F the scammys is right. However this is what they want to be performing right now. It gives people hope and happiness and they look happy performing it. Literally 3 English songs the past year, when they also had two Korean albums in the last year and a half, hardly equates to being in danger of losing themselves. I know you didn’t say you didn’t like it, so definitely not holding anything against you, but after this past weekend hearing more people than necessary saying they were losing themselves was annoying. You are just saying you hope they don’t in order to appeal to that farce of an awards show. Overall, I like they are doing happy songs. That is part of who they are too - artists who want to bring joy and comfort. I have enough stress and heaviness just with life in general right now so an upbeat song to just dance to is much welcomed!

Thanks for this! Feel the same as you. For me it is frustrating they have to adapt to English in order to be recognized because their next dream is in the power and dominance of the English language. Hopefully their work will allow for other people to be recognized in whatever language!

I don’t think BTS are loosing themselves with there English songs. I think BTS are just finally comfortable enough to try new things with out caring if ppl like it or not. Recently in the BTSXAmazon interview namjoon said the people can use songs like dynamite, butter and permission to dance as a gateway to getting into BTS and from there they can start to go back and look at their older songs from 2013. They also said that they have come to a point in there career where they don’t feel as much pressures anymore so they are free to try and experiment with different genres because not matter what they release army will enjoy and stream and chart 😌👆🏾 as they should

i don’t think they’re losing themselves, it’s just 3 eng songs out of their 200+ korean discography. no one ever made a big deal of their japanese works so i don’t understand why people are so quick to get on them for english.
sure, the song might not be for everyone and people might prefer their older songs but they’ve grown so much since then. they can’t shine as artists if their sound stays stagnant

They don't need permission to do whatever they want to do. This goes right along with Idol. People telling them they "should" do this or they "shouldn't" do that. And BTS responded loudly that they were going to do them - however they wanted to do them. Only they can define themselves.

I think they did this song in english because they want to share the message of the song to the world by the english language and also the happy vibe and the purple balloons were refering to the end of Covid-19! 💜 and if you want to listen to the rap line you can check out "outro:tear":)
If the goal is to make a light, happy, dancy, song that helps heal people, then that song reaching and being understood by as many ears as possible is important. I think that context matters when judging them putting out more commercially friendly music. They wrote and released BE between Dynamite and Butter, so there is no part of me that questions their commitment to continuing to create "deep", "meaningful", music in Korean... even if people are sleeping on MotS:7 and BE like they just don't exist and all BTS has put out in the last 2 years are these 3 English tracks.
BTW... I wonder why it is that people fear BTS losing their identity over English tracks, but not Japanese... they both occur for the same reasons... Artist choice and Market.

also i think even if the lyrics aren't as deep as their top songs in Korean (my fav is ON, and I think in a recent video BTS said that song is underrated, which I agree), the context in which they're releasing this song is intentional, and gives a joyful energy while the world is coming out of a difficult time - I think this is on par for BTS in the best way

I guess I meant that for me, the music hits different with several of their Korean lyric songs, which I think is at least partly because they’re singing/rapping in their first language, and having had a greater hand in writing the songs. Part of what makes BTS’ music so amazing is the variety, from joy to more difficult feelings to empowering and uplifting, and I have really appreciated different songs even more at different times of my life.
Because Japan as a country genuinely appreciates them as artists and respects all the put out and give them a lot of exposure, as deserved. The western industries on the other hand have treated them pretty abysmally. Secondly,the Japanese songs all have beautiful and unique melodies that still feel very much like BTS with very little autotune. Whereas the English tracks definitely lack depth and feel watered down. Simple as that.
The only time BTS would"lose themselves" is if they fell to the pressure to not do what THEY want to do and base what they do on other people's opinions. If they want to do English - it's up to THEM. If they want a song with just vocals - it's up to THEM. If they want a song with just rap - it's up to THEM. They've had enough of people telling them what they "should or shouldn't" be doing. If they choose to do certain songs - then that is who they are. They are not defined by their songs, their songs are defined by them.

