here in the UK it’s coming at us from all directions over the last couple of days and even Normans rare guitars have joined in by featuring one as guitar of the day. £1650 approx $2000 here is very expensive. Be interesting if Fender are still manufacturing them in 5 or 10 years?

    Another option to clean things like this is pure acetone, it's often used in labs for degrease things. Depends on the costs and circumstances I suppose (they cost more or less the same). Just be careful with storage (fire hazard) and plastics (isopropyl can dissolve some soft plastics, acetone is stronger at that).

    Wombat! Really enjoy your videos. I would have burns all over my fingers trying to maneuver a soldering iron in those tight spots.

  • @goodun2974
    @goodun2974 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 36:17, it's not just the temperature differential that prevented the solder ball from sticking to the base of the capacitor terminal ---- the rivet (note the cross head pattern indented into it) that holds the solder terminal to the capacitor is probably aluminum and won't accept solder even if it's sufficiently heated. I have seen these riveted connections fail ---- loosen, or develop oxidation between the contact points ---- on old Nichicon filter caps; which is another reason to be careful not to put tension on the terminals when installing new caps. A little looping in the ground wire, to provide a flexure point, is a good idea.
    I'd be curious if the rivets in the original Marshall caps will accept solder ---- the way they are riveted suggests they are a copper-based alloy.

    Wombat, Brought my 87 silver jubilee to a tech today for a check up and re tube. I asked if he wanted too have a look if the caps needed changing he didn't think it was needed but watching your videos I now think it would probably be a good idea.
    I now wonder, will my amp need re biassing after replacing the filter caps?

    Wambat! New Subscriber. Really enjoying the long format videos. I code from home and have been streaming your channel on the TV in my office all week.
    Do you have a Patreon site and have you considered any live stream repairs?
    I enjoy watching Brad's Guitar Garage streams that he posts to TH-cam. Although, I do not do Facebook so I don't get to join them live.
    Also, I am sure you have heard this before, but as a huge Rush fan going back to early 80's you sound hauntingly familiar to Neil Peart. Kinda freaked me out at first but but it's my issue and I'm dealing with it. :)
    Thanks for sharing you knowledge.

    • @PsionicAudio
      @PsionicAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't looked into the Patreon thing, as this channel is advertising for my amp repair services, rather than being an actual business itself.
      Between the physical placement of my computer and the bench and my need for new glasses, I think a livestream repair would be farcical.
      But I've considered a live chat where I answer questions (and can have the computer closer). I don't know if people would be interested.
      I've heard the Peart comparison before, and I'm flattered. I much prefer that to "the dog on Family Guy" (though in fairness I've never seen the show). I wish any vocal similarities to Peart translated into similar timing...

    Lyle, great and informative video, always looking to improve my soldering technique. I notice you don't use a separate flux yet your solder flows beautifully. What type or brand of solder do you use and is it a rosin core? Wombat - Thanks

      Thanks Kent. Kester Sn60Pb40 .031”

  • @goodun2974
    @goodun2974 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You do enough work on PCB amps that I would think you'd invest in a vacuum-pump solder-sucker system. As for solder-wick, Chem-wick and the like, to the best of my knowledge all solder-wick has flux on/in it, BUT, with so much off-brand electronics supplies and soldering accessories coming from Asia nowadays,, the quality and chemical makeup of the flux might vary (formulated mostly for lead-free solder perhaps?), and even quality, name-brand solder-wick can oxidize as it ages, and work poorly. ( If it turns reddish brown, it's probably no good). Hey Lyle, do you have a favorite brand of flux? I'm still working with an old plastic jar of Kester rosin that looks like brown Vaseline and smells like pine trees.

    Wombat! Just did the caps in my 2204 from 1990. Didn't do the ground check though :-(

  • @goodun2974
    @goodun2974 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 12:40, they used black-painted or anodized nuts inside the amp, as a ground point?! Very bad form. Or, was that some type of thread-locking compound or lacquer compound painted on the nut afterwards, to be similar to Loctite? My experience has been that some Glyptol-like thread-locking compounds used in Asian-made electronics cause corrosion when exposed to the heat generated by tubes. A somewhat extreme case in point being some Hurricane moniblock hifi amplifiers with (8) 6550 output tubes that I have repaired for a crazy audiophile....