I simply don’t understand why pple keeps complaining whenever they sang in English. As far as I understand, it seems like this song is a special present from BTS to their fans on ARMY’s day and it was even shown in the MV fm start till end, every nook n corner in the MV represent ARMY. I took it that they decided to present an English song to their fans considering they hv fans from all over the world n pick English as the median language for all their fans around the world and I’m sure they are going to produce a Korean album at the right time. So chill pls and just appreciate the effort they are trying to please their fans all over the world.

jimin is so intimidating when he's dancing ,, even if it's a fun song. i'd be terrified if i had to dance in the same stage as someone that passionate so i understand why some ppl feel so threatened by him

Ed Sheran wrote the song for them and in the choreography has sign language in it as well. The very end of the video has the camera crew and staff taking part in the dance. Which is soooo cool to see.
This song is a gift to ARMY rather than a grade. You have to interpret their gift properly.

I agree with you, ‘Don’t loose yourself chasing the Grammy.’ However these are just singles not a full album. As for the Grammy, they had submitted multiple songs from their album but the academy only chose Dynamite so that was out of their control (I shall control my rage towards that whole fiasco).Dynamite was released as a single and added to BE. So far they are treating Butter and PTD as singles as well so let’s try not to put BTS in a box just yet. About the rap line not rapping.... I think they have reached a place and level in their career where they can just make a song without the need to rap. Like when the vocal line performed Daeng during their concerts or more recently did Deachwita during Sowoozoo concert. It’s ok to have fun sometimes when one reaches the position they have achieved.
The rap line has been saying over a year how they want to try different stuff, like Yoongi is taking vocal lessons and hobi recently said he wanted to try ballad and singing

BTS came this far by breaking all the standards set in K-Pop, by breaking the glass ceiling set by the people, by crossing the boundaries set by music industry. They know what they’re doing. They know what they want. They know what ARMYs want. They are not trying to “become” anybody else cuz they know exactly who they are and we love them exactly for that 💜

5:44 to 6:44 -- my sentiments exactly. I was so glad that during their last live together, they said they needed a break to get back to their roots, so to speak. Their originality and where they came up from is what makes them genuine and authentic, and the reason that drew in so many fans from around the world. When they return, I want our BTS back, not a Hollywood commercialised group. As BTS and a lot of fans know and say, these men have nothing to prove to anyone. Their hard work, dedication, and individuality is what draws us to them.

I think BTS is mature enough to keep themselves as they are, they were doing their thing from the beginning, I think this 2 songs are very clear goals, BUTTER the summer song and of course the Grammy we know that and this one in my opinion is a cheer up song to army and any people easy to learn and using the English as universal language... They have said they working in an album as group and as solo (like V who is preparing his mixtape, finally 😅) and I'm sure it will be in Korean as usual, is not one of my favorite song but is a good one ☺
Tbh my honest opinion is that when I first heard it I was like meh.. it kinda gives me high school musical vibes because compared to their other english bangers like Dynamite and butter, it doesn’t give that feel idk but will always support them, it’s just that this is more of a radio song. (The rap line makes bts songs stand out from other artists)

I agree I don’t want them to lose themselves trying to chase after a Grammy and what not, but I also think they should do whatever they want to do if it makes THEM happy and it’s very obvious how happy they are and how much of a good place they are in doing these songs as well. Definitely trusting them is key - so I don’t think they’ll lose themselves whatsoever. I think it’s just something else they’re giving a go and it’s working for them! I love it😊

I agree as well. I don't want them to lose themselves. However, by doing more songs in English, they're showing the world that language isn't a barrier. You can't ignore them now that they've stepped into another realm.

By releasing these songs it helps people find out about them and to dive more into their discography! This army gets it, they show the portholes from Spring Day with life instead of death, they incorporate sign language into the choreography throughout, they include everyone in the celebration of the end stages of COVID with a Birthday Party. It’s OK to be happy again even if we did just experience a horrible loss and tough times! I have never been more proud of these amazing men. English is the best language to talk to the world.
Yeah i also thought the same..like this song is also an english song and that they should Not loose themselves for english... But I also thought that english is an international language those who have language barriers can overcome those barrier through English...so that's why it's in english because they want to spread happiness into the whole world without any language conflict...and meanwhile BTS is not just a K-pop group anymore it's a worldwide group

They've mentioned that these cheerful English songs are for uplifting people during this depressing pandemic. My opinion is I've never been disappointed in a BTS song, and I'm left smiling, uplifted, and dancing when I listen to Permission to Dance. I'm a fan no matter what they try and don't want to put them in a box. They have so many sounds and moods, and I love them all. Whether they try something new or repeat something they've already tried, I have no doubt that it will be special in its own way and will be added to my playlist. This is such a happy and hopeful song that makes me feel good and improves my mood and reminds us we are al the same and have so many aspects of our lives in common. Some armies need to chill, I’ve been an Army since 2015 when I studied abroad in Korea and fell in love with BTS and their unique sound. Do I love the boys any less recently? No. Am I allowed to dislike some of the more bubblegum Western pop style songs they have been releasing recently? Yes. Everyone has their music preference and it doesn’t make you a hater to say your opinion. Also we all know the boys want a Grammy and we all know they will never win with a Korean song (sadly because Black Swan deserved it so much) which is why their record label is definitely happy with them to go down this route. Nobody said the boys were forced into anything but if you knew anything about what goes on behind the scenes in the music industry at the end of the day it’s a business and the labels goal is to make money and if BTS songs in English like dynamite get more airplay that means more money for then and more listeners and more buyers. I miss the rap line the way they shined on the earlier tracks and wish they could do something more hip hop or dare I say a concept like blood sweat and tears and show the US they aren’t just a typical boyband but the Asian version if you know what I mean. I don’t know about other Armies who don’t like this song but for me it’s not the language it’s just the general shift in musical style and the excessive auto tune and production. I’m a big fan of English songs by Kpop idols when they match what I like to listen to for example Monsta X Who Do U Luv plus Secrets from their latest album. The point of my comment is I wish Armies would just accept that you can be an Army and dislike some songs or a certain sound, you don’t have to like every song of an artist to be a fan of them if you do then great but if not that’s ok wait til the next comeback. 👌
I do want to add that I quite liked Butter though compared to Dynamite and especially compared to PTD but their Korean songs are still better than them all

When this music video started, my reaction to it was similar to yours, that again a whole english single, I was also afraid that they might lose themselves trying to focus on the awards and stuff. But later on when the video proceeded, I saw them doing that dance step in sign language and the rapline enjoying themselves being vocalists (specially if you see that part by yoongi, it is mindblowing). I understood that at this stage they are not trying to get anyone's recognition, they jut put out this song in order to portray the thought "Do whatever you like, whatever makes you happy, you do not have to be perfect at everything". And I personally feel this is what the whole deal with pandemic taught us, that sometimes in life you just have to keep going, not to stop, you don't have to be the ace at every step but just walk through all of it with courage. Just as they said "Coz if we fall we know how to stand". They wanted to give out a positive happy message by being their true selves, so we should too happily accept the change that makes them happy. :)

This song is for giving comfort and positivity to people suffering in this pandemic. It's full of hope. Language doesn't matter bcz music transcends language barrier. They can make songs however they feel. They are not losing but discovering themselves. And we ARMYs will always support them even if they sing in wakanda language . Have a happy day 🤗
I think now bts live in their happy era and since we are in a pandemic they want to bring more happy vibes specially that this song released on army day I think they wanted to tell us that this phase in soon over and we can be happy and dance together again 💜
I think its just that they want to give the message of positivity out there in the world where everyone is frustrated in English. And that's totally up to them. They have many songs in Korean and they will be creating music in future too. It's just they are trying different genre and most importantly their love for music has not change their passion for music has not changed. SO I don't think they are loosing themselves.
This song was written cuz of the pandemic so i think it was supposed to be more touching.. thats why there is no rap in it. They wanted to motivate people to keep fighting. They even included kids, who have a lot of restrictions nowadays because of the virus and are going through a hard time. I LOVE THIS SONG

Because the japanese songs genuinely are super melodious,unique and beautiful. Especially Your Eyes Tell and Film Out. They still feel on brand for BTS. This just feels generic and watered down to me?its a cute bside but won't be memorable for me.

Whereas this feels so generic..and one thing I never associate with the rest of BTS discog is that word. So it's just disappointing. But anyway,I'm not too upset as its still a cute gift for ARMY, I just know this song is not really for me. And thats okay.

Just the fact that they're korean men competing in a xenophobic industry it's representative enough. Bts is free to do whatever they want, and it includes sing in english. Since english is considerated the "global language" , sing in english means reach more people, sharing hope and confort in such difficult times. The boys are very clear about what is their goal: make people more happy. They'll never lose themselves. Don't matter in what language they're singing, either korea, english or japanese, they keep reaching their goal. Language does not differ BTS music. BTS's music is BTS's music. Btw, the guys just released a korean album a few months ago. They only have 3 english songs, they did not stop to make music in korean.
It's not about the language. Its about the Grammy's, that my only thing, I don't want them getting caught up in that non sense. I'm here reacting to multiple language... So language isn't a problem

Reminder : BTS is a global artists the sing in multiple languages but focus on Korean which is their native one , they release these english tracks during the pandamic with a message of hope to everyone in the world and yes they are not deep as their other songs because it is not their native languages and other people wrote it for them and the whole aim is to spread positivty

Salam Musa... firstly this song is kind of 'celebrating' Army's birthday, 9th June and what a happy, fun and wholesome song it is. The fandom is very international worldwide, English song is just perfect. Secondly the melody is so catchy that it will certainly boost BTS's existence to non Korean audience, which is a good strategy to lure more interest towards them... and thirdly I am almost certain BTS will keep making Korean song without a doubt, the boys are very sensible lot. In the face of this pandemic, they are making this song to cheer us on and to keep our spirit high... and that is just so awesome !!........Love this boys💜

150% Agree. An Army Mom ( 54 yrs old from the Caribbean).. been with our boys since 2016 and when I first heard the song - was ambivalent. That being said: it was written by Ed Sherran and is the perfect msg given our times. Not only giving a strong msg I feel hope...but a happier version of Life Goes On with the folks tearing off their masks. It is also the first vid to ever feature ordinary folks of different races and ages. This was clear that the Army has grown into this massive body that reaches across the world. Am not sure but..when they drop their album in August - I believe it is going to be entirely in English? Btw Sir...I remember CLEARLY on one of your reactions, you said " MAIN STREAM AMERICAN ARTISTS BETTER PRAY THAT BTS NEVER DOES AN ENGLISH SONG OR ALBUM 'COS THEY WILL RULE THE WORLD!!". Well..... maybe they heard you 😝 So hush it, young man and becareful what you wish for 🤣😂. I'm loving the cowboy/country style they have going on and I'm also giving props to the stylist noonas for styling them this way and also props o to the people in the MV as you could see they were clearly havin fun.
I'm loving the beat and the line " I don't need permission to dance" will be stuck in my head for ever and always now, also it's such and iconic line and is up there with " Get it, Let it roll".
I'm also loving the beat of the music as it'd so happy and upbeat and really summery, it also makes me wanna smile just seeing them have fun.
The choreo is so groovy and makes me wanna dance and I just wanna groove with it also as there isn't really that much choreo it's really easy to dance too.
I love their MV as it shows the boys having fun with eachother and other people also the vocals are as amazing as ever, I especially love yoongis vocals as he really can sing, and it makes me wanna sing along.
It all being English aswell also makes it their 3rd all English song and this one is just as catch as Dynamite and Butter.
Also I love the message behind the song ad it basically says no matter what or where you are if you here music you love just dance along to it as you don't need permission to dance and have fun.
Us armys are getting so spoilt on our birthday and o just love the guys so much and you can clearly see how much they love us back k by just seeing how hard they work and how they care about us.
You'll never get another band like BTS who love their fans so much and who works so hard for them.

I must say, I agree 100% with all you said. I love BTS and this song is a catchy summer tune for sure, same as butter. But like you I miss the rap line as they tend to be my favourite parts in any song, even though them singing took me by surprise! They are trying out something different so I am curious to see where they will decide to go from there with their music. Let's wait and see!

Dynamite and permission to dance were both songs given to BTS non of the members had a part in making or writing those 2 songs. I think it was great to let the rappers show case their vocal talent. This song is on the album butter but it’s just these 2 songs. I think the lyrics are very much what BTS stands for and they used sign language in the video. When I think of BTS I think of inclusivity and that is what this video brings. People heal when they listen to BTS music that has been the case since day 1 and that’s what this song does so I really don’t think BTS is loosing themselves

I almost think this is the end of the "get Army through the pandemic" series. They dropped Dynamite to make Army smile when things were so unsure last year, they dropped Butter which had the same vibe, and then this with all of the hopeful themes like the masks coming off and the office scene having a "welcome back" sign. Honestly I don't mind them releasing some fun ones. I like seeing artists experiment. I wonder if this is them starting to prep themselves for possibly touring again once all of this is over. Ease themselves back in with choreography that isn't going to kill them right off of the bat.

BTS are just aiming towards a different market a.k.a the U.S market, its the exact same way how every single idol releases full length Japanese albums or english versions of Korean songs. It's to appeal and expand to a different market. Dynamite TRIPLED BTS's fanbase, and people who would never give a Korean song a chance, listened to Dynamite, realized that BTS is actually worth the hype, and proceeded to check out their Korean music. BTS have been releasing Korean & Japanese music for over 7 years, I think it's perfectly fine for them to change things up. It doesn't make them a sellout, because Kpop is originally created to appeal to western audiences anyway, the Korean general public doesn't even look at Kpop as real music. Kpop has always been a western export, so whats wrong with dropping an English, Japanese or Chinese song? Blackpink's album was like 70-80% English but no one batted an eye, because they are a global group, not just a Korean group focusing on Korea. If that was the case, no Kpop song would have a lick of English in it, or even have English titles and groups wouldn't have English names and companies wouldn't need an English speaker or Korean-American/Canadian/Australian in every group. It's all to appeal to the west. Also Namjoon said he doesn't wanna be cornered into a box which is part of the reason he dropped the name "Rap Monster" Jhope was originally going to be a vocalist but switched positions with V and became a sub-vocalist, and Yoongi recently said he wants to pursue singing more, which is part of the reason why the rapline has been singing a lot lately. Also Ed Sheeran was the main writer of this song so he wouldn't have written rap verses for each member I think.
One quick correction, j-hope was never supposed to be a vocalist, he was always a rapper. He became a rapper 1.5 years before Tae even joined the group.

I like this song even without a rap part, it makes me happy - it fits the positive msg they want to send for a brighter optimistic future in the midst of covid and so dropping an edgy song when the world needs a positive msg did not fit the agenda -- its very inclusive and also incl sign language to incl the hearing impaired as July is disability month. They are just being artists expanding their horizons from their usual sing compositions.
I don’t think they are losing themselves, they are just trying different things based on what they want to do and stuff, cause they don’t have to prove anything to anyone at this point. I agree these English singles are very different from the usual Bts sound but it’s also cause they haven’t worked on these songs personally as usual! So it all makes sense. Also these English songs are like separate projects, when it comes to their full classic comebacks they always go back to their roots and sound (see BE for example !) so yeah we just have to wait for their next album and see
